Game 40 Open Thread: May 12 2008

St. Louis @ Milwaukee

Wainwright Bush
3-1, 2.25 0-4, 6.98

cards have only lost one series all year long --- to the giants, at home (ouch). they've won 7 series, split 4.

yadi's batting 2d today --- first time he's ever started a game in any of the top 3 positions in the order. in today's main thread somebody suggested that yadi might be the slowest #2 hitter ever; on a whim, i looked up ken reitz's page at B-R to see if he ever started a game in the 2 hole. sure enough, he did --- one time, in this july 1974 game. i reckon ol' reitzie was probably faster than yadi, though . . . . .

Let's go Cards

Win for the split, but more importantly, win for Wainwright. The offense/bullpen has really been letting him down lately. He should easily be a 5 or even 6 game winner by now with the way he’s been pitching.

we really, really need a game like that.

Also so that AW isn’t asked to throw 8+ innings.

Just thinking..

Missed the entire day yesterday due to some work and lots of driving, but read the game threads, wow.

But then I got to think a minute. When the season first began I thought that we would be sitting just under .500 around now and hoping the Pirates come to town so we could have a chance to not be the worst in the central (which can be like being the Ugliest Volvo. I mean, come on).

But we’re not. We’re a cluster of games above .500 and in first, if only barely. We have been getting production from a group of outfielders that frankly, was hard to see. I mean, we have the “oldest..youngest” outfield in the game, and all in all they’re providing us with some reasonable production across the board.

We have a staff that almost every media considers duct taped together. But those bullpen boys are really stepping it up as starters. Frankly, if you look at the actual money on the 25 man roster, I can’t help to be impressed.

Our pair of SS’s aren’t making me miss the older version of ‘Scrappy Doo’ all that much as they can actually field the ball. And while our third baseman has been boring as of late to say the least with the bat, his performance on the field isn’t making me miss the old 3rd baseman dramas that we’ve had the past few years.

And we’re not stuck. We have some depth in the pen and even some doses in starters should we need it. We don’t have to scrape for a pitcher this year, we may even have a few to get rid of. We have some talent building down there that’s making me pay attention to Memphis more and more.

We have some trade chips, even though they may be mediocre at best, and we’re not at our ceiling as a club at all.

So for one day at least, I don’t care about October, the ‘streak’, the missing thunder, the iffy bullpen and the headcase closer. I’m not stressed about the series, the road trip, or how on fire Pit is coming to see us tomorrow (though I’ll note how hot Houston was.. and how well we cooled them off).

I’m just going to sit back and enjoy some baseball, watch our boys play and thank goodness that we’re not the Padres

I use statistics much as a drunken man uses lamp-posts – as support rather than illumination. - Andrew Lang

Wolf won't matter

the Cubs are outscoring their opponents in the 8th inning 476 to 12, or so it seems. Seems like every game at Wrigley, they either take the lead in the 8th inning or tack on 5 insurance runs in the 8th.

Is Bush a sidearmer?

Watching the pitch release on gameday, the release looks very low and wide to the 3rd base side.

after 4 straight balls to luddy

I can’t believe that ump called either of those called strikes on Duncan. One was way high and one was way low; forcing him to swing at a pitchers pitch on 1-2.

I was at the game yesterday

the team seemed really subdued. not to mention the uncharacteristically bad baserunning. Ludwick’s homer was awesome though (albeit almost foul). Looper needed to have the roof open with the sun I think. Suppan looked unstoppable btw
