i’ll be up in the mountains today --- in a conference room, not on a ski slope --- so i won’t be able to keep an eye on the game thread. azru, houston, and RB --- if the thread gets long and unwieldy and slow, would one of you mind popping open an overflow thread? we should be ok through 500-600 comments or so, but the number isn't as important as the performance. if the site starts running poorly, an overflow thread should rectify.
random notes from the first coupla games:
- kyle mclellan’s slider must be some kind of a pitch. he threw it 4 times tuesday night, and the rockies swung at all 4 --- they missed 3 times and chopped a weak grounder to 3d base the 4th time. last night he threw it 6 times in the 7th inning --- 1 swing/miss, 1 ball, and 4 called strikes. i don’t know how many times he threw it in the 6th --- pitch fX was on the blink that inning, and i can’t access the mlb.tv feed because of the stupid blackout rules --- but he only threw 6 pitches in that inning; i doubt any of them was a slider.
- kyle lohse is supposed to be throwing more curveballs; that’s what duncan wants, anyway. but he only threw 5 tuesday night (in 74 pitches), per pitch fX --- two to helton, one to hawpe, and one each to nix and taveras. 4 of the 5 were over the plate. helton put two of them in play --- lined one for a single, grounded out on the other.
- the bullpen delivered the same results last night as tuesday night --- 4 innings pitched, 2 runs allowed. yet they're perceived to have failed on tuesday while doing their job on wednesday . . . . what we really mean is that the offense failed on tuesday but did its job on wednesday. if you ask me, the relievers pitched better on tuesday even though they took the loss.
- think troy glaus is pressing? he saw 13 pitches last night and swung at 9 of them.
- red baron wondered yesterday how long it had been since 3 cardinal players make their big league debuts in a single game (mclellan, barton, and washington all broke in tuesday night). the post-dispatch has the answer --- it last happened in 1955. alas, retrosheet's box scores reach back only to 1956, so we can't find the actual game. cardinal players who made their big-league debut with the cards that season include bill vidron, ken boyer, don blasingame, larry jackson, lindy mcdaniel, and luis arroyo . . . . it might be that virdon, boyer, and arroyo or jackson all debuted together on opening day (or soon thereafter). that's only a guess.

The defense
failed on Tuesday, not the bullpen. ERA 0.00- record 0-1. They did pitch better on Tuesday (except for Franklin, who was smoked by Tulo and Helton). McClellan might not have gotten scored on Wedneday if Izturis was an inch taller, or if Lud makes the catch in right ( they did not replay this, so I'm not sure if it was catchable- I thought it was originally).
So far, the pitching has not looked bad against a very tough Rockies' lineup. I'm encouraged.
So far (I know this is a ridiculous comment), Glaus reminds me of Ray "Jabbo" Jablonski, third baseman in the mid-50's who drove in over 100 runs for a couple of seasons, but had very high error totals. I hope I'm wrong.

technical glitches
"Jabbo" sure had plenty of those, according to baseball-ref. I don't think Glaus will be that bad if he'd GET ON TOP OF THE DAMN BALL when he throws.

Do we think McLellan's eventual role
is still that of a starter? If he keeps kicking butt, do you think do you think Duncan might move him into that role later this year?
by sdrone on Apr 3, 2008 9:14 AM EDT 0 recs
Closer
I'm only speculating, but maybe they see him as a potential closer to take overy Izzy's spot when he goes kaput in the next few months or year. I'd actually feel very confident with McLellan in that role after he gets some more experience.

I'd think
that, barring a meltdown, Perez is the closer of the future, unless Izzy gets hurt tomorrow, in which case I'd expect Springer to be on in the ninth.
I don't see any reason to think McClellan would be anything but a starter thus far. He wouldn't be the first starter to begin his ML career in the 'pen. He's done a great job so far, but there's still 160 games to go.

efficient
maybe it was more apparent because he followed wellermeyer, but McLellan is so efficient with his pitches - throws strikes, generally weak contact - that he seems like a perfect started to go deep into games. I was listening to the Rockies radion announcers and they were pretty high on his curve, apparently has good control of a slider, and has a little pop to the fastball. Anyone know if he throws anything offspeed?

welle pitching lastnight
What was he throwing that was causing the rockies such fits? One broke a little (86ish mph) and one broke a lot (84ish mph) both away from right-handers. Was it a cutter and a slider? or was he fiddling with his slider. The couple of innings I watched saw some rockies hitters very confused up at the plate.
by Birds on the Matt on Apr 3, 2008 9:14 AM EDT 0 recs
Slider
Wellemeyer had two very good sliders last night. He would throw one that broke alot and was a bit slower and a sharper one that broke less and stayed in the strike zone. I did not know that Wellemeyer possessed a good slider. I thought he was basically a fastball-change guy. The slider he had last night was a very effective pitch.

stupid blackout rules
is right. i live in iowa, and we have 20 free games on local tv. all the others are blacked out. i've whined and complained but mlb doesn't seem to care. the only other games i get are when they play the cubs (who have all 162 of their games here on cable) or if they get a nat'l game. i'd be willing to shell out the dough year in and year out, too. stupid

FSNMW
do you get FSN MW by default on your cable/satellite? If not how close are you to Chicago and St Louis? Last year the cable company and satellites in the Peoria IL area decided to carry only the Chicago regional sports and dropped FSN MW. Many fans complained and called the companies, along with FSN and MLB, etc. Eventually they got the area deemed as what I guess can be called a "dual region" or something to that effect because they now have both FSN and Comcast Sports Net without blackouts. It sounds like you are in a similar situation.

Will Rico get a start today?
Think LaRussa will give Glaus a day off? Pujols too? With Duncan hurt, Pujols will probably play. Hopefully Ankiel will bat 4th, Rico in 5th spot or move Molina to 5 and Rico to 6th.
Prediction:
Schu
Ludwick
Pujols
Ankiel
Molina
Washington
Kennedy
Thompson
Izturis

Glaus and days off
There was an article this spring on TLR"s plan to watch Glaus and possibly give him a day off each series. Day game after a night game is always a good time.
I'd rather see Glaus work through the mini-slump especially with Ankiel protecting him.

I'm pretty sure
that Glaus swung at the first pitch 3 times last night. He definitely appeared to be pressing. He'll be ok but he's going to have to relax at the plate. I don't know his tendencies re: swinging at the first pitch, patience at the plate and can't look it up right now, but he'll surely get better as he settles in.
by houstoncardinal on Apr 3, 2008 10:14 AM EDT 0 recs
I think...
that they need to move him down in the order to the fifth spot. He's not been a good cleanup hitter his whole career and I wonder if that has something to do with the pressure of hitting behind good hitters in the three hole and being expected to consistently drive in runs. I think Ankiel would be just as good a fit in the cleanup spot with Glaus hitting 5th on a daily basis.

I think the difference between the 4th and 5th spot
is an aberration. Hitting 4th isn't the reason he swung at the first pitch 3 times last night. If I remember correctly, Tony's comments were about Glaus' performance last year, in which there was a huge difference between his production in the 4 and 5 spots. It was based on 200 AB's in the 4 hole.
For his career, his OPS is 50 points higher in the 5th spot but there are many reasons this could be true. For example, it might be that he was healthier or younger in the years in which he batted 5th. The idea that he just can't hit well when he sees a 4 next to his name is more than a little bizarre.
There are reasons why we should consider putting him in the 5 hole. They include splitting up the 2 righties (him and Pujols) as well as splitting up the 2 biggest power hitters on the team to make the most of the lineup. It's not a bad idea at all to put Duncan or Ankiel between them but to do it just b/c we think he can't hit well when penciled in 4th in the lineup is silly. The best way to do it would probably be to have Pujols hit 2nd and Glaus hit 4th.
He hasn't struggled the 1st 2 games b/c he hit 4th in the lineup. He was 0-4 w/ a K in the 1st game hitting 5th.

50 OPS points
is hardly an aberration or statistical anomaly. It's not a huge difference, but he does hit fewer homers in the 4 spot compared to the 5. Glaus has plenty of career at-bats in both spots, so the small sample size from last season does represent career averages.
I didn't say he was struggling because he was hitting fourth, but I do think it's a reason why he's pressing. When teams put Albert on base to pitch to you, THREE TIMES, that is enough to make a guy press to get himself off the schnide. I think we saw today that he's more comfortable in the five spot: he worked counts much better and was more patient.
Players not hitting well in certain spots in the lineup bizarre? I totally disagree with that. Edgar Renteria hit much better when placed near the bottom of the lineup when he was a Cardinal, Rafael Furcal turned in one of his worst years last year when placed in the 2 hole instead of leadoff (you don't see Torre making that mistake again, do you?), and Robby Cano has never hit leadoff for the Yankees even though he is a prototypical leadoff hitter -- but if you look at his numbers as a leadoff guy, you can see why he doesn't hit near the top of the lineup often. It's a psychological thing more than anything else, but it does have effects on performance and a players approach at the plate.

Technically we should be hitting Glaus 6th then if you're a believer
And uhh Renteria's career lines from the 2-hole vs the rest of the lineup are pretty much identical.
And Robinson Cano's leadoff "career" consists of 10 at bats...he got 4 hits. If you're talking about his batting 2nd 97% of those at-bats came when he was a mediocre rookie and he has since improved.
And Rafael Furcal has hit almost exclusively leadoff aside from 2001 I don't know where that's from. Oh and Furcal way outperformed the rest of his numbers that year from...you guessed it...the 2 hole.

At what point are we going to get rid of
this medieval approach we have toward putting players' batting averages next to their names in the lineup? I'm not criticizing you, C4E. I imagine you pulled this straight from the p-d website or somewhere else. There was a lot made last night on the broadcast of Ankiel's good game, and rightfully so, but Pujols was 5-5 last night w/ 2 singles and 3 walks. His OBP right now is .667. That's what we ought to be including next to their names. Using BA is archaic -- again, C4E, not a criticism of you at all.

anyone else worried about the bullpen today?
The Cardinals’ bullpen, which has pitched eight innings in the first two games, will be a bit short today.
La Russa said the most likely eligibles are righthander Anthony Reyes and lefthanders Ron Villone and Randy Flores.
Righthander Jason Isringhausen, who warmed up several times on Wednesday without being used, could pitch, if necessary, La Russa said.

Reason to worry
I too am excited to see anthony coming out of the pen - and I really hope he can shut them down. However, I am afraid we have some reason to worry. Check out the splits:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/psplit.cgi?n1=reyesan01&year=00
To summarize - his career OPS against numbers:
Time through order:
1: 0.876
2: 0.790
3: 0.694
Inning:
1: 0.958
2: 0.820
3: 0.879
4: 0.636
5: 0.679
Pitch count:
1-25: 1.023
26-50: 0.723
Men on base
empty: 0.746
men on: 0.893
None of these numbers scream "make me a releiver!!!" I know he did better this spring with men on base, and I hope that is an indicator of his turning the corner. Would be a good test if he can go 2-3 innings against the rockies.

Did anyone else find LaRussa's bullpen moves last night
a little curious? Specifically, he sat Izzy down in the bottom of the 8th when we took a 6-2 lead and got Reyes up -- the ideal spot for the last man to pitch. He threw a few warm-up tosses and we added a couple more runs and then LaRussa SAT REYES DOWN, and got Springer up. Springer, for now, needs to be used in higher leverage situations and Reyes, while we're still unsure how he'll do out of the pen, in lower leverage situations and yet, with a bigger lead -- 6 runs -- he went w/ the better reliever than he intended to use up 4. Very strange.
Last night's 9th inning was the ideal opportunity for Reyes' first bullpen appearance and now Springer is probably unavailable today. Bizarre.

Long men
can't pitch 1 inning? Maybe he was afraid Thompson might not make it out of the 3rd or 4th today but then your question is a good one -- why even bother getting him up?
And my question still stands -- why use Springer -- presumably your 2nd best reliever (though Tony believes Franklin's better) -- in mop up duty? That's what the last man in your pen is for!

he throws hard
I don't know how accurate the rockies stadium gun is, but I was at a game last year where the stadium gun was reading 98 in the sixth inning.

Damn ...
98? ... that's bringing it ... even with the threat of rain, they're going to have to be disciplined and make him throw strikes ... we have some of the best fastball hitters around, so I hope we'll get him early ...

April 12th, 1955
The last date that three Cards made their debuts was April 12th, 1955.
Baseballreference.com lists the debut for each player, so I looked up Boyer. Bb-ref also has a page for debuts, which is sortable by date, as per here:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/ML_1955_debut_date.shtml#bat
So the three that debuted were:
Boyer
Virdon, and
Barney Schultz,
the Rico Washington of his day (debut at age 28, makes it back to the majors at 32, skips to age 34 to post a sub-league ERA, the first time in his career).

They had at least four players debut that day
I iused the same method as Dave and noticed that Herb Moford also made his debut on April 12, 1955.

You're right
I didn't think to look for a fourth.

I wasn't looking for a fourth guy
I just found a different third guy than you did.
