Possible trade???
I know that we already have a roster full of OF's, but if the Rockies make Matt Holliday available, can we really pass up making a run at him?
From 2005-2007, his stats away from Coors field are the following:
AVG: .281 OBP: .343 SLG: .466 HR: 30 RBI: 126 2B: 54
3B: 7 AB: 854 H: 240 Games Played: 214 BB: 73 K: 168
The closest road splits for that time frame that I noticed was Jimmy Rollins who had more SB and 3B, but less runs scored and a slightly lower AVG and OBP.
I know the production is down from what it has been at home, but you would assume that wherever he calls home he would produce better than on the road.
Who would the Cards need to give up outside of Rasmus, or is the deal not possible without Rasmus?
Holliday's bat would provide protection for Albert that he hasn't seen since Edmonds was in his prime...

Uhh, what makes you think he is available?
Not to mention, if he is available, its cause they couldnt work out a contrac with him and Boras. And so he would be a rental. Pass. We have much bigger holes to spend resources on than an OF.

In Ken Rosenthal's latest post at
Fox Sports, he speculates on Holliday, Atkins, and Fuentes could be moved soon. And he even mentions the Cardinals as possible suitors.
Would I love to see it happen? Yes. Is it likely to happen. No.

Not a Good Thing
That a corner OF guy’s closest comp is a short stop. I’m sure it’s not, but I wouldn’t want to give up what it would take to get Holliday. Nor Atkins or Fuentes, for that matter.

We don't need another outfielder
we need to trade some of the ones we have
by azruavatar on May 15, 2008 8:37 PM EDT 0 recs
no
but Brian Fuentes wouldn’t be a bad guy to be had. I wonder if we could get him for one our excess outfielders (especially if the Rockies consider trading Holliday to another team).
I agree, though. Holliday will be too big of a price for a position we don’t need.

much less than Holliday
Despite Corpas’ awful start this year, I’m sure they’d like him to be the closer once Fuentes hits the FA market. I have no idea what the Rockies are looking for, so I’m not going to spit out some random package, but I can say that it’ll take much less than what it’ll take to get Holliday and Fuentes is exactly the type of guy we need this season.

This trade idea
Is a pipe dream. Not calling you out, Jumsy, more of calling out Rosenthal. I agree with azru…we need relief pitching and middle infield help, if we’re looking at the short-term.

I enjoyed reading
the discussion anyway… but Holliday would cost too much, and he doesn’t plug a key need.
But I think he’s a terrific player,

I’ve been struggling with this for a while. With all the money available next year who are the Cardinals going to spend it on? They need somebody like Holliday to protect Pujols otherwise Pujols is going to want out of St. Louis sooner than later. If there is a chance at getting a guy of Hollidays caliber, outside of Rasmus, you have to take it. He’s young and a MVP candidate every year. You just don’t pass that up. Now the bigger question is who do the Cardinals package for him. He’s essentially a half year rental.
Life is short! Break the rules! And never regret anything that made you smile.

an MVP candidate every year, as long as he plays at coors
take him away from coors and he is a career .274/.336/.444 player. Basically, Juan Encarnacion.
He’d be a little better than that as the coors-hangover effect,/a> wouldn’t be as prevalent, but for what he’d cost it just isn’t worth thinking about, unless the goal is to sell “holliday” jerseys.

Really?
I still think the major needs are at SS, 2B, and a top flight starter. I’d much rather make a FA run at someone like CC Sabathia than for someone like Holliday.
There are no bats in the majors that could protect Pujols—there’s very little evidence that supports the “protection” of star hitters.

go for it...
I brought this up on a yahoo message board during the col/stl series a couple of weeks ago. package rasmus and parisi and/or perez for holliday. we’ll have the money freed up to pay him long term- like the mets did with santana. holliday is young, proven, and consistent. don’t let him go without a solid try.

Holliday is
One of the best players out there period. He is a total stud and if we could get him he would upgrade our team to freaking awesome status

whats everyones opinion on Atkins?
He has been tied to trade rumors too. He would come cheaper and fill a hole for severial upcoming years. he hits for average and power

plus,
Atkins can play second, meaning we could keep Glaus in the line-up for this year and next. That’d add quite a bit of pop to our team.
I don’t see them getting rid of him at a cheap price, though. I still think the guy to go after is Fuentes.

i remember this too
he may have played one game there this year…causing my head to explode thinking he could get 2b eligibility…but then they went ahead and called someone else up.
I remember there was a rotoworld or yahoo blurb about him maybe getting 2b playing time, but he must not be very good there because it never even came close.
i wonder what his home/away splits are.
also does anyone have a gague on his D?

Atkins is a 3B
here is a link to his batting info when he played a position other than 3B. Only one career game at 2B. Not much action outside of 3B.
His fielding at third looks to be below average if I am reading baseball prospectus public data correctly.

I doubt
They trade Holliday or Atkins anywhere. Those guys were part of a core that got them to the World Series. Holliday was damn near MVP for cryingoutloud. If they did, it’s because they couldn’t figure out what to do with his contract, which runs through next year. If that’s the case, then he’ll be asking a truckload, and considering he’s not /THAT/ young (28) and the haul it will take to get him (like Rasmus, Anderson, etc.) I don’t think this is the right guy to dump a ton of resources on. His numbers away from Coors aren’t too exciting.
Fuentes may be expendable, so they may be able to get him for a decent price. He fills a lot of roles in a pen (closer, set-up, whatever) and is a pretty effective guy. If they could get him then I’d be on board with that, provided they didn’t do anything crazy.

i think the reason they would let Holiday go is...
because of money, them being cheap, years (appearently they dont want to go over 4-5 years), and Boras…
then it was said if they resigned Holiday they might have to let Atkins go.
I can see them acting like they would trade Holiday to play hardball but I dont understand the part about letting Atkins go (unless they are playing that against Matt too, if you ask for too much we cant put a good team around you?).

some ESPN speculating on Atkins
http://www.fantasybaseballcafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=345517
Down the road, one possible move that might make some sense (and to be clear, this is pure speculation): If Colorado eventually turns the page on 2008, the Indians and the Rockies could match up well in a deal built around Garrett Atkins. The Rockies have a third baseman waiting in the wings, in Ian Stewart - although he is not faring well so far - and the Indians, as they look for ways to improve their offense, are flexible at first and third base.
