Can you imagine our prospects for this season

if our bullpen were performing at last year’s level?

We'd have what?

8 losses? If that

Of course, that would also mean

the STARTING pitching was performing at 2007 levels. I don’t even want to think about that.

bullpen didn't really implode;

run expectancy when Piniero came out was 1.65, and we gave up 2, which is just about right.

Could have been a whole lot worse! Frigging diamondbacks bullpen was supposed to be the best in the league.

This offense

f’n sucks. Every freaking game is the same 10-20 runners LOB. You can’t win by scoring 3 runs a game with this bullpen.

I can’t see live broadcast, but on Gameday the dot was right on top of one called a ball.

No...

but the bullpen wouldnt be the focus if the Cards werent scoring 3 runs a game while leaving double digit runners on base a game.

It's fair to say

we wouldn’t be having this double digit LOB rates if it wasn’t for Hal, so can’t take bits and peices and blast the rest

by AdjustedExpectations on May 10, 2008 6:29 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

OK.

Outside of Pujols, whom did you expect (not hope) would be nails offensively on this team? I hoped that Duncan would live up to some of his past. I hoped Ankiel would provide the protection that Edmonds couldn’t any longer. I hoped that Glaus would provide more than Rolen has the last few year.

I wouldn’t say you could expect any of those things. You don’t ask a guy to build an house without inspecting the materials you gave him. This team should have fairly low OPS expectations nearly across the board. Unfortunately, they pulled a bait and switch with the early season success. This isn’t a coaching issue. This is an issue of a team of young, mostly light-hitting offensive players. We all should have known we were in for this.

by etp_stl on May 10, 2008 6:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I don't know

We have a .790 OPS as a team with RISP, which is 4th in the NL. We should be scoring more runs and we aren’t and I just can’t figure out why; I think we are due for a landslide.

And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...

by SleepyCA on May 10, 2008 6:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

What has been the trend on that number?

I haven’t done the homework, so I’m asking. I would venture to believe it has been in decline recently. We seemed to get some exceptional timely hitting and starting pitching that none of us expected. It seems like we are regressing back to the norm. I don’t know that we can reasonably expect guys like Schumaker to maintain his high OPS. We have Miles, Schumaker, Kennedy, Molina, Ryan, and Izturis who are clearly slap hitters. That is a large portion of your batting order on any given night. In addition, Duncan and Glaus really haven’t been providing enough compared to expectations. (Though, Glaus has produced more than his hitting numbers should indicate.)

by etp_stl on May 10, 2008 6:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

yeah, not the time to attack him.

neither does it seem like he is in fact the worst hitting coach around.

by tom s. on May 10, 2008 6:23 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

and if anyone is going to blame hal

isn’t Larry Walker hanging around this week? I think he’s been with the team since the start of the Rockies series. So blaming the hitting staff when it’s the BP doesn’t make sense.

I am the only/last Anthony Reyes fan!

by dangpenguins on May 10, 2008 6:29 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Being patient

doesn’t mean crap when you don’t get the runners in. Walking more is nice and all but doesn’t mean squat if the runners don’t score.

by DKelly28 on May 10, 2008 6:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

So, OBP means nothing?

The popular sentiment (and I’m beginning to come around to it) is that OBP is extremely important. However, this is showing why the S on OPS is so important. You still have to have somebody that can drive in runs. The Cards have Pujols, who is getting pitched around. The Cards have Ludwick, who plays more sparingly than he has earned. The Cards have Duncan, who has shown little run production this year. The Cards have Glaus, who is producing runs despite an horrific BA. They have Ankiel, who is going to be streaky as he is still learning.

This is the issue that caused most of us not to believe in spring. We got blinded by some exceptional pitching early in the season, but it is catching up to us now. A coach can preach patience, but he can’t turn a career .700 OPS guy into a .900 OPS guy. Sorry.

when healthy he was really good last year. And all our pitchers can’t get too old to pitch all at once… can they??

I don't know

but if you ask me I think we need to start injecting some Memphis lovin’ into this pitching staff pretty soon. Pretty sad that we’re going from looking for a clean up hitter or maybe one more starting arm and now the whole bullpen staff is disarray
