Maybe it has already been noticed....

but for all the guys watching the game on TV tonight, how on earth is the guy in the red-shirt sitting by the cardinals dugout fitting in his seat. Not to be rude but that guy has to be 500 plus pounds. Just looks uncomfortable.

by Pujols for MVP on Apr 29, 2008 9:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i agree he looks uncomfortable

but as a guy who weighs a bit over 500 myself, that guy looks a lot bigger than me, i would guess him around 600+

Pujols is the greatest Cardinal in my lifetime.

That's what the Rockies called Josh Fogg last year

IIRC he went up against some of the big-name pitchers of the NL and did a great job.

scott hatteberg is a good offensive player that you want to have on your ballclub? he’s a first baseman with a career .773 ops.

thanks, i’ll take albert. or, hell, skip schumaker.

Does the prospect of a Skip, Rasmus, Ankiel OF

Excite anyone else? The defense would be unreal.

by TheBirds on Apr 29, 2008 10:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i asked joe sheehan in a bp chat

he said cards couldn’t contend in 2008 OR 2009. i gave him 2008, but then said, 2009 you have perez and some other young guys in the pen, garcia, and a “duncan/rasmus/ankiel outfield.” his response was: still no, “and that’s giving you full credit for a ‘duncan/rasmus/ankiel outfield’ being a good thing.”

i’d probably revise to skippy or lud at this point instead of duncan, but i still think that’s a solid outfield.

e'rebuilding mang

by nycbirdo on Apr 29, 2008 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and for a GM, more importantly,

that’s an almost FREE outfield. Granted, Ank is an FA after this season, but if you can cover the outfield for a few million, and get good play out of it, that leaves a lot of cash elsewhere.

by tom s. on Apr 29, 2008 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Problems are elsewhere

Namely the back end of the rotation (and the front end if Carp can’t bounce back) and the middle infield.

Villone may be mop-up

but he’s done a damn good job. I’m sure he’ll get sent packing when TJ is ready to go but if he doesn’t come back sharp, the Cards won’t hesitate to bring him back up.

was just thinking that TLR seemed unwilling to use him

but he’s seen a lot more innings recently. Maybe he gained some trust w/ tony and dave?

Not that taking the eighth in a 7-0 game is high pressure, but as a general observation.

he has a right handed clone down in AA Springfield named Shane Robinson who is hitting .419 this year.

Reyes tried the throw an "F-U" fastball at 96 right by Dunn

I'm with you, HL. You have to challenge him with your best pitch.

Dunn is always a home run or strike out candidate. But he didn’t get through the inning without a run scoring. Just gives field management another reason to try and push him back to Memphis.
I’d still rather see him starting, since that isn’t going to happen I’d like him to go to the Braves-to make my son happy or to Philly, which is my second favorite national league team.

I'm not so sure

A) Let’s see how they match up against teams that aren’t the Pirates

B) A lot of dudes on that roster are way overachieving at the moment. Lee and Ramirez are always dangerous, but I have a hard time believing that Reed Johnson and Theriot will continue to hit for the average they are at the moment

by cloistermaximus on Apr 29, 2008 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, Reed Johnson is over from the other league.

He might have an advantage for awhile while the teams get to know him. Fukodome has changed everything in that line up, IMO. And Derrek Lee having a Derrek Lee type season.

Franchise record on the line today

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=280429124
“The Cardinals, lightly regarded entering the season for the first time this decade, are 17-11 and tied the franchise record for wins in April.”

So if we win today we will break the franchise record for wins in April, who would have thought?

by StLHugo on Apr 30, 2008 8:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

2006 and 2000 are the other teams to get 17 wins in April

More notes from that article:

“Glaus has 12 doubles, tied with Edgar Renteria (2003) for most in April for the Cardinals dating to 1956. He has only one home run, but his 21 RBIs is second best in his career behind 24 in 2002. ... The 2006 and 2000 Cardinals teams also won 17 games in April. ... Dunn and Griffey both have six homers at 3-year-old Busch Stadium, tied for the team lead.”

If our season ends with the result that either the 2000 (DIV Champs) or 2006 (you have to ask?) seasons did I will be happy.

by StLHugo on Apr 30, 2008 8:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just cannot be more pleased

with our pitching staff in April.

Now, I KNOW it’s April. But what a great surprise. Wellemeyer? Damn. Lohse? SWEET. Piniero? McClellan? Heck, I didn’t expect all this.

If we can just avoid overworking the bullpen and figure out what to do with Reyes…..

I dunno if Kinney will ever fully recover but I’m looking forward to guys returning from injuries over the course of the year.

If you liked last night's lineup, you'll like this quote:

TLR: “I just think there’s good balance in that lineup. I want to go with it.”

“The thump is spread out a little more.”

Couldn’t agree more Tony! Some people on here bash TLR for his stubborn ways but in all reality, he’s gonna mix stuff around until he finds what works best for this team.

I hope we see the same lineup out there today except Ludwick in for Duncan and Ryan in for Izturis.
