Game 29 Open Thread/ Sweet on Sowers

See, that's the problem with phenoms. No matter how talented, any phenom is still just a kid, vulnerable to the struggles of a young player just like anyone else.

Luckily, the Cardinals took full advantage of Cueto's struggles last night, scoring early and often. Really not much of anything bad I can say about the game overall. I'm a little conflicted about the offense's performance; on the one hand, it makes me a little nervous the way they went to sleep after the second inning. On the other hand, they still took great at bats, grinding it out and getting on base, until the game was well in hand as the innings just melted away. The offense still generated a ton of baserunners, and left a ton of them on, but they did send Kid K to the showers early, so I choose not to dwell on it.

The pitching was outstanding. Jo-el struggled with his control a bit early, but didn't get hit. Then, when his team handed him a big lead, he pretty much just put it on autopilot and threw it down the middle. His relievers followed suit; Villone continued to make me feel stupid by pitching beautifully, and Reyes did just what you want to see in a seven run game. Yeah, Dunn beat him on that fastball, but if two outs in the ninth inning with a seven run lead isn't the time to just toss it up there and dare 'em to hit it, there is no right time. Bottom line, the pitchers took the lead they were given and forced the Reds to try and beat them. Nice job all around.

Today, of course, the Birds face Aaron Harang, who is quickly becoming a serious thorn in the collective Cardinal side. I'm hoping for the good Looper to show up today, because I don't think the Cards are going to put up a big number on the Harangutan. The Brewers did their job last night and helped you out, guys. Don't waste it. You win today, you're in first place. At least for a little while.

I have a quick topic I wanted to broach this morning. I was watching the Yankees and Indians play this past Saturday on Fox, largely because I really like Cleveland. Starting the game for the Indians was a young, soft tossing left hander named Jeremy Sowers.

Sowers is a personal favourite of mine, in large part because he reminds me a bit of John Tudor, who was one of my heroes when I was little. Sowers has a similar slingy sort of delivery from the left side, his repertoire consists mostly of slow stuff, offset with even slower stuff, and he seems to think his way through his outings.

Sowers was formerly a top prospect in the Cleveland organisation; he ranked as their second best prospect according to Baseball America in 2006. He came up later that year and was dynamite, looking to be every bit of the future #2 that everyone had thought he was going to be. Sowers started the 2007 season in Cleveland and struggled mightily. It was a bad year overall for upcoming Cleveland lefthanders; both Sowers and Cliff Lee were brutal and ended up cooling their heels back in Triple A. Cliff Lee, of course, is back up with the Indians now, and is currently carrying a 0.28 ERA.

Why do I bring this up? Because Sowers pitched very well against a monstrous Yankee lineup on Saturday; he ended up with 3 ER on his line, all of which scored after he left the game on a triple by Jorge Posada. I look at Sowers and I see a talented young lefty, who's still only 25 years old, and looks as if he may be putting it together to me. He's currently blocked in the Indians rotation by Aaron Laffey, another young lefthanded pitcher, and really has only been in the rotation because of injuries to the aforementioned Laffey and Jake Westbrook.

My question is this: is this the sort of pitcher that might be worth targeting for the Cardinals? I realise that this may not seem to make a whole lot of sense, given the logjam the Cards already appear to have. Between pitchers at the major league level and pitchers on their way back, El Birdos are going to have some very tough decisions to make in the coming weeks. Why would they go out of their way to acquire another arm, particularly another one who's mostly struggled in his brief ML career so far? Here's his page at First Inning.

I'm going to take the old axiom, that you can never have enough pitching, and modify it slightly. You can never have enough young, cost controlled pitching. Sowers is still pre-arbitration eligible, so he costs virtually nothing. He still has an option for this year, so he can be sent to the minors to continue to try and get himself on track this season. And most of all, this is a pitcher who, as recently as two years ago, was seen as a potential upper part of the rotation pitcher, who now finds himself trying to reestablish himself, blocked at the major league level.

I'm not sure exactly what it would take to acquire a guy like Sowers, but I can't imagine it would be too large a ransom. The Indians seem to be looking for some help in the outfield; what type of player would the Indians need to add in order to make it worth a guy like Schumaker? Note that I'm not necessarily advocating trading Skip specifically; please don't everyone get all huffy on me. But if you could get a legitimate return for a player like Skip, you would do well to consider pulling the trigger. He's probably not a starter on this team long term, with Rasmus waiting in the wings and everyone in the outfield hitting from the left side.

Better yet, what about our own problem child, Anthony Reyes? Reyes has been very good out of the 'pen this year, but still just doesn't seem as if he really fits in here. I still believe he would be better served in another organisation, with a little less baggage on everyone's part. Maybe Sowers is in the same boat; a new set of eyes might do him some good. I don't know how much interest Cleveland would have in Reyes; again, I'm simply throwing out the idea. If this sort of deal were made, Sowers could very well fit into the bullpen right now as a longman; maybe Duncan could do some good with him. Maybe not. I'm not sure.

Long term, I have to admit, I still see this team as being sellers this year. I hear talk of signing Kyle Lohse to a long term extension, and I cringe inwardly. As good as he's been, do we really believe in him for four years at $10 million+ a season? What happened to the mantra of flexibility, flexibility, and more flexibility? Don't get me wrong, I'm only hearing that from the media, so I have no idea if it's legitimate or not. But the Cards have a ton of talent already in the pipeline, and I fear the long term repercussions of signing a new batch of veteran starters to multi year deals.

I see Sowers as a chance to buy low on a pitcher who could still pan out to be much better than he's shown so far. The other half of the reason I've been mulling this over in my head lately is the performance this season of the Reds' young starter, Edinson Volquez. The Rangers had soured on the kid a bit, even after sending him all the way back down to low A and working him back up step by step last year. He showed tremendous progress, but the Rangers saw a chance to get Josh Hamilton, and they took it. Now Cincinnati is reaping the benefits, with Volquez throwing lights out so far. It wouldn't take a Josh Hamilton to pry Sowers loose, but I think he's a bit of a similar situation. The organisation he's in currently isn't a great fit for him; maybe we could put him to use here?

He pans out, you have even more flexibility to deal away some of you veteran pitching contracts at the deadline, opening up more spots to be filled by cost controlled youngsters. He doesn't; hopefully you didn't pay too much for him. I don't think you would have to.

So, what say you, Birders? Is this the kind of player the Cardinals would be well served to target, while his value is low and they might be able to bring him in for pennies on the dollar? Or do we already have too many pitchers as it is, and you want to see the team try to improve right now, as opposed to still focusing on the boring future? Is Sowers just a bad pitcher, and I'm fooling myself in thinking there may be something there? I'm interested to see what everyone else thinks about this, as it's not really the sort of move we're looking for the team to make, but I think it could be an opportunity.

Anyhow, game today at noon; let's go Birds! Losing to Cincinnati is shameful in the extreme; you will bring dishonour to your house if you fail to find victory today! Good luck, you'll probably need it with Harang on the mound. Go get 'em boys; let's head into the off day, and Chicago, with a full head of steam.

For some reason the whole post is wrapped in a tag

That causes it to display as a big block of fixed width text without linewraps.

I have no clue what the hell is going on.

Lohse last night

I dont know where you could get the applicable data but it seemed to me every hit off Lohse last night was hit very hard. i thought he got creamed last night and was extremely lucky that balls were hit at our infielders…dont know if anyone else noticed or if there is a stat to find to prove or disprove.

by UNCDubya on Apr 30, 2008 3:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I thought the opposite

Besides the long fly ball by JR. Most everything hit was either jammed inside or had the batter reaching. His only hit was a bloop. Im sure there were a few squared away balls that found fielders. But for the most part his biggest issue was the walks.

by Evilfrog on Apr 30, 2008 5:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Agree on Lohse

I don’t like the idea of an extension for Lohse, we need to get some contracts off the books and his is an easy one. If we are not in contention we trade him, if we are he can help us win now. Either way I look at him as a one year rental.

by StLHugo on Apr 30, 2008 10:28 AM EDT   0 recs

After a handful of starts

No one should get an extension, let alone a 2-year $13M one, which is what we gave El Pineiro after 11 starts. At the end of the season, we should look at his body of work as a whole and see if there is a spot for him in the rotation. This will include consideration of the fact that Lohse is a Boras guy who wanted a ton of money this last offseason. A good year with us will likely only further his demands in terms of years and dollars.

Also remember, Mulder may be dumped, Reyes won’t start, Thompson is a question mark, and Blooper is in the final year of his deal.

Right now, it would appear the rotation is:

(1) Carp
(2) Wagonmaker
(3) Colonel
(4) Pineiro
(5) ????

Of course, that’s assuming we don’t banish the Colonel to the ‘pen in favor of Blooper and Mulder pitching to contact. This could alter the 2009 projection substantially. So could where the resulting contact lands (the infield grass vs. the outfield grass).

by bgh on Apr 30, 2008 10:53 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Mulder’s looking at 8 million next year as an option. Looper is a free agent as well.

Just some tidbits.

by AdjustedExpectations on Apr 30, 2008 1:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

We have a ton of contracts coming off the books

next year looks like around 50mil allocated, we’re not scraping barrel.

I’m an advocate of signing him, but with caveats that qualify it. Do it right before using him as trade bait. Try for something def. lower than Suppan money. Around trade deadline time, if he’s being persued. If he wants to Boras walk, let him get traded. If he’s willing to play ball, don’t.

He’d do well on an incentive laden contract. He’s a better pitcher than what his record shows, with the Twins and not the greatest defense has hurt him, bounced around and traded hasn’t helped.

Rotating three pitchers around every year while relying heavily on Adam (which the other day seems scary) and Carp (who we have no clue how he’ll come back) doesn’t do us justice.

Lohse is a good kid, reasonable stuff and now has a an A grade defense behind him, playing rental with him doesn’t make sense. But by all means, if he is resigned, or offered. Do it smart. And have enough incentives around where the contract isn’t a liability should he injury out.

kennedy

Kennedy is sporting a 0.364 OBP this year so far. Second seems like a good spot for him in the order. He sure took to it nicely – for one game anyway…..

To me

It looks more like the infinity symbol, maybe because it keeps the links from going on to infinity.

I will put up a link to the Barton story at Yahoo because it’s given me an idea for his nickname. It seems he is a world traveler and has the daunting goal to visit every country on earth. With his basketball background in HS how about The Globetrotter.

I do admire him for such an undertaking but I think he should leave North Korea off the list. What with their love of missiles and having been know to both kidnap people and use slave labor, I doubt he would come home.

I'll probably be in the minority here

but I wouldn’t mind seeing Lohse extended. I realize that he doesn’t have the greatest track record but neithed did Suppan. Lohse is still just 29 and obviously has a lot of talent. We are going to need to keep a guy around for stability. Looper will almost certainly be gone and there is no guarentee that Carpenter and Mulder will be effective. We don’t have any pitchers ready to make an impact from the minors for at least another 2 years and the free agency market is going to be dry again. What other alternative is there?

by RabidBuffalo on Apr 30, 2008 10:44 AM EDT   0 recs

+1 with a caveat

If we could sign Lohse to a Pineiro-type deal, I don’t think it’s bad.

Sowers is another example of how we seem to fit well with Cleveland as a trade partner. What about something like Schu/Duncan/Reyes for Sowers & Josh Barfield? That gives us a young lefty and a young 2B.

Personally, I think we got hosed on that call.

by cardsfanindenver on Apr 30, 2008 11:04 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The Lohse/Suppan analogy

is a good one. IMO they should make a decision by August, based on how Carp and Mulder look and then try to extend him before the off-season. The off-seasons have been unpredictable, and someone might come along and offer him what he asked for last year. According to the Philly papers he turned down 21 mil for three years from the Phillies. The same offer might get him in season this year after last year’s personal disaster of waiting too long. If it looks like they’re going to need him, I wouldn’t be against that kind of contract- it’s the going rate. Like many others on this board I’m very skeptical of Mulder’s return and the durability of both Carp and Mulder. No more auditions by Ponson et.al. please.

by vinniefromjersey on Apr 30, 2008 11:10 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

turning down the Phillies

Loshe has talked at length about his dislike for pitching in Cincy or Philly due to their small ballparks. He thinks it’s a competitive disadvantage for those clubs in signing free agent pitchers. I am certain Loshe would take less money to play for the Cards than the Phillies. What that dollar figure is, who knows? One thing is for certain, Loshe’s market value goes up with every start. To me, it all comes down to the situation with Mulder. They can’t even contemplate resigning a pitcher in the range of Loshe’s payday until they know whether or not the Mulder option is going to be exercised. Get Mulder on an MLB mound, see what he’s got. If we decide to punt on Mulder (which I pray we do) then I think we should take a run at signing Loshe. The guy is a steady innings eater helped tremendously by the larger dimensions at Busch. The Suppan comparison is a good one.

Yes, you stockpile

all the promising young pitchers you can get yer greedy hands on! Not only do you need them on your own mound, but they are the currency that brings other good things—such as middle infielders who can actually hit.

Let’s face it, it’s easy to imagine us bailing out on Looper, Lohse, Reyes and Mulder in the very near future. Once that happens this “surplus” of pitching is gone.

I don't think we should resign Lohse

Yet. But Im open to the idea of talking to him. I would hate to see him leave the way Eckstien did. Willing to sign for less if than we thought. So we didn’t offer it to him.

However; at this point; I don’t think a multi year deal at $10 mil a year is a good idea.

by Evilfrog on Apr 30, 2008 11:03 AM EDT   0 recs

2 year $16.5 mil deal?

3rd year team option at $9 mil w/ $1 mil buyout? But would wait till Aug/Sept to do the deal….. no sense doing anything till then. Just ride this horse as long as he can stand it.

Reyes has been very good out of the ’pen?

I don’t have the time to go look up the numbers on all his appearances this year - damn this job of mine, anyway - but I have to say my impression is that he has had some good outings and some not-so-good outings.

I’m not down on Reyes. I feel bad for him, actually. I think he has some talent and is being pushed and prodded and shoved toward pitching in a way that goes against his strengths. But even as someone who appreciates his potential, I can’t say I’ve always been impressed with his performances this year.

If you can show me I’m wrong, and he has been nails, that’s cool.

Substitute McClellan in that sentence for Reyes, by the way, and I agree wholeheartedly. That guy has been terrific.

by Youneverknow on Apr 30, 2008 11:32 AM EDT   0 recs

I won't say very good. I'd just say good.

He really stunk in Pittsburgh, and got stuck with a loss for it. He’s been a little erratic performance wise. I think some of it is his adjustment to the bullpen, some of it is he has always taken a little time to settle into a game. He has shown excellent control, not so excellent command. This is where not pitching regularly is hurting him IMO, but there is no doubt the effort is there. He needs to throw that fastball UP in the zone; it appears to rise even higher and it’s difficult for just about anyone to hit, and too juicy a target to lay off of.

He’s going to be good for his new team. I hope it’s the Braves or the Phillies.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

If you're a fan of AK batting 2nd like I am, these quotes will put a smile on your face:

“I just think there’s good balance in that lineup,” La Russa said. “I want to go with it.”

“The thump is spread out a little bit more.”

Sounds like we might see it again today. I’d bet Ludwick will play instead of Duncan and Ryan might play in place of Izturis. Yadi may get the day off as well.

Good chance that Albert and Glaus sits also

Tony had stated that he would like to give Albert the day off before an off day. So he has two days to rest his elbow in a row. He gave Glaus the day off before last off day as well. I like this plan better than Glaus sitting 1 game out of every series.

by Evilfrog on Apr 30, 2008 12:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think

that LaRussa is going to do that every time – especially with both of them together. There are 17 off days. If Albert gets the day off before the off day every time, he’ll only play 145 games at the most, which would be the second least he has ever played in his career (143 in ‘06). I know LaRussa wanted to give him more time off but I don’t think he will play that little. Maybe 150 games. Everytime his bat is out of the lineup you’re looking at a very different and much weaker team.

Pujols v. Harang

Pujols is 12 for 34 (.353) lifetime against Harang with a K and an HR. No one else has had much success against him.

Izturis is 0-17, Duncan is 2-14, lots of 0fers and 1fers. Brendan Ryan is 1 for 2, but I don’t know if that’s enough to get him a spot start. Hopefully we have a big day and improve some of those numbers against one of the division’s best.

I like this better than my prediction above

I am a bit surprised that both Glaus and Pujols are in the lineup. I do understand that this is an important game though. Further, I think that Tony really hates losing series he can win and with the loss to Arroyo on Monday I can understand his thinking.

I think the key difference...

between today and the last game before an off day is the opposition. San Fran or Cinci. We may be battling it out with the Reds for the division come September…San Fran will be lucky to finish above .400 (though they have some talented young pitching).

What does it take for Barton to ever get another start?!
