yeah, our 2-7 suddenly don't look so bad...
what with pujols, ank, glaus and molina all seemingly heating up, and kennedy staying hopefully staying hot.

Hope last few games were sign of things to come.

The sad thing about McClouth is that the Pirates
seem more than content on actually keeping the guy instead of turning his hot start into very good prospects. Their minor league system is awful and they need a full fledged rebuilding but won’t part with McClouth.

Homerun/Strikeout Ratio
Can someone with a subscription to baseball-reference do a search to find out how many hitters have a ratio greater than 1? Pujols came oh-so-close in 2006 (49HR, 51K).
I know Ted Williams did it four times, Johnny Mize once… (via fangraphs)

this is the new paradigm
teams are starting to do this more and more now. gives the team financial stability with a core player and gives the player, who at that point is still young and making relative peanuts (relative to veterans, not to us) enough guaranteed money to live on comfortably for the rest of his life. win-win.

From Bernie:
Here’s one from a Cubs’ fan’s blog Out of Right Field: “Signing Jim Edmonds would be like, when Saddam Hussein was overthrown in Iraq, and the U.S. signing the new free agent Hussein to run a cabinet position in the White House. Cubs fans hate Jim Edmonds so much, I AM COMPARING HIM TO SADDAM HUSSEIN, A RUTHLESS DICTATOR.”

Edmonds and Crazy Z have history....
And Zambrano was not apparently happy with his new teammate. (All kinds of “no comments” when questioned by the media about Jimmy.) Perhaps Z will go crazy – again – and try and slug a teammate, this time, Edmonds. Jimmy would duck, Z would miss, hitting a brick wall, breaking his hand in several places. It could happen!
