Game 29 Overflow Thread
Holy crap it's Mike Lincoln. On ESPN gamecast he still has a Cardinal hat on. Crazy.
Cards up 5-2 in the seventh with men on 1st and 2nd two outs.

How about our schedule so far though- 29 games in april, plus the rainout game, one day off tomorrow, and then 20 straight to start May, with the last 4 games of a road trip against the brewers in Milwuakee. If I was a cynical man I’d say the schedule-makers were trying to challenge us.

3 scenarios
Cubs with a half game lead
or half game behind
or the brewers could be tied with us

So if they win tonight and tomorrow afternoon, we’d be down by a game going into the weekend series.

pitch counts
There was a lot of talk about Wainwright throwing 125 pitches over the weekend. Should we be concerned that Looper stayed out for 114 today? It’s not like Looper is that much more conditioned to be a starter than Wainwright – plus, he only lasted six innings.

More worried about looper short term, WW long term
Looper most liked was pitching more tired than Adam was so in the short term I am more worried about Looper than Adam. But long term wear and tear (end of this season and beyond) I am much more worried about Adam staying healthy and being a good pitcher.
by StLHugo on Apr 30, 2008 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not just numbers
its about how the pitchers looked as they threw >100 pitches. Wainwright, in addition to getting over 110 pitches, looked to be completely out of gas in the 9th and Tony let him stay in there to get the CG – that worries me.
In Looper’s case, I didn’t see the game, so I dunno how he looked. Its not all about conditioning either…the body adapts pretty well to workload once the program is switched. Looper has a full year of starting under his belt, so he’s conditioned to do this…it’s just a matter of him having the stuff to get through a lineup 3x.

Each pitch isn't the same.
The idea is that in general each pitch is worse than the previous one. So 25 pitches isn’t twice as bad as 14 pitches over 100. It’s like 100 trillion times worse (or something like that)
It’s like warp speed on Star Trek. Warp 2 is like twice the speed of light while Warp 6 is like 46,000 times the speed of light. (Est. – My tech manual is not in arms length and it’s not worth opening up another window.)

when did Brian Giles become an umpire?

Sowers
I don’t know alot about Jeremy Sowers as a pitcher but I like why I know about him as a person…......from a good family – smart guy, Vandy grad – insisted on completing degree despite being drafted with huge signing bonus
Has an identical twin brother – Josh – a righthanded pitcher not quite as heralded….....currently a farm hand with Jays….....Josh, another bright guy, is a Yale grad where he was coached by John Stupor…...former Cardinal pitcher and one of the heroes of 82 championship team

Can identical twins
be differently-handed? Jeremy throws left, Josh throws right…
Either they are fraternal (not identical) or I’m an idiot.

Suppan not sharp for the Brewers
So far, .2 IP, 6 ER, 5H, 1BB. Too bad, I was enjoying our boys in a solid first.

Cubs up 6-0
in the first. Supp is digging a pretty big hole for his team to climb out of.

Cubs are tough at Wrigley so far this year
I hope our offense kicks it into high gear when we play them at Wrigley, because they are scoring a ton o’ runs there.

Yeah.
Mulder, 3.2 innings, 9 runs (7earned) 3 home runs. Don’t count on Mulder any time soon. If Mulder makes it back, It’ll probably be several years down the road and a couple ball clubs later.

You do realize that even though it was AAA
he was pitching against the best team in the league, right? They are off to the best start in the 105 year history of the PCL.

But...it...was...AAA
And from what I read, Mulder was looking forward to the challenge because it was a big time lineup.
And he got crushed. Not good…

Suppan
What’s up with the Supp….he never pitched this bad with us, at least not too often. The Cubs are eating him alive tonight. 92 pitches in the 4th…ouch. Is he turning into Matt Morris #2?
by KYCards on Apr 30, 2008 9:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I"m almost certain he's more reliant on the defense behind him than most
And that’s not really the Brew Crew’s strong point.

the Brewers haven't been that bad defensively so far this year
at least according to the traditional metrics – they came into today with 14 errors in 26 games, and only 3 unearned runs allowed all year. then again, they have one error so far tonight, and 3 of supp’s runs were unearned…
could be that the defense behind him doesn’t even have enough range to get a glove on the ball, so that’s why they aren’t getting charged with errors.
but, supp’s K/BB ratio for the season now stands at 12:11, in over 34 innings, so it’s not just the defense … he’s never been a strikeout pitcher but his ratio is usually better than that. (though maybe the defense is a factor – in the past supp could often get away with just throwing strikes and counting on the cards defense to turn a lot of grounders into outs; without that luxury, he has to nibble at the corners and the result is more walks and fewer strikeouts)
OK – time to quit arguing with myself, i’m off to celebrate the fact that THE CARDS HAVE ALLOWED THE FEWEST RUNS OF ANY TEAM IN THE NL SO FAR THIS YEAR

Soto
is going to run away with Rookie of the year…and if Lee stays healthy, he will be up there for MVP. I hate to do it but I agree, this Cubs line-up is pretty damn good. And to think Soriano isn’t even in their line-up tonight. They don’t seem to hit as good on the road….but at Wrigley they are a force.

Don't forget Fukudome
What the Cubs offense really needed was more baserunners. Fukudome is delivering.

But the Cubs SI cover jinx starts this weekend right? Tonight doesn’t count because maybe not all newstands have the issue yet.
by KYCards on Apr 30, 2008 10:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The jinx
could start tomorrow for their rubber game with the Brew Crew (I’m predicting a Brewer loss tonight, amazing insight, I know) and then carry through the weekend. Yeah, that would be just about right.
by cardsgirl95 on Apr 30, 2008 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wishful thinking. The Cubs don't need anymore curses......
Do not take them lightly. They have a very good, not great, team. They have no glaring holes. They have holes, but no glaring holes. They have the free agent aquisition of the off season with Fukodome, they have been playing without Soriano. But you only have to be a very good team to win in the Central. Close to parity has been the history of this division, and you only have to be 1/2 up to win. I’m not saying the Cubs will win, I’m not saying the Cards will win, it’s going to be a slog for WHOEVER it is until the end. I do think the Brewers will take themselves out of it with poor defensive play. My gosh, have they no pride as an organization? I’ve never seen such a careless approach to defense as the whole Brewers organization seems to employ. Not even the Royals in their worst days were this bad on defense. Never count out the Astros; they have always mangaged to throw a wrench in at the end. The Pirates have a few young players to build a team around. They thought it was Jason Bay. But I think it’s Ian Snell, Nate McLouth, and Ryan Doumit. They will not be a factor until the end, when their few good young players go all out to secure their spot in the 2009 line up.
She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.
