Game 24 Open Thread: April 25, 2008

Houston @ St. Louis

Chacon Looper
0-0, 2.77 3-1, 5.49

roy oswalt has an era of 6.00, and the houston closer has an era of 8.18 . . . . yet the astros are only 1 game under .500. they come in on a 5-game winning streak, swinging very hot bats --- 41 runs in those 5 games (vs 20 runs allowed). on sunday they'll send brandon backe (self-professed disliker of albert pujols) to the mound . . . . . tonight's houston starter, chacon, has been very consistent --- 4 outings, 4 quality starts, 4 no-decisions.

Scottie's back for Toronto

He’s supposed to be in the line-up tonight against KC.

by BTown Birds fan on Apr 25, 2008 7:13 PM EDT   0 recs

Yeah...

after going 0 for 9 in the FSL on rehab… It pains me to see such a great player decline like this. I guess that’ll always be part of the game.

by guayzimi on Apr 25, 2008 7:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, I hope that 0-9 doesn't mean too much

He was pretty jokey about it, for what that’s worth. And at least it was a freak injury, and not related to his chronic shoulder problems. Hopefully he’ll come out strong (well, maybe when they’re done playing the Royals; KC needs a break).

by BTown Birds fan on Apr 25, 2008 7:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Seriously -

the only category he leads the league in any more is “freak injuries”

by Urban Pawnee on Apr 26, 2008 12:02 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I wonder if they'll get this one in, or at least if there won't be a long delay.

Some thunderstorms are just getting to the U City area, and they’re supposed to be pretty strong, potentially with high winds and hail. It’s a thin line but it’s not moving very fast.

by BTown Birds fan on Apr 25, 2008 7:17 PM EDT   0 recs

Beat me to it by a minute! I was wondering earlier if they would get the game in. I feel better about it now. That band has to pass through eventually – at least I hope it does.

by Merry CRasmus on Apr 25, 2008 7:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Think it's going to get delayed a bit

Thunderstorm warning until 6:30 for the area. But the good news seems to be that it should pass through pretty quick. Just from one amateur eye looking at the radar. It’s nasty right now though.

by Merry CRasmus on Apr 25, 2008 7:18 PM EDT   0 recs

pujols vs backe

will be fun to watch.

Hasn't started raining here yet.

I’ve been as big of a support of Izturis as there is. (read; we got what we paid for.) But I most say. It is nice to see Ryan SS on the line up card.

by Evilfrog on Apr 25, 2008 7:31 PM EDT   0 recs

I'm with you, evilfrog ...

I was against Cesar during ST, when I thought someone might be listening, because I thought is was obvious the guy sucked … I tried not to completely dump on him once the season started, because I don’t like overly bad-mouthing our own players … but now that there’s a viable alternative … it’s bye-bye Izturis … keep start’in the kid … however, like I’ve always said, I think Izturis has a valid role on the team as a back-up player, until a trade of some kind is made …

1380 was just talking about Brendan Ryan ...

how he put on a show during batting practice today … was hitting them out to Big Mac land … everyone was surprised … he was showing more power than Albert … wouldn’t it be nice to see that spill over to a game … imagine that … a HR from SS …

mlb.tv is pretty craptastic too so far. same reasons you said, plus the 1.2 MB feed doesn’t work for me because my computer is new. yes, MICROSOFT windows vista has a compatibility issue with MICROSOFT silverlight. apparently if i was using windows xp all would be good.

that’s what the mlb.tv 1-866 guy told me, anyway. he didn’t really seem to know what he was talking about. he said something about buying a silverlight upgrade, and when i, of course, protested paying anything more for this, he told me about a new beta version of silverlight. which i downloaded. and i still don’t get the 1.2 mb feed….........

sounds like a pain in the ass. i’m not buying xp. hopefully they fix it soon.

seriously, why should i have to downgrade my operating system? or am i missing something?

bummer ...

we opted for Extra Innings over MLB.tv so that we could watch games on our big screen … MLB.tv is cheaper though … I really miss having unlimited access to FSN Midwest … I’m stuck in Dallas …

also, i’m paying 5.99 a month for dish networks sports package, which includes all of the fsn channels. except for when anything but a braves game is on. i get pre-game and post-game, but no game. i’ve been meaning to cancel it but my month hasn’t ended yet…
i’ve noticed mlb.tv blacks out cincinnati games for me, although they’re also blacked out on my satellite. so there’s 15 games i’ll miss. 9 of which are in august/september.

Jocketty Comments

What do folks think about “They were not surprised when Jocketty spoke at Wednesday’s press conference of a “vendetta” against his former employer.” in the PD? Walt never struck me as the vengeful type. I guess the whole thing with Lundhow was really serious.

I don't know that it is really true, so I hate to comment on it ...

however, Jocketty was an employee … his employer decided to let him go … Walt needs to get over it … we now compete against each other … he should try to out-do us, and we now have to out-do him … competition is good … alledged ‘vendettas’ are bad … may the best organization win … 100+ years of experience says it will be us …

(as long as "vendetta"...

...isn’t interpreted as “trade Brandon Phillips ‘aramiz ramirez-style’ to Chicago”. guess there’s a lot of ways he can hurt us without actually beating us on the field.

Not that I think he’d do it intentionally, but I’m not convinced he can outsmart Hendry anymore, and Phillips doesn’t exactly fit the definition of “scrappy” second basemen.
