San Francisco Giants @ St. Louis Cardinals

Cain Wellemeyer
0-1, 3.24 1-0, 4.00

espn.com doesn't often have a worthwhile article, but there's an amusing one up there today which asks: are the giants the worst hitting team of the last 50 years? and if they're not, who is?

they are definitely worst in the nl to date: last in scoring, last in obp, 14th in slugging, 15th in homers. they are 1st in SBs, however.

Kip Wells

Maybe I missed it elsewhere, but did you guys see Baron von Kippington pull off the W in the 22-inning marathon last night in San Diego?

His line:
4 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K, HBP, 53 pitches
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=280417125

I found it interesting that 4 non-starters had 3 or more IP in relief. Kipper was the only starter out of those 4. Ledezma for the Padres had 5 IP on 80 pitches. He is a former starter though: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7086

Does anyone know if the start time has officially been pushed back? or are they just playing it by ear?

Did you know? TLR no sugar

Just to point out how dubious I am of FSN’s Do You Know yesterday, LaRussa is a big fan of wine and unless I remember incorrectly, wine is very high in sugar content, no?

I think it depends on the wine

Dry reds have very little or none; some of the stuff you can get from wineries around here has a lot.

I'm just various dubious of the statement

that the man has no sugar in his diet.

by Hardcore Legend on Apr 18, 2008 7:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

guess it depends

on what you define as suger? refined sugars? artificial sugars? Yes technically cards would count as sugars at some level as well. I’ll just take away from it that he tries to eat healthy.

by FunkeeC on Apr 18, 2008 7:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

carbs not cards

haha one could debate whether he eats cards or not.

Nutritionists correct me

But isn’t any starch/carbohydrate broken down into sugar anyway basically?

With no evidence to the contrary, Colby Rasmus is clutch

by joker24 on Apr 18, 2008 7:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yes

which is why i made the point that it could be the type of sugars being referred to. I’m sure natural occuring sugars are in everyone’s diet. It probably is a good idea to avoid the refined ones (high fructose corn syrup anyone?)

by FunkeeC on Apr 18, 2008 8:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm with you

He’s probably talking about sucrose (table sugar) and HFCS as well, since that’s how the ingredients are listed on food labels.

All starches/sugars are turned into blood glucose.

It’s silly to complain about the Cardinals record, but they should have won last night’s game (if not for Skippy) and one of the SF games they lost

you can’t hang yesterday’s loss on Skip … he made every effort to get that ball … they were playing to pull, and he blooped it on the line … it happens … he might not have got the best jump; but, when Fielder is up, who breaks IN on the first step? ... it was just bad luck … just like it was good luck when Dunc got that bloop single to win a game recently … just like when Albert just happened to catch that line drive to bail out Izzy’s arse the other day … luck is part of baseball … please get off Skip’s case …

It was a smart out

Runners on 2nd and 3rd, none out. A deep fly gets the runner from 3rd in, but doesn’t necessarily get the runner from 2nd to 3rd. A grounder to 2nd, however, moves both runners up one. You definitely can’t say he was doing that on purpose, but it was probably the most productive out he could have made.

The official scorer ruled it a sac.

Something that I’m wary of is the prospect of a speedy runner advancing to 3rd on sac bunts to try to draw throws across the diamond from el Hombre.

Sometimes I think they just go with what should of happened on the play not exactly how it happens. Tradition says a guy bunts with a runner on first it has to be a sacrifice. That or else they just want to help out players Batting Average

Just did a little figgerin'

Suppose we blow this game tonight (don’t want to jinx it)

If we play .500 ball the rest of the way, we’d end up with 83 or 84 wins.

The composite VEB community projection was 78. We’re off to a good start.

not at all what i said

think they are better but I dont expect them to win the WS…im not setting them up to fail. I have more of a wait and see approach..

I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

I see it

and thought this team would be much better than expected before the season.

I imagine there’s something to what he’s saying though, that the average fan comes to the park expecting to see a win since the home record is so good.

yes thanks liam thats what i meant

if u heard the comments from the game live…what i was reating too…i dont expect the team to dominate every night or win every night…but i have hope, and enjoy watching them they are a fun team to watch

I'm beginning to thnk that Frankenstein's control problems

are generated by situations where he’s avoiding throwing strikes/painting the corners. He had Lewis at 0-2, and then none of the three balls were close.

comebacker to wellemeyer

he was still in his pitching motion. Ball bounces off of his back, and rolls along long enough for the run to score and lewis to reach first

Just looked it up, base-stealers are 6/8 off Molina this year.

My theory: he’s using the Fezzik strategy of making them think they’re doing well, because he hates to see a basestealer caught disappointed.

Once again

The argument could be made for any combination of the three, as they’re all hitting right now. I love Brian Barton so far, but when the guys TLR puts out there do what they’ve been doing, you can’t complain too much when he’s not in the lineup.

before his two strikeouts, he was .308/.386/.308

that isn’t something that’s going to continue. if you have zero power in your bat pitchers will just groove you fastballs. he’s just not much of a hitter anymore.
