Around SBN: Phillies Coast Past Brewers, Face L.A. In NLCS Bar-right-arrows

K-Mac

Kyle McClellan was nails yesterday preserving a tie game after Franklin, Flores and the Cardinal defense did their best to hand the Brewers the lead.  He came in with 2 men on and struck out Joe Dillon with three straight breaking balls.  McClellan doesn't throw terribly hard for a reliever (his fastball rests in the low 90s and will touch 94) but he features an impressive array of breaking pitches AND has excellent command of them.  He can come in and throw any of his 4 pitches for a strike at virtually any time.

After following him last season in the minors, I didn't really get they enthusiasm for him despite the impressive stats at AA.  After having watched him for a few weeks now, I'm beginning to understand.  What's kind of amazing is that McClellan hasn't even thrown a changeup yet this season despite the fact that it's probably an average pitch at worst.  It's certainly his 4th best offering after the fastball, curveball and slider but it's by no means a complete dud.  Part of me wonders if the Cardinals will be tempted to stretch him out as a starter next spring but I'm getting ahead of myself.

The first step if for the Cardinals to not burn him out this season.  He's made an appearance every other day for 11 days now (6 appearances) pitching more than an inning 3 of those appearances.  The pen is a little weak at the moment with Springer out and Franklin showing his true colors but I hope TLR can find a little more rest for his newest reliever.  McClellan has been in only 1 low leverage situation so it's not like Tony is calling him in for fun but Kyle has already hadTommy John surgery in 2005 and I'd question the efficacy of a usage patter that has him on pace for 90 innings over the course of the season.

But yesterday, for those three breaking pitches to Joe Dillon, it was all the Kyle McClellan show.

- - - - - - - - - -

When the Cardinals faced the Giants earlier this season they hit .275/.353/.470 during those 4 games.  They had 16 walks and 30 strikeouts.  That's an excellent line for a team to post.  (For reference, last year the Cardinals hit .274/.337/.405 during the season.)  They split the series as you'll recall scoring 21 runs over 4 games.  The Giants as a team hit .304/.347/.478 against the Cardinals during that series so it's easy to see why they split the series.

How they managed to hit that well when their number 4 hitter is a Molina and their best hitter is Aaron Rowand . . . even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.

The one thing that the Giants do have is a couple of top notch pitchers and some young hurlers who have a great deal of potential still.  We won't have the good fortune of seeing the $126M punching bag this series but we also won't be facing Correia again who baffled us in the first game of that series.  I'm doing my best to sound optimistic here but the downside is if you aren't facing Zito and Correia then you are facing Cain, Lincecum and Jonathan Sanchez (a youngster with impressive stuff and poor command).

Tonight the Cardinals will be taking on Cain who had a no-no through 6 last time against them but was denied a win.  He's simply a damn good pitcher who doesn't even have much of a platoon split.  He's held righties to a .633 OPS over the last 3 years (2005-2007) and lefties have only faired a marginal 46 points better.  Cain features three pitches (fastball, slider, changeup) which gives you a good idea of what each batter will see.  Righties get fastballs and sliders.  Lefties get fastballs and changeups.

In a redux of 6 days ago, Todd Wellemeyer will once again be opposing Cain on the mound.  That's a tall order but Wellemeyer has been up to the call thus far this season.  Here's a crazy number for you; thus far this season, Wellemeyer has held righties to a .598 OPS but lefties have crushed him to the tune of 1.049.  The reason could be that he's seemingly ditched his changeup.  He's throwing it about half as often as he did in previous seasons when he was mostly a reliever.  Please Todd, if you've still got that changeup handy, try it out.  What you've been doing thus far has not worked against lefties.

That's your match-up for the night.  Enjoy your Friday and GO CARDINALS!

In case you missed it,

Here’s Marty Brennaman’s take on Cubs fans. If you can’t tell, this was said during and after the bleacher bums littered the field with baseballs during wednesday nights game.

"that is so typical of Chicago Cubs fans"

that has to be one of the funniest things i have ever heard

that is awesome

Marty calls ‘em like he sees them – and he’s not a homer, he’ll call out his own players ahead of the other teams. “They still are the Chicago Cubs, and they will figure out a way to screw this thing up.”

BTW, he does a great job w/ the White Sox now. It’s hard to believe he’s a former player (Cy Young winner), and not a trained voice.

Speaking of being in enemy territory...

Someone on BCB posted “Cubs fan here watching the game from Cardinal territory”

The reply came “You’re watching the game from a makeshift meth lab in your bathroom?”

Stinging, but funny. We can take ‘em as well as dish ‘em out.

As a Cards fan in Chicago

the majority of my friends are Cubs fans, including my girlfriend (i know, i know). Cubs fans get a rap as being extreme assholes. For the most part, it is the bleacher bums who are responsible for this bad rap. A large majority of them are more interested in getting completely obliterated and yelling obscenities at the opposing team’s outfielders than spending a good day at the ballpark.

Anyone who’s ever sat in the bleachers wearing Cardinal Red would agree that’s the “Friendly Confines” are not so friendly.

"part of you wonders"

Why do you wonder? Didn’t Duncan, upon seeing McClellan this spring, “immediately move him from reliever to starter?” The line in the Post Dispatch (I damn near wrote Globe Democrat) was something like that.

I’ve noticed a few posts implying that people have forgotten this. We had a preponderance of starters this year and he’s a newbie, so I can see why he came north as a reliever.

by sdrone on Apr 18, 2008 9:12 AM EDT   0 recs

For what it's worth...

Tony likes the idea of taking an almost-ready minor league starter and giving him a year in the big-league bullpen, and then putting the guy in the rotation the following year (see: Wainwright, Adam.) One can argue whether that’s a good idea or not, but K-Mac has certainly been effective so far!

There will be roster questions when (if) t’other starters return from the DL, but I suspect K-Mac may stick with the big club the entire year…

franklin

“showing his true colors”... i don’t understand where you’re getting that. the only thing that i see in his stats that wasn’t a continuation of last season’s solid effort is the K/BB… but the sample is so small that it’s not really that great an indicator anyway. he’s still been extremely tough to hit for right handed batters.

that said, i don’t think i’ve seen any of the games when he’s pitched, so i’m probably not telling the whole story. have there been location problems? hard hit balls that found gloves? just trying to figure out what brought on that statement.

go cards, o's, and phillies.

...boiler up.

by moboiler on Apr 18, 2008 9:12 AM EDT   0 recs

Franklin's control last season was off the charts

He walked just 3.5% of the batters he saw—something he’d never even come close to doing previously. Add in that his BABIP was a bit low and his strand rate was probably a bit high. Beyond that, he hasn’t looked sharp in any of the 4 or 5 outings I’ve seen him pitch this season. He hangs some breaking balls and misses spots and lacks the pure movement or velocity to do that without getting destroyed.

He’s miscast as a setup man, imo, and is just an average middle reliever.

by azruavatar on Apr 18, 2008 11:30 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i wouldn't say he's an "average" middle reliever

when i hear that term i think of replacement-level guys like jason simontacchi or cliff politte, and franklin is quite a bit better than that… but you are right, probably we have better options to set up isringhausen. perhaps mcclellan can inherit the role.

go cards, o's, and phillies.

...boiler up.

by moboiler on Apr 18, 2008 11:59 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Not saying you don't know this,

but there’s a distinction between “average” and “replacement level”. Not to put words in AZ’s mouth, but I’m guessing when he says “average middle reliever”, he means league-average, which is not the same as replacement level.

Franklin would have been a great opportunity for the Cards to sell high, or at least walk away from a good thing before it disappoints. The fact that they didn’t raises questions about what they expected from Franklin and the system they use to value their players. Ditto for a player like Aaron Miles or Kelvin Jimenez (the valuation part, not the sell-high part).

First Pitch Tickets

The best deal is still the “First Pitch” tickets. You get there early, wait in a long line, and its a lottery as to where you sit, but the tickets are usually pretty good. And there only $11 a pair (you have to buy a pair though).

Just had an aftershock

A few minutes before posting this, I felt an aftershock. It rattled the windows in my south st. louis home (work from home). The one in the early morning hours was stronger and lasted longer. And although only 7 at the time, I have a distinct memory of the 1968 quake that was bigger than the one today. I believe the 1968 quake must have had an epicenter closer to St. Louis because I recall hearing a bang on the roofing timbers on our house as it hit (more violent than what I felt this morning).

There's a cool USGS web page where you can track them

The one overnight was a 5.2, and the one half an hour ago was a 4.5. There have apparently been four so far today right in that same area in SE Illinois, but two were very small. I think you can also look at some historical earthquake info at this page too.

Flores and our LOOGY

To his defense, I don’t see how Flores did his best to “hand” the lead over – did you see the pitch Fielder hit and the “gold gloved” fielding effort of Schumaker? Flores pitched it right where Yadi wanted it, Fielder made slight contact and Schu lost it. Then Tony had him pitch an IBB. If anything Schu’s name should be in that list.

That said, I think we have to reevaluate our LH relief. There has been some debate on here about Villone and our need for another/different LOOGY. Flores did worse against lefties than righties last year and so far this has continued.

There is some reason to put caution in these results. When Flores faces RH batters they stink – that’s why Tony keeps him in (no stats on this, my impression). In constrast, Tony brings Flores into situations like yesterday where Flores has to get their key lefty. Plus, last year he didn’t have TJ or someone else to share his duties. I doubt this is a huge factor though, Flores may still have been poorer against LHBs. And it’s clear TJ needs to come back soon or we need another LHP relief option.

by enoscountry on Apr 18, 2008 10:01 AM EDT   0 recs

really?

Schu isn’t a gold glover, but he made a nice effort considering the distance he had to cover. they were shading Fielder to pull quite a bit. he dove, and it hit the tip of his glove.

I'd rather my sister be a prostitute than my brother a Cub fan.

by _pistol_ on Apr 18, 2008 10:10 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

he lost it

he stops/stalls and then sees he misjudged it and tries to recover.

I’m not dogging on Schu as much as others did yesterday on the gamethread, it was a tough play, but I don’t think you can blame Flores any more than Schu.

by enoscountry on Apr 18, 2008 10:20 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree

Can’t blame the pitcher on a bloop signal when he hit his mark. Skippy should have caught it. But he didn’t. Don’t worry folks. He’ll miss another one sometime this year!

by eglasier on Apr 18, 2008 10:30 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Skip; Ankiel; Duncan, Ludwick; Barton; Edmonds; Hunter; Etc… At some point they are all going to let a bloop signal drop that is going to score ar un(s) and effect the out come of the game.

it wasn't flores alone

I indicted the defense too.

When I saw Flores in his first outing of the season, his slider looked like it did 2 years ago with tremendous bite and good location. That’s degraded back to the 2007 slider in the last few weeks, which isn’t really a slider at all but some slurvy slop. I’m not sure what to make of him yet.

by azruavatar on Apr 18, 2008 11:33 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Skip didn't lose it...

I was at the game and that play happened right in front of our seats (dugout box). the OF was shading Fielder to pull, Skip saw it and was running b@lls out all the way – dove and it tipped off the end of his glove. Incredible hustle, all the way, and gave it his all. Schu’s name should definitely NOT be on that list. Fielder just got away with a opposite field Texas-leaguer bloop, that’s all.

by A1R3Z on Apr 18, 2008 1:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That's how I saw it also ...

I didn’t see a bad break on the ball, and he couldn’t have hustled more … Fielder just got lucky on a bloop single … hit where they ain’t … get over it …

I'm not diss'n the effort

but many noted that if Barton had stayed in the game he might have gotten there, despite the way they had it played. Plus, Schu doesn’t take a straight path he runs in and then runs to the line (clip). I

Sun and all I’m not saying he’s at fault – I just didn’t think the call out on Flores was fair.

by enoscountry on Apr 18, 2008 2:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Also, it's not whether Barton would have gotten to the ball or not

but rather, would Skip have gotten a hit in the 10th where Miles, Izturis and Rico failed? Tony needlessly burned through his bench.

KMac last night

http://www.fangraphs.com/livewins.aspx?gameid=280417124
So I was looking at the FanGraph from yesterday’s game, KMac had the second highest total WPA and the highest pitcher only WPA of the game with .235, meaning he gained us 23.5% chance to win. Loshe gained .213 on the mound and .072 (second to ludwick) at the plate.

If you look at the list, the main duds of the game were of course Flores and Thompson (Franklin actually gained a bit in chance to win) but also Rico, Iz2, Ankiel and Duncan.

I know WPA doesn’t take into account fielding, so Skip’s missed ball might be a factor but really, why don’t we hear more ragging on us only scoring 3 runs? I think our biggest loss was at the plate not on the mound.

went 4 for 6 yesterday with a HR. Isn’t he eligible to come off the DL whenever the team deems fit? After watching Rico miss pitches badly and having Glaus/Izturis struggle to hit the ball out of the infield, you’d think he’d be activated today.

WPA is % chance to win, BRAA is % chance to score a run at that moment, you won’t get much WPA for a 2 out grand slam if your team is already up by 5 but you would still get decent BRAA

As a team we seem to avoid throwing changeups.

Not sure why. K-Mac would just be one of several that can throw the pitch but doesn’t for whatever reason.

Personally I wish more of our starters threw one since its far easier on the arm than the slider/cutter the team seems to love.

A slider can be an arm killer, correct?

A changeup or cut fastball shouldn’t be any more stressful than a straight fastball.

changeup shouldn't be any different than a fastball

unless you throw it like the one that (was it Reyes?) did the other day where he tried to make his whole body go in super slow motion and your arm is all out of wack.

Still looking for 1985 Regular Season games on DVD/VHS
