remember the old cartoon show Johnny Quest? i guess cincinnati fans have already thought of that one regarding their rookie pitcher . . . .
not to be a nattering nabob, but cueto looks like the type of pitcher the cards don't hit --- think tim lincecum. actually, most teams don't hit pitchers like this: high strikeouts, low walk total, doesn't give up many hits. his only weakness so far has been a susceptibility to the gopher ball. . . .
i'll be out this evening; overflow thread is preprogrammed to kick in at about 7:45 p.m. CDT.

At the Memphis Redbirds game vs. the Iowa Cubs Saturday night
After D’Angelo Jiminez got on base (and, after a few beers for me), I yelled, “DFA IZTURIS! CALL UP JIMINEZ!”
Then, after Hoffpuir whacked one to the track, even though it was caught, I yelled, “DFA MILES! CALL UP HOFF!”
It felt good to vent.

Cueto is on my fantasy team and I really hope he hurts my fantasy team tonight…(gah, I hate saying that!) Go Cardinals!

lol, I had one of those moments a week and a bit back.
Laid down a few bills on the Spurs to come back in game one at half. But I wanted Shaq to win, when Duncan was going for the 3 pointer I was like ‘Yes, No, Yess!”

That's one of the differences between Dusty and Tony

Kennedy
in the two hole. Hmm….....
by mikeonthecards on Apr 29, 2008 7:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
awesome
he should be there.
Tony uses the #2 hole to boost young hitters and hitters in slumps – Ankiel, Barton, Duncan, Edmonds, ...
However, what’s best for Albert is to have a low power contact hitter – one who most likely is on 1b when he is on. Albert is more likely to get pitches that way.

not only that
but having duncan move down, as well as glaus puts some power down in the order

The best part of the lineup is that we have 3 guys behind Pujols that have alot of power.

I’m kind of intrigued by this lineup, with the exception of Izturis again.

Hey, haven't seen this lineup yet.
Really not much to complain about I guess. I prefer Ryan over Izturis but w/e. Thankfully we’ve got our real leadoff hitter tonight.
This pitcher is one of the up-and-comers though so I hope we can get to him, or else it will be a long night. I like Piniero though so I think we’ve got a good shot.
by TheBirds on Apr 29, 2008 7:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Really interested about tonight's lineup
This could be a winner, even if we are facing a very talented young fireballer, the type of pitcher that has been our kryptonite this young season. (Not that we’ve been Supermen.)

Instead of Free Brian Barton
How about Jail Chris Duncan?
Or what about Trade Chris Duncan?
Then Again Bench Chris Duncan?
Any of those is fine. I can’t watch him stumble like a baby deer on ice out there in LF anymore and then NOT hit HRs.

And we’ll be happy to watch him stumble. He missed Spring Training and is league average in zone rating. His power will even out, just like that of the Trojan Horse, and we’ll all be popping open Busweisers in celebration.

Do you think we'd trade him though?
He’s not a solid trade chip with his questionable fielding and splits.
And considering that he’s our backup 1B’er should something happen to Albert (or Albert goes for surg early). Seems like we’re stuck with him, for better or worse

If I had to pick another OF to play 1st
Should Dunc be gone I’d think about Luddy. I don’t know if he has any experience, but imagine that line up.
Skip, Rick, Razzmatazz, and Luddy.
We’ll just move Albert over to 2nd post surg, let him get a All Star nomination there too.
by AdjustedExpectations on Apr 29, 2008 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think he's a decent first baseman in the field...
and a prototypical AL DH. A team like the Twins would be an ideal trade partner. They have a decent middle infield prospect named Trevor Plouffe, and maybe a pitching prospect as well.
Trade Dunc for Plouffe and another guy, let Kennedy play out his contract in 2009, and then bring up Plouffe.
Just an idea.

For the record I would just like to say that
I really like tonight’s lineup. Duncan should be a 6 hitter. And while Yadi has made improvements as a hitter the past few years, he should never hit higher than 7th.
The only thing that would make it better is Ryan at SS batting 9th.

Must admit
I’d like to have Molina in 6th.
If I’m listening to the game instead of watching all I can imagine coming on the radio should Molina be on first with a pitcher up to bat.
“Pitcher hits a groundball to first, Molina belly flopping to second.. is out, and the throw to first… out”
With Duncan up to bat at least we’re in a situation where Molina is less likely to be out should he get on.
Just some ramblings.

For anyone not watching
Patterson went on contact, ball 1 hopped to Glaus. Glaus caught it chest high and engaged Patterson in a rundown. Patterson went back to 3rd and for some reason, the runner that had advanced from 3rd went back to 2nd. Patterson, however, gave up and ran to the dugout. So, the other guy was now caught in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd.

So I didn’t see it, but it’s just curious to me that if it took long enough for Yadi to get to 2nd base, then I’d imagine that’s almost enough time for most anyone to get from 1st to home. I understand that there are strange doubles and stuff, was kinda trying to be funny.

It's tough to say a guy is done based on just 1 month
he wasn’t exceptionally good last year but he was a servicable MLB starter. I’m sure Matt has retired for 2008 just to save face for the Pirates. It’s tough to take $10 M from a team and then go sign another contract with another team.

I don't know
did you see him pitch this year? Whatever he had is gone. No kick on the fastball, no bend on the curve, he just looked spent.
It was hard to see. He was one of my favs but he looked pretty done.
by RabidBuffalo on Apr 29, 2008 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree, he was pitching awful
but you never know with a guy. Mechanics could kill velocity. If he wasn’t experiencing pain, he could be pulling a Verlander and have his mechanics so out of wack that he lost 5 mph on his fastball.
Sometimes this sort of thing can snowball. Look at Mike Mussina last season. He couldn’t get anyone out for a stretch there in the 2nd half but he worked on it this off-season and he has done pretty well for a guy who doesn’t have that 94 mph fastball anymore.
