Musial Missing Homer Project

In best Dr Nick voice:  "Hi Everybody!"

Just read this in the StL P-D: http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/bird-land/bird-land/2008/04/the-search-for-the-mans-lost-homer/

Basically, to summarize - Stan hit one in '48 in a rainout that didn't count.  He would have won the Triple Crown that year.  Goold is looking for verification of it so that it can go here: http://www.retrosheet.org/losthr.htm

From Goold's blog:    "It’s been about six months since I spent time digging into the past looking for the information, and the trail has gone cold. But it shouldn’t. So, I’m asking for help. Join the Musial Lost Homer Project. Email me suggestions or clues at dgoold@post-dispatch.com. There’s got to be somebody out there who heard the game, scored the game, can help find the exact date, identify the pitcher and lead us in the direction of getting Musial’s 40th home run on the Retrosheet list.

The purpose is not to rewrite history, just to log a lost homer — for context."

So let's help find it...this is the Cardinal site on the web, and we all know Cardinal fans all over the country.  Wouldn't it be nice if we did something for "Baseball's Perfect Warrior, Baseball's Perfect Knight"?

I'm headed to the stacks tomorrow

I believe ours has microfilms of the New York Times going back that far. I'll take a look to see if maybe the boxscore showed up for the rainout, or atleast a story.

I just paid $20.00 for the August 3rd, 4th and 5th

editions of the Times and nothing was mentioned except that a make-up game was going to be played the next day.

Thanks

you exceeded expectations in dropping some coin. I've sent emails to the older folks I know.

It's a Kevin Bacon game world - we're only 6 people from finding it! :)

After spending a couple hours on the microfilms

all I was able to find was that the Giants probable starting pitcher for the August 3, 1948 8:30 game that was rained out was Sheldon Jones. Whether Durocher actually started him with the rain coming, I don't know.

The Cardinals starter was Red Munger.

Another avenue would be to contact Cooperstown, the Giants or the Cardinals and ask what happens to the Official Scorer's scorecard after the game. Were they kept in an archive by the team for potential disputes? Were they sent to Cooperstown?

Also, the announcers for WMCA and WTOR should have both had scorecards of their own (it was on TV and Radio that night, I checked).

I just realized no one will ever see this

because it is burried 15 diaries deep just 1 day later.

I didn't even see this post

It was buried so fast, and was interested in helping sort this out.
