Game 21 overflow thread II
better lucky than good, eh? it's 8 to 8, and the cards have 2 on and 2 out in the top of the 9th. . . . . as in every other inning in this stupid game. they have stranded 13 men so far today. what's the franchise record for a 9-inning game?

worst roster management this year
This is what happens when TLR burns through his outfielders left and right. Ridiculous.
I don't know if it's the franchise record,
but there was a game in 1994 where they left 14 RISP.

You are seeing the evolution of Ankiel out of the 4th slot at least. When you need a single against a pitcher in that much trouble, with only a change up left, you don’t throw your right hand, open your shoulder. pull your chin out…...dreaming of baseball tonight coverage….......

13 pitchers on the roster?
Seems to me that carrying only 12 position players is why we find ourselves in this predicament today. (Sorry if this has already been covered.)
Already used the wagonmaker for a pinch-hit sac fly. Looper pinch hitting now.
Maybe we’ll see Ankiel as a reliever today. :-)

A lot of pitchers
with a history of not going deep into games is what caused this.

hadn't thought about it that way
Still, 13 of ‘em? I remember when the debate was whether to carry 10 (5 SPs, 5 RPs) or 11 (6 RPs) was the debate. It wasn’t that long ago.

after 12 innings, it’s hard to pinpoint just one thing… Runners on base, missed calls, bench management, an injury…
Value of a Steal
Kinda fits in with the discussion on the value of a steal. In this game, it was the ballgame.
I don’t know if Gross had more than a 75% chance of succeeding, but it sure looks like the right move.

So...
I didn’t get the chance to watch the game today as I am at a training seminar. But did it appear that Thompson may have made a case for being the pitcher to be sent down when Ryan is activated off of the DL. One would assume it is a competition amongst Reyes, Thompson, and McClellan. Reyes has not given Tony and Dunc Reason as of yet to leave and McClellan is being used in a manner which would imply he is here to stay for a bit. I’m not saying that Thompson has pitched poorly but is giving up four runs in an inning when brought into to get the hold enough cause in this case to send him down. The bench needs ryan to come home.
Yeah
you don’t wish anyone physical pain but a trip to the DL for Izturis wouldn’t be the worst thing for this team right now.

I don't know bout that
Is Brendan Ryan coming back? Not that Brendan Ryan is going to be a game changer, yeah I think his offense shoudl be better than Iz but I think Iz is better on the defensive side
I'm still waiting for Izturis 'great defense' to show up
he’s made some slightly difficult plays but his range is either poor or he is out of position alot. He seems also out of position on all relays from the OF.

Iz
I think some of being out of position is learning how well certain guys throw. I remember one relay where he and kennedy were just too close together, which happens from time to time.
Iz’s D has been 10x better than Eck already. He has made throws from the hole that Eck had no chance making already.
I just don’t think Brendan Ryan is going to be that good, yes he may provide a bit better offense but it’s not like he is a guy who is going to have any shot at hitting 7HR this year.
The Cards just do not have a potent middle infield at all. Brendan Ryan is just a cheaper version of what the Cards already have. He has more speed but it’s not like we are getting some superstar back. I see so many comments about him and I think it will be nice to have him back but it’s not like he is great.
It's not very hard for Ryan to be an improvement offensively
and I don’t think Izturis glove is winning us too many games.
We’ve left 49 men on base vs the Brewers so far this year. We need all the offense we can get.

I think Izturis is still valuable ...
as a back-up SS to Ryan … so I’m glad he’s not going to be completely DL’d … I’d rather have him spelling Brendan than Miles … a defensive substitution at times, if Brendan proves as ‘young’ and ‘erratic’ as Tony claims …
I wish no ill to Cesar, hate to see anyone get hurt, and hope he recovers well; but, I’m very glad Ryan is being called up and certainly look forward to the increased offensive production … Izturis was agonizingly painful to watch at bat … Ryan will be no automatic out …

LaRussa has to get over his fear of playing Barton
for longer than 6 innings. It has cost us two wins vs the Brewers, running out of legit bench options.
The game has a way of finding you if you try to cheat it. LaRussa makes the bench thin, it catches up to him.

I really don't understand the hesitation with Barton
He hasn’t had any more obvious miscues than players like Ludwick or Duncan but routinely gets pulled early in games. I’ve noticed comments in game threads that Barton isn’t a good defender but I haven’t noticed that at all.
Whatever the case, La Russa can’t afford to coddle Barton for a full season. It’s time to see if he can play 9 innings.
He can't be worse than Shumaker has looked at times out there
Shu has let balls roll up his shoulder and to the wall, taken bad routes to balls in the gap and for some reason, someone has him playing almost in CF when in LF.
If memory serves right, Barton has as many OF assists as Shu too.

Gabe Gross just traded to the Rays
Scores winning run and then gets traded after the game.

should have sent then Schu
when they were interested earlier in the year.
There's probably several teams interested in Skip right now.
and if we get rid of him, who bats leadoff?

pretty much anyone
“leadoff hitter” is not a position. Good lineups are built based on putting the best available players in them and then sorting as necessary. Bad lineups are built by putting people in the lineup based on which “lineup spot” they can fill. The goal is to score runs and having as many high-OPS players in the lineup as possible is the way you do that.
It’s completely asinine to sit a guy whose ops is almost 500 points higher than another guy because the other guy fits some pre-conceived notion of what a “leadoff hitter” is. If skip wants a starting job on an MLB team, he can take grounders at second like every other 5’ 10” 175lb player.
And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...
i should have rephrased that last sentence
it sounds like I’m “anti-skip”, which I’m not. He’s one of my favorite players. he’s just not one of our 4 or maybe even 5 best outfielders.
And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...
I'm going to disagree slightly
Every position in the lineup is different and leadoff is probably the most unique. Last year SKippy had no clue how to work a count. How many times did we see him go up there and roll over on the first pitch? It’s clear that he really worked on the leadoff role this off-season and in SP and it’s showing. He’s drawing walks and really working the count. You can’t just throw anyone in the leadoff role and expect them to succeed. There’s a mental aspect to leading off the game too.
Barton, while he has all the intangibles of hitting leadoff (makes contact, has speed), has he ever hit leadoff before? I’m not being confrontational, I’m simply asking because I do not know.
And as for your last sentence, I would love Skip to be our 2nd baseman!

Its skip vs duncan and lud.
Those are your 3 corner OF vs RH pitching. Its pretty clear which 2 of those 3 are the best hitters.
Very true
but it makes sense to ride out this hot streak of his as long as possible. Other options include trading him while his value is high or moving him to 2B.
I honestly believe we could see Skip at 2B before this season is over.

I agree
At SS or 2B his bat would be good, in the corner OF its not. The corner OF and 1B is where you but the lumbering players with the big bats. If you can find CF or MIF that can hit, you are way ahead of the game. On the other hand a sub 800 OPS out of the corners is not acceptable.
FWIW
Brendan Ryan not in the lineup for the S-Cards tonight. Could it be that he’s catching a flight to Pittsburgh?
I doubt it’s a scheduled off-day because has one the other day (sat I believe.. could be wrong)

Strauss has reported
That he is on a plane. And Izturis is hurt. So he should be in the line up tomorrow.
Why I wont vote Obama(not a political statement hang in there)
