Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals, May 14, 2008 8:15 PM EDT

Maholm Wellemeyer
2-3, 4.79 3-1, 3.56

pirates try to reach .500 tonight; they haven't been at .500 this deep into a season since 2005, when they played .500 ball through game #60. they ended up at 67-95, in last place. the year before that they were at .500 through 46 games, 23-23 --- but still last in the nl central. they were tied with the cards, brewers, and cubs in the loss column at the time . . . . . went on to finish 5th that year, at 72-89.

Let's hope all three of them have a nice healthy competition

to lead the team in homers. I think any one of them is capable of doing it. Pujols weakness would be getting walked a lot and not enough pitches to hit. Luddy playing time, and Rick being streaky. should be a cool thing to watch

he tried...

it’s on the ESPN.com homepage, first video in the stupid auto-start soundbar. I even turned up the volume for the first time in two years to hear what the announcers were saying.

The slow-mo zoomed in shot looked like Manny tried to high five, but totally missed. Basically just like a routine fly ball.

fastball velocity

Welly’s only hitting 89-90 on the stadium gun… what’s the FSN gun say?

by DarkHelmut on May 14, 2008 9:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

about the same

but that’s what he’s been at all year. The philosophy of sacrificing velocity for movement seems to be working for him.

Wheels are fallin' off

for Lilly. With two outs, a bases loaded single, WP to score another run. Inning over, but the lead’s shaved to one. Bear down, Peavy!

And I gotta say, I’ve been using the 2007 gameday until checking that game. Didn’t realize that the new version even has a pitch classifier in it. Super nice!

I actually logged on to comment about that juicy "Hraboskyism"

I believe the quote was, “everyone is concerned about pitch counts to try and protect the pitchers, but they all get hurt anyway.” (if that’s not the quote, its pretty damned close. What fucking nonsense. These statements are similarly nonsensical:

“everyone’s all concerned about gun control, but people get killed anyway.”

“everyone advocates wearing seatbelts (not driving drunk, etc.) but people die in car crashes all the time.”

“everyone wants good color commentators, but Joe Morgan is still employed.” (Ok, so I went over the top on that one)

what do you think?

last night people said it was a bad idea… I think the problem is that TLR will leave him in even if he’s ineffective in the 7th.
