Game 20 Open Thread: April 21, 2008

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers, Apr 21, 2008 8:05 PM EDT

Wainwright Villanueva
2-1, 2.78 1-2, 6.19

through three starts this year, wainwright has gone to 3-ball counts on only 12 batters --- half of them in the last 3 innings of his most recent start vs these same brewers. he threw 115 pitches in that game, a figure he's topped only twice in his career.

Disagree

With the players TLR has in the starting lineup, Waino should be batting 6th, maybe even 5th.

I think if he ever completely loses his command, we could probably convert him into an outfielder, what do you think?

by FunkeeC on Apr 21, 2008 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions

No Iz2 apologist, but...

As long as he’s taking walks, he’s at least giving some value to this team. His defense is pretty steady and he gets to balls that Eckstein never would have. He’s rarely a threat for extra bases, so there’s really no reason he should be a free swinger. He has taken his walks so far this season, and because of that, his OBP (entering tonight’s game) is sitting at .344, which is excellent out of the 9-hole. As I mentioned, since his XBH are so rare, his BA is of no consequence in regards to his OBP.

by from First to Third on Apr 21, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Well if he doesnt start hitting

no one will walk him, and his OBP will head down to his career norms. At which point he will be useless with Ryan around.

by FunkeeC on Apr 21, 2008 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

if he can take walks

and hit .250, that is true. but he isn’t hitting well enough for the “taking walks” caveat to take effect. he’s also not really taking that many walks any more; his OBA is only .227 in the last 7 games, 2 walks in his last 24 PA or so.

Damn....Cubs

are looking pretty good, I was dogging them so far this season because they kept playing the Pirates, but they are looking to be a hell of an offensive team, I hate to say it.

by KYCards on Apr 21, 2008 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

You do know

that they had a 5 run 8th that was started off with an error don’t you, and 3 pf those 5 runs were a bomb off of jorge sosa (possibly only man izturis could go deep off of)?

I agree though, it appears to be a very good team. But it’s the cubs, they always find a way to screw it up. I’m not worried.
