M Young to Cards?

Didn't see this posted, but it was on 175 The Wilson show? They were talking baout the Cards and Strauss predicted a fall to earth because of all the cards good stats in OBP, Era, etc they are like 8th in runs scored. He said it has been mentioned to get a bat which we all know, but is hard cause most bats don't come available until late next month. The host asked who and he said maybe Young from Texas which he called doubtful.

I lived East of Dalls for a few yrs and watched this guy come up he moved around their infield and you never heard any gripe of him changing positions etc, plus IMO won the allstar game a few times for the AL. He does nto get alot of press cause he plays for the rangers...I doubt they would do it cause of Kennedy, but would love to see it

Eh

Mixed feelings. He’s a hell of an upgrade from Iz2 offensively, but he’s widely considered brutal with the glove.

Another thing: he’s a big name, and he’d cost pretty good prospects.

I say nay. Especially because his bat isn’t what it was in 2005.

they refered to him as a

” run producer” heres his line… http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6613 agreed it would take a good package to get him

I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

I'd love him.

But it’s unlikely.

he's a 31 year old third baseman playing shortstop

who has hit for a career ~.800 OPS in an extreme pitchers park, and he makes $16M/year through his age-36 season. Yikes.

And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...

So

what would his OPS be in Busch III? (Or did you mean that Rangers’ park is an extreme hitters park?)

uh, yeah

extreme hitters park, sorry.

hed be an upgrade

but they didnt mention his contract…besides strauss said it’s unlikely but thought it was worth the mention cause hadn’t heard the rumor

do you mean 2B?

He was originally at 2B, but I don’t recall him ever playing third.

Also, don’t forget that we have Kozma. He’d be much more of a fix for the next couple of seasons than a longterm solution. He’d give us time to trade for and develop some young talent.

But I agree, the Rangers would need to eat some of the contract.

Kozma

Koz is still in A ball so I’m not sure how he becomes “a fix for the next couple of seasons”. Granted, he’s ripping it up in A ball this year but I’d be shocked if he made it to St. Louis before 2011 season. Also, Koz could be more than a ST fix. He could be the long-term solution.

Short term is the problem. There don’t appear to be any options out there other than Brendan Ryan. Unless converting Skip Schumaker back to a SS is considered an option. Too bad he was not left at SS in the minors.

Yeah, I meant Young

Sorry about that. I figured it’d be assumed.

Going with that . . .
Koz could be more than a ST fix. He could be the long-term solution.
. . . was basically my point. We’d only take Young for the next 3 years or so. He’d be a big improvement over any of the free agents, and would give us time to develop Kozma or trade for other prospects. Plus, if we can get Texas to take on some of Young’s contract, we’re set.

Sorry again about the typo!

Well, what I mean

is that he is a SS in name only, like I could be a SS if I went and stood between second and third with a glove on. he’s not a good defensive SS and will need to be moved to 3B very soon, and his bat is not good enough to be a third baseman. If he could be moved to 2B, he might have value for a year or two, but the contract makes him very unattractive long-term.

And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...

yes i believe he was at second and got moved when soriano came over

then stayed cause they have whats his name now..at 2nd..

Kinsler

That’s exactly my point. He’d make a very comfortable switch to second if need be. I don’t see where Sleepy’s getting this “need to be moved to 3rd” argument.

that's good news

i didn’t realize he was a competent second baseman. That makes a big difference, if true.

Still, $16M for a probable best-case .750 OPS out of a second baseman sure makes you miss ol’ Grudzy, and makes you wonder how we missed the boat on Tadahito Iguchi. And i gotta think- how bad would skip be, at second, exactly?

Take a look at his contract,

then his age, and it won’t seem like a great idea anymore.

Young to the Cards...

is a dreadful idea:

  • 31 years old
  • One of the worst defensive shortstops in baseball
  • Signed through his age 36 season for $16 million per
  • Evidence of declining power already

Signing Pineiro is one thing, but this would be a completely different level of foolishness…

+1

I wouldn’t take on his contract for free at this point.

by mikedallas45 on May 13, 2008 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

okay

guayzimi’s point makes sense, but not taking on his contract for free is just ridiculous. This guy is a consistent .300+ hitter, has over 90 RBI the past four seasons, has had over 200 hits the past five and has played over 150 games the past six. If we move him to second base, we have one of the top second basemen in the big leagues and a huge addition to our offense.

Hmm

Young is a good player, but I see several issues with this, many of which have been stated already:

1. He’s a MIF on the wrong side of 30. I think he could slide over to 2nd and be fine, but I’m worried that his offense is slipping, which ties nicely into my next point
2. His SLG has dropped precipitously since 2005, and his OBP is definitely tied to his batting average, meaning that if he stops hitting he’ll lose a TON of value. Then he’s starting to drift into Adam Kennedy in his ahem, prime. This also ties into my next point.
3. He’s got a shitty contract. He’s paid through the age of 36, and there’s no guarantee he’ll even be able to play that long. He’ll be owed give-or-take 56 million buckaroos if the Cards tack him on late in the season, so he won’t be a rental. He’ll be a member of the Cardinals as long as they want him.

BTW I don’t know how to make one of those fancy, nice looking lists. I used to just jump over to bleedcubbieblue and stomach the wretchedness of Cubdom (Cub-dumb?) to look at their posting tips tab, but they don’t have it on the new platform. So how do you do that?

Try this:

Turn () to <> and,

(list)
(li)first item
(li)second item
(/list)

becomes

  • first item
  • second item
  • They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...

by Valatan on May 13, 2008 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

    you can also

    just do asterisk-space-words. IE

    ’ * first item
    ’ * second item

    becomes:

    • first item
    • second item

i think there’s a way to do 1. 2. etc, but I can’t remember how. Seems to happen accidentally sometimes.

And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...

Tag for that should be (ol) instead of list

    If it works,

    1. this
    2. will
    3. be
    4. a
    5. numbered
    6. list
