so far this year, even when there's nothing happening in a given game . . . . there's always something happening. we're through 5, and the cards lead it, 2 (generously speaking) to 0 . . . . .

Chacon batting?
gameday says chacon is batting for himself? Isn’t he at 100 pitches already?
i guess he has shut us down, kinda, the past couple innings…

is miles really playing 3rd?
Did Troy get the day off?
C'mon you Redbirds, lets prove em' wrong, again!
no
troy left cuz is eye was watering, after striking out looking twice. miles replaced him in the 3rd.
"Them Cubbies can kiss my ass" -Dizzy Dean
He struck out twice with the bases loaded
and then saw Madusa or something, left the game with “bad eyes”.

i love leading the league in GIDP's
means we’re getting a lot of guys on base…
Skip has had 3 of those 6 in the last 2 games; I wouldn’t be too concerned.
And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...
might also have something to do
with the fact that our #9 hitter has gotten on base at a .571 clip the last 2 games.
Now I am kind of concerned… skip might break the record!
And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...

7 IP, 2 Hits, 1 BB. Only 2 K, but that’s ok…

why pitch to Lee?
I don’t have the benefit of video – I’m assuming the pitch to Lee was a strike … which begs the question, why throw a strike to a dangerous hitter like Lee in that situation? Isn’t there a ‘book’ that says you don’t let a guy like Lee beat you? Doesn’t Tony have a copy of that book? Is Blum really that scary?

Izzy and Springer
Are not looking good this year. I think you have to have them both on a short leash. Izzy is a known health risk and Spinger is at the age where sudden collapse isn’t out of the question.
Our offense
is just flat out ugly on games like tonight. We just can’t get any of our guys home.
I think it is time for Hal McRae to be shown the door and time to bring in somebody who might be able to help guys like Ankiel, Glaus & Duncan.
This may sound hindsight ish
but I would have liked to see them squeeze Ryan home to tie the game. Rick strikes out too much and isn’t swinging well lately (see that fastball that was at his f—king eyes for the K) and that run is so critical.
Boo on Izzy too. Something is wrong. I’m guessing the hip is acting up again.
i thought the exact same thing
when rick was up because i thought there was no way he was getting on and then with the tie they pitch to albert
in a tie game and no one on and two outs
they would at least consider it. not a guarantee
ank is coming back to earth
i think its obv the talent is still there, but i think he has to change his approach to hitting
swinging at balls is not a good way to get the job done, he isnt vlad

not much reason to stay interested when you’re way down, except the prospect of seeing a position player pitch
Not really looking forward to it
and I bet the Cardinals hitters are not either, Oswalt has owned us for years.
I think the trouble is...
other than Pujols, they don’t have anyone who is really even a good hitter.
Most of their outfielders are pretty much average. That is, hit .270, 20-25 homeruns, but not really studs. Skippy is the only one of the bunch that will hit for average, most likely. And he has no power
Glaus isn’t terrible, but he’s got no HR power anymore, nor will he hit for average..
Kennedy and Miles might hit for average, but they have no power. Same for Ryan, really, although he’s better than Izturis. Yadi is the same, except really slow.
Start Ludwick vs righties (maybe this will work)
i think we have guys that can be good hitter though
skip has shone some good things at leadoff, if ank can get more consistant he can be a great player
barton is young, rasmus is being groomed, glaus has to come around i hope

I don't know, though...
I think most of their peaks are average.
Take Skippy for instance. I really think he can hit above .300 at the major league level, but at the same time, I don’t think he’s going to ever going to have power. He’s just not big enough for that.
Duncan is never going to hit for average. And his power is down because I think he’s shortened his swing a little (probably afraid to swing too hard, thanks to his hernia).
Glaus is a career .260 hitter, I think. And his HR totals were inflated in Toronto.
Rasmus might be a good hitter, but he’s not going to be up before Sept.
Start Ludwick vs righties (maybe this will work)
The more I think about it...
it really is a power issue.
Look at tonight -they got 6 hits and 8 walks. But only 2 runs. Why? Well, you could say lack of timely hitting, but Kennedy had a timely hit, sort of.
The real problem is no one is hitting any extra base hits. If you get 6 singles plus 8 walks, unless you string them all together in an inning, you are only goiong to score a few runs at most.
Start Ludwick vs righties (maybe this will work)
You can't say Glaus doesn't have HR power
after 3 weeks into the season. He’s hit 3 balls off the top of the wall already this season and is just now finding his swing.

the all time home run king who put up close to a .500 OBP last year could be had for the league min to play one of the least important defensive positions!
[I’m just getting redundant now, but he’s (that devil of a man, him) the key piece to take this from a rebuilding/semi-relevant to a team to compete day in and day out, offensively wise.]
Well who the hell can see forever?
You do realize that if in the morning PD there was a headline

who is a serious option to close?
if izzy is actually not going to be able to do it
would you be willing
to trust a one run lead against a serious offense with reyes though
I'd trust McClellan before Reyes right now
and I’d call up Motte or Worrell (4:1 and 3:1 K:BB right now, respectively) for when Izzy hits the DL.
It should take 1-2 more blown saves before the Cardinals admit that something isn’t right though so I’m not holding my breath.
are you saying

given the frustrating nature of this loss, i think the community’s taking things pretty well in stride.
They ain't that young
Arizona is a young team. The Cardinals are middle of the road.

exactly
this wasn’t just a loss—it has all the indications of persistent problems beyond just a single nights loss.
i agree
but venting alittle makes tough loses easier for some

So Santa Glaus's wish list has grown
we need:
1. A power bat to hit 4th or 5th
2. A closer (Izzy is just too shakey)
3. A SS that can hit (although Ryan might be that gift)
4. A new hitting coach (Sorry Hal but I think we need someone else)
5. For Santa himself to hit with runners on base.
We've needed a new hitting coach for 3 years
he’s like Isiah Thomas, you just can’t fire him for some reason. All signs point to the guy not particularly helping ANYONE get better offensively yet he holds down his job, wearing that ballcap right out of the box and all.

pitching coaches dont really
make people have better plate discipline, that seems to be more on personal growth
disagree 187.9%
i’ve hated on McCrae plenty, and i’m 99% sure this walk rate isn’t his doing, but even joe morgan doesn’t recommend that you fire the hittin’ coach because your boys are getting on base too much.
And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...
I'd argue that it would be equally unwise to fire your
pitching coach if he is actually helping your hitters have better plate discipline.

hardcore, what about Luddy?
and chris duncan? j-rod? brendan ryan? brian barton? even ankiel for a little while . . . . . all these guys have hit better than expected in the big leagues.
you can’t blame mcrae for failing to make aaron miles and jason larue into good hitters . . . .
McRae doesn't seem to help any of them stay out of prolonged slumps
ludwick and ankiel were both called up because they were mashing the ball at memphis. Now, of course that is AAA pitching and both of these guys were ‘minor league veterans’ but was there really that much of a difference in there plate approach between the two levels?
I’d indict mcrae for the simple fact that he can’t keep Molina in the same stance for 6 months at a time and his stance is so altered now that he’s developed a ‘hitch’ in his swing like he’s adam kennedy.

Agreed
I like Hal, he is somewhat of a Missouri baseball legend (more on the Western part of the state) but I think it’s time for someone else.
For example…Eddie Murray is a Hall of Famer and one of the greatest hitters ever and the Dodgers fired him last year as the hitting coach because the team just wasn’t scoring runs and leaving tons on men on base. Same thing going on here.
So is the NL central officially
the worst group of closers collectively pretty much ever. that all used to be good
mother of
a$$
i can’t believe they lost that game.
i missed all of the last 5 innings & the post game, so is IZZY hurt again?
and what is up with Santa Glaus eyes?

?????
just read what happen! cant beleive. im glad i missed it.
I am the only/last Anthony Reyes fan!
the Dodgers are feeling our pain
they were leading 7-6 in the bottom of the 9th when Sito walked one & allowed a double to left.
on the double to left, Nomar appeared to blow out his left hammy going for the ball, which was a shot to the right of him. the Dodgers don’t have a back up 3rd baseman, so Martin had to come out from behind the plate, and our old friend Wild Turkey had to come in from the bullpen & catch.
on the first pitch from Sito, Wild Turkey missed the low fast ball allowing the runner from 3rd to score & tie the game.
they got out of it without allowing the go ahead runner to score, so its all tied up @ 7.
on a side note, i’d kill for the Cards to have a guy behind the mic like Vin Scully. the dude is flat out awesome. the best there ever was to call a game who wasn’t named Jack Buck.

Did they cut Delwyn Young
I would imagine he would have to be a better option at 3B than risking injury to Martin.

Vin said
they sent him down 2 days ago because they felt they needed 12 pitchers.
i forgot to mention that Jones left early in the game as well after hitting a ball off his foot.
so they lost their CF & 3rd baseman.
still tied @ 7 in the bottom of the 11th.

I'm pretty sure Young is out of options
and looking at the box-score, he batted in the 7th inning.

you and I
might be the only ones in MLB-dome still awake.
(I’m sure everyone left dodger stadium hours ago…)
And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...
FINALLY
Martin with a sac fly to right with the sacs full.
Dodgers win 8-7 in 13.
Sleepy, there was actually a good crowd left. guess the surf was too rough tonight.
good night, err, good morning every body.
