Bryan Anderson Promoted
To this point, I have not seen any articles or press releases on the subject, but the Cardinals top catching prospect, Bryan Anderson, was promoted to AAA Memphis on Tuesday April 29. He has gone 0 for 3 with one walk and one strike out so far for the Redbirds, but has only played in one game. Matt Pagnozzi was sent down to AA Springfield to make room on the Memphis Roster. Here is the box score for his first game: http://memphis.redbirds.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=t235&t=g_box&gid=2008_04_29_slcaaa_mrbaaa_1
This move is very interesting to me. I am very intrigued by Anderson's bat, but yet am afraid to lose Yadier's defense. What are your opinions on the situation? Do you believe that Yadier or Anderson should be traded in the near future or possibly even platooned behind the plate? Maybe try Anderson at another position like Craig Biggio was? Either way, Memphis is becoming a propect filled team. It is great to see guys like Rasmus, Anderson, Mather, Freese, etc... march through the system.

How about....
Bringing him up in the next couple of years and letting him learn how to catch and call a game and handle the staff from Yadi. Who learned how to call a game and handle a staff from Matheney. Kind of like the cycle of lfe but only in baseball.

When I think about Yadi and Anderson I think about it in a similar fashion. I kind of look at Yadi like our personal version of Brett Farve. Let’s start, and continue generating solid catching prospects. Allowing them to “grow up in the system”. Then when they earn the spot they can back up Yadi and start learning the game calling/pitcher management aspect of the game.
If Yadi keeps chugging, then we can start using catchers as trade chips with high value. If not, we have one waiting in the wings. If Anderson ends up being in a Hasselbeck like role, until he’s used as a trade chip I’m fine with that, if Yadi wanes I’ll feel a lot better about someone taking over in those circumstances.

Trade bait?
Maybe bryan anderson is being brought up for more visibility to garnish some value as a good trade piece. If we package him with one of our extra bullpen guys or starters (wellemeyer, looper) in july we may be able to get back a some very good pieces (i.e., middle infield starters). However, this goes without saying that he was absolutely mashing AA pitching and he deserved the call up. I don’t see molina going anywhere as he’s good friends with pujols, and if molina was traded our let go as a FA, that would not make the big man happy.

Why not let Anderson back-up Yadi? Can’t do any worse than who we have now?

defensively LaRue has been much better than Bennett. I don’t think Anderson fits at that level either.

If it's going to mess with his development
than it’ll hurt the MLB club quite a bit to have him be the backup, regardless of any marginal improvement over LaRue.

placido polanco was also
albert’s “best friend”, and he was traded… it’s just one data point, but I’m sure Albert understands that it’s a business.
Anyway, i was really surprised to see Anderson start at AA again this year; hopefully they had something specific they wanted him to work on there, before moving him up. It obviously wasn’t plate discipline…

that was a long time ago
pujols was still fairly new on the scene when polanco was traded . . . at the time of the deal (2002) he was still earning his stripes. since then pujols has clearly established himself as one of the premier players in MLB and the face of the franchise; he’s also brought home an MVP trophy and a world series championship. it stands to reason that albert’s influence on the management and front office may be greater now than it was in his second season.

I would assume that Anderson would garner quite a return
in a trade, no?

considering he's only 21
and was absolutely raking at AA…not to mention throwing out would be base stealers at a 45% clip, he would definitely bring something in a trade….but i think we need to hold on to him and let him garner even more trade value….maybe pull the trigger this offseason and get a legit star in return(we would have to package him with someone else though)

I like the idea to just promote him to the bigs
I think if he can show any kind of progress at AAA they should promote him. LaRue is beyond bad and anything would be better than him. The only arguments against are starting his major league clock and not getting him enough at bats. I think he could get enough at bats subbing with Molina and coming off the bench to pinch hit. This would help solve our lack of pop off the bench as well. We would just need someone that can play Catcher in a serious pinch that is on the roster.

Emergency Catcher
In response to your last sentence, I find it almost humorous that the emergency catcher currently is Aaron Miles. Now granted this is only if Yadier and LaRue both get hurt during the same game, but it is a slight possibility. If I remember correctly, John Mabry was the old emergency catcher, although he never had to actually catch within a game. Oh, the good ol’ days…

wasn't it spiezio last year?
I seem to recall he was talked about in that vein…
once Motte gets up here, that’ll probably be his job ;)

I just hope that if Reyes does eventually get traded
Motte is the one they bring up to replace him. I just want to see if he can keep up that K rate in the majors.

Could we move him to 2nd base?
We have a huge hole on this team at 2nd and have had one for quite awhile. Biggio played a very fine 2nd base and I would be happy if we had a great hitting 2nd basemen. Then a subpar hitting SS wouldn’t hurt as bad. I have a feeling this guy is a very good athlete and could probabily play Outfield, 2nd, or of coarse Catcher

Anderson
1. No way should he be brought up to be a back up catcher at this stage. He is only 21 and needs to play everyday right now. Eventually it would be a good idea to have him as a back up but he his still learning to hit and he just jumped up another level. No need to rush the guy to come up and sit on the bench alot. Keep Larue around to sit on the bench. Young guys just need to play.
2. He is not going to change positions. Just because a HOF player was able to play multiple postion’s does not mean every player can play multiple positions. I could see Yadi getting traded in a few years if Anderson progresses well. Just wait and see no need to panic and make Anderson change positions.
Craig Biggio is a hall of fame player and it’s odd that everyone assumes guys can just play multiple positions well like he did.

Agreed...
Any 21-year-old prospect needs at-bats; catchers also need innings behind the plate. Anderson will be the everyday catcher at Memphis… let’s see how well he adapts to AAA.
LaRue is gonna get about seven at-bats a week spelling Yadi—if he throws out a couple of baserunners and handles the pitching staff well, he’s doing his job. Hell, Sno-Cones won a series against the Cubs by having the weekend of his life with the bat!
Is LaRue a good hitter? Probably not, at this stage in his career… but he’s a better fit as a backup catcher than the Cards’ options last season.
Patience… Anderson will reach The Show when he’s ready.

completely agree... patientce is a wonderfull thing
never, never, never trade away your (only real) catching prospect. C is a prime defensive position and there are not that many good catchers. nothing wrong to have a prospect at AAA who is (almost) ready to go when necessary
no need to hurry anu decision. let’s just get Anderson ready and time will show what’s next. remember when Yadi came up? back then it was believed Yadi had yet a year or so to go before being ready for the show… Matheny was not done or gone, but still an injury forced the team to give Yadi a call up.
Imagine the Cardinals winning it all in 2008

Agreed
With Anderson needing to play everyday.
2008 is a rebuilding year remember? I know we are in first place after a month. But this team is still designed to be better in 2009 than 2008. LaRue is the prefect throw away backup catcher. Let’s not trade away or rush our prospects to the bigs for the sake of trying to complete this year. If we are still close by the trade deadline then maybe Mo makes a move. But Im sure that will come from our glut of outfielders or our SPer’s. (um, Reyes or Thompson).

I agree that we can't move him to second base...
but I don’t see Yadi getting traded any time soon, or at least while TLR is manager. Yadi is possibly the best fielding catcher in the NL. Last year, he only had 7 passed balls, and he had 27 CS compared to 23 SB, which is a great percentage. Knowing how hard it is to get a catcher who is good on defense, I think Tony would trade Anderson before Molina.

anderson
granted, this is a big if…but if the cardinals take kyle skipworth in the first round this year…then anderson beomes imminently tradeable…and if we could get a legit major league ss for anderson…then we have to pull the trigger…tyler greene is not gonna make it to the majors, and kozma is at least 3-4 years away…so we need a shortstop for the future…and we have a pretty good catcher locked up for the next few years
so if we take a catcher in the draft that looks like a player(legit prospect)...i say trade anderson for a ss if we can get someone to take the offer

Great post here
I don’t understand the conventional wisdom that Anderson is “blocked” by Molina. Sure, Molina is locked up as the starting catcher for years. However, a backup catcher isn’t “blocked” the way a backup, say, first baseman is. Anderson could easily come to the bigs and start 50 games at catcher and pick up 200+ at bats. Last year, Molina started only 101 games; Stinnett and Bennett had 237 AB’s between them (to Molina’s 353). Even recognizing that Molina did some DL time last year, I fully believe that Anderson would get a lot of exposure as a backup. I also recognize that Molina is relatively fragile and should start no more than 105 or 110 games a year, just to protect his health. If a truly skilled catcher backed him up, a manager could feel a lot better giving him an off day.
Anybody who thinks he’d be “stuck” as a backup catcher needs to remember that a backup catcher doesn’t have to comply with the Bennett/LaRue/Stinnett model, who are offensive and defensive inferiors to Molina. Imagine the role a backup catcher could take if we played him because he would help the team, not just because we had no alternative.
I don’t think it’s realistic to expect that Anderson will convert to a GG 2d baseman, but I do think it’s reasonable to give him the Chris Duncan crash course in shagging fly balls, so that he can get a few more AB’s in the bigs (I don’t know what kind of speed he’s got, but MiLB has him at 200 lbs. and 6’1”—I imagine he could manage a corner OF spot). That would give him the flexibility to play backup catcher/5th OF and a credible pinch hitter.
I recognize, of course, that his best value to the club may ultimately be in a trade. Even his value in getting 250 AB’s for the Cards as a backup may not be as much as what we could get in a trade. I do think that some people talk about him as if he must either be traded or forced to convert to another spot entirely, as if backing up for a time is unreasonable. Forcing him to convert from the most defensively challenging position on the field to become an infielder seems like taking the bed off your dump truck and commuting to work in it. We shouldn’t just assume that backup catchers should hit .200 because that’s what most backups do. If we have a truly talented defensive catcher with real offensive skills who is under club control, that’s a gold mine in baseball.
