What a difference in approach

When we bring a rookie up, TLR & Dunc usually wait for a not too crucial situation to use them the first time.
Here the Pirates bring a guy up and his first MLB appearance is in a crucial situation. Talk about a tough first appearance.

I agree with you

especially considering this kid is making his first MLB appearance. I figured he had a chance of throwing a wild pitch.

Still I can’t blame Ludwick for swinging at a good pitch.

by enoscountry on May 13, 2008 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Regardless

no matter how intentional or unintentional – the guy walked the bases loaded. Why not see what he’s got in this situation? I know some people like to harp on guys swinging away on the first pitch – not really a pet peeve of mine, by the way – but in this case I feel it would be somewhat justified.

A guy has walked 2 of 5 batter unintentionally, bases loaded and he first pitch swings and makes an easy out. How many times have we seen that this year? What happens to these guys patience in these situations, they seem to get more hyped up than the alrady sweating pitcher.

Where was the pitch he hit?

My son watching says it was ankle-high and inside, shouldn’t have been hittable.

yeah, it was a bit of a pitcher's pitch

runners left on and a struggling bullpen. That’s the story of the last couple weeks.

not sure why he's not in

i blame this on ludwick….come on villone

by VolsnCards5 on May 13, 2008 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude this one is not on Ludwick

Sure he came up small in the 9th, on the first pitch, but he’s reached base 2 out of 5 times. There’s plenty of other people you can be mad at right now, like how about TLR for bringing Lohse back out for the 7th? Or whoever made the decision to position Skip in Illinois on that one double?

There's still a bottom of the 10th

I know our win expectancy is probably like .3% but stranger things have happened. Any way we can get Denny Graves to pitch the bottom of the 10th?

Well it's quickly getting to the point

where the Cards will be sellers at the deadline…maybe we can get a few pieces for next season for Lohse, Reyes, and maybe even Ludwick and a few others.

my favorite douglas adams bit:

“Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like … ow … ound … round … ground! That’s it! That’s a good name – ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?”

I'm done.

Maybe tomorrow Ludwick won’t swing at a first pitch slider against a guy struggling to throw strikes. And maybe the bullpen can manage to get someone (anyone) out. And maybe the Cardinals will win a close game. But none of that is too likely.

How do you watch a guy struggle to throw strikes and then swing at a first pitch pitchers pitch.

by ICbirdfan on May 14, 2008 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you have to swing at the first pitch sometimes...

that was not the time. Sigh.

Of course, if he had gotten a hit, none of us would be complaining, and he is batting .583 when first pitch swinging.

same leaving men on base.

Sure could use some young arms in that bullpen.

This team is pretty much toast

no clutch hitting + arguably the worst bullpen in baseball = not a good recipe for success.
