Dan MacLaughlin commentary and injured pitchers update
I know he's not everyone's cup of tea, but he has a pleasant voice, solid play by play, and thought he did a very good interview with Jeff Luhnow this evening.
He's a bit of a homer, but I don't think there's anything wrong with being a homer if that means getting excited when your guys make great, exciting plays, like McClellan and barton last night and Ankiel tonight. It only bugs me when homerism turns apologist, then it gets annoying.
Jim Hayes interviewed Mozeliak this evening, and for those that didn't see it Mo basically thought that if everything goes according to plan, Pinero and Mulder should be ready sometime towards the end of the month, Clement "a little bit later than that", and Carp sometime in July.

Grumble...
maybe so, but stuff like that should be saved for the post game show, or pre-game show. They shouldn't broadcast that stuff on 60% of the screen while completely ignoring the game that is going on. The game is why people are watching, Not interviews.

That would be
good material for pre- or post-game shows, but those of us with MLB.tv only wouldn't get it because MLB cuts off the feed as soon as they go to commercial after the last out. The part that REALLY bugs me is putting the interviews on screen. I don't need to SEE them talking, I can HEAR them just fine. I am here to see a baseball game.

Agree....but
I agree. I'd rather see a full screen of the game while the interview is going on, however if that had been the case this evening we never would have seen the priceless expression on Lunhow's face when yadi threw that guy out at second.

True.
But a small box in the corner would be fine for interviews if they want to show them on screen. FSN wastes alot of space around the split screen with too much background. Then you get just a tiny slice of the game when they are using the split screen. Jeff Luhnow may have had a good view, but those of us out in TV Land barely saw Yadi throw out Tulo.

I like listening
to Dan and Al. Dan really is a professional, and you're right about the interview too. Very nice. I think the two make a pretty good team, and they make me laugh all the time too. It's really entertaining. Does anyone remember last season when Al asked, "where are those damn emails?" Dan laughed for a whole inning. Hilarious!

I like them too
I think they work well together, and I've learned a lot of insight on pitching from Al over the years. I kind of get the feeling that Al hates Dan though.

Better in game two
I bought the Extra Innings package this year and watched the first two games. After game one I was very disappointed with the broadcast. I thought the announcers were boring. In the game thread I said something like, "Who are these boring people talking over the game." They certainly were not doing play by play. They spent most of the time talking about anything other than the game. I really don't care what they had for lunch, or who they ran into outside the stadium. The other thing that bothered me was Dan talked about Schu's catch on several occasions but never showed it, and if he said 'washed away' one more time I would have thrown a shoe at the TV.
I guess now there are banners all over the screen they have less to do. Like keep track of whats going on during the game. I also don't like the interview during the game. Maybe I am just too old, and I like the play by play guy to talk about what I am seeing. I also think all the effects are distracting. I know everybody does that now, but why do we have to suffer through sound effects every time the banner comes up on the screen.
Game two was better. Both Dan and Al seamed to be paying more attention to the game being played. So I will cut them some slack and right off game one as them shaking off some rust.
Growing up listening to Harry Kalas do Phillie games on the radio, and watching Vince Scully and Joe Garagiola on the NBC have spoiled me.

Just like I don't think you can compare
players from different eras, I don't think you can compare TV announcers from different eras, either. Guys like Jack Buck, Vin Scully, Ernie Harwell, Harry Caray and Mel Allen grew up on the radio, where they had to be vivid, descriptive and be good storytellers, and then they were the TV pioneers when baseball migrated to that medium. Their transition to TV was smooth, because fans were already familiar with them so their style was all they knew. The TV guys today have the technology on the screen not to have to update the count, where the catcher is positioning behind the plate, little things like that, and it's become more of an information about the team theme, if you will, and I think Danny Mac excels at that.

I didn't compare anyone...
...not yet anyway. I basically said that the Cardinal announcers suck. They are boring and don't seam to be watching the game. Today my daughter, a huge Yankee fan, was watching the Cards game. She said, "These guys are terrible it really makes me appreciate Micheal Kay and Paul O'Neil." Well tonight I am watching the Yankee's and she is right. Micheal Kay and Paul O'Neil blow the Cardinal broadcast team away! Now I compared them to a contemporary team.
Is the game three job is the best they can do? If so then the Cardinals should be embarrassed by the broadcast quality.

Michael Kay makes my ears bleed
and I love the Yankees. but he is... ugh... like the audio equivalent of a bull in a china shop.
Dan is definitely not the best in the business, but after watching telecasts by the Marlins and Pirates ad nauseum last year, I definitely found myself missing Dan 'n Al a lot.

Dan and Al
>>"Who are these boring people talking over the game." They certainly were not doing play by play. They spent most of the time talking about anything other than the game.<<
This is exactly my complaint with Dan and Al. It drives me up the wall. Dan has these prepared notes of garbage he wishes to talk about during the game that do not have anything to do with the game itself. It's prearranged filler. He then starts a conversation over the game with Al about his garbage and away the these two go off in their space ship.
Yes, Dan is a nice man with a nice voice but he does not understand the art of calling a game. And he should know better because Dan once told a story of the first time he showed up to do a game on TV. Mr. Jack Buck stuck his head into the TV booth pre-game to check on Dan. Dan is busy studying his notes on the non-game garbage his wants to use to talk over the game.
Jack Buck, "Kid, what are you doing?"
Dan, "I'm studying my notes with material to use during game as background."
Jack Buck grabs Dan's notes and rips them to shreds. "The game's out there son." He points to the field. "Just tell the people what's going on out there." He turns and leaves the booth.
Dan, oh Dan, how could you have missed what the master was trying to tell you?
by jjray on Apr 3, 2008 10:45 AM EDT 0 recs
Well....
Far be it from me to even begin to disagree with Mr. Buck, but you've still gotta prepare. Especially with baseball having so much dead time, you have to prepare to have things to talk about between pitches, etc. Player histories, backgrounds, stats.
Telling what is happening is really only have the battle. With TV, the viewer can see what's going on. The PxP guy's job is to _accentuate_ what is going on on the field with information the average fan at home wouldn't know.

dan and al
The TV viewer only sees the hitter and pitcher. The game is much more than that. Then there is calling the strategy of each game situation. That takes preparation. I much prefer the radio style play by play on TV versus the endless banter about someone's kid or the golf game yesterday or Al's days in the majors 20+ years ago. Vin Sculley and Joe Buck do TV in the radio fashion. Do they work in conversation about other stuff? Yes, but it is confined to moments when the game action is not in progress. They immediately suspend the filler talk to call the game as it happens. Rooney is very good about this on the radio side. Dan and Al have the habit of just ignoring the game as if it were an intrusion on their talk show.
BTW, I wonder if Dan reads this board? In last night game, there was a pronounced curtailing of the off-topic discussions by Dan. It appeared Dan did his best for that one game to keep conversation limited to subjects germane to the game at hand. I do hope this is a trend and not a one-time freak occurrence.

good points all...
they have an interesting dynamic...last night Dan kept trying to get Al to answer a question regarding the mindset of a pitcher in a certain situation and Al kept talking about other things that had nothing to do with the question. Dan had to ask 4 times to get Al to answer the question. I think awkward live televsion is funny so I was entertained. My thing with Dan is how young he is. He must have been, what, 21,22, when he got his start? He works all year long for every St. Louis team that Fox Sports MW covers and he has handled it incredibly well. I hope he sticks around so we can continue to watch him mature and develop his own style.

Al good...Dan can go
I love Hrabosky. Dan is like the little boy who tugs at his dad's pant legs asking for a quarter. I'd like to see a better play by play guyin there. On opening day ESPN picked up the Tigers/Royals game on FSN Detroit and the whole presentation was much more smooth and the picture was even better! I dont know how the industry works but maybe they need producers?

Oh Yeah
I try not to pay attention but the supporting cast that do pre/post game, in-studio, and interviews on the field are pathetic, they are not at all entertaining. Like watching a funeral. Basically then keep Hrabosky...can the rest. I pay 5.99 extra a month to watch FSNMW on dish.

Jonny Miller
To be more positive, I think Jonny Miller on ESPN is the best play by play guy i see regularly.
