Game 16 overflow thread

am i the only one who thinks schumaker got fooled on fielder's pop-up? he wasn't running that hard, as if he thought he was gonna run under the ball, but it drifted on him. . . . . .

tie game, 3-3, brewers still threatening.

I think it’s great we still get to face Gagne.

We’ve dominated the Brewers the last two days. These games should have never been in question.

Gameday Question

I just noticed today that MLB Gameday has a little blue play button by certain plays, where you can click to watch highlights from the game. That’s pretty damn sweet, I have to say.

Does anyone know if this is new, promotional only, or only for certain games, or what? I think it’s great added value to my Gameday subscription, and I hope they keep it up throughout the year.

by blehmann on Apr 17, 2008 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

The highlights started this year but I don’t think you need a subscription for it.

Tough loss....

18 baserunners, just 3 runs, and no runs produced by our non-pitchers after the 2nd inning….

yet just a hair away (Skip’s non-catch) from a win.

At the very least this game should make Tony think twice about unnecessarily burning a bench player as a defensive sub relatively early in a tight game…. we lose Barton’s bat and are left depending on Miles, Washington and Izturis at the end..

Still, Birds in 1st through 16 games, haven’t lost a series.

I’ll take it.

Why the “hate”?

I read really nasty comments directed at at least 5 cardinals players during this game thread….

Miles is Miles… we all know what he can do, and he does his best, and occasionally he delivers some incredibly big hits (2006 anyone?).

But Miles is not a great hitter, and when his spot comes up in the lineup it’s up to him to try his best to do what needs to get done… Miles is not typically a pitch-taker, and if he thinks a first-pitch fastball is coming and he’s gonna take a rip at it, then what the hell. It’s a game.

by salvomania on Apr 17, 2008 5:02 PM EDT reply actions

I had an exciting afternoon. Didn 't get to go to the game,

But a teacher I work with as an aide had great seats for today’s game, and she just felt she couldn’t ask for the day off because she just missed time while her daughter had surgery, and she didn’t want to lie and say she was sick because the seats were behind home plate, and even if she was willing to lie, she was afraid she might be seen on TV by someone from school. Her husband went with a friend in her place.

Her students were at P.E., so I hooked her up with the gameday site….she didn’t know about it before…..liked the details, didn’t like the slowness. I, of course, had to leave the room. I have too much stuff to do everywhere in the building. But it was my good deed for the day…..

As far as Prince Fielder hitting a game winning homer, well, you knew it was going to happen. Too bad it happened to us. Don’t be too hard on Thompson…every pitcher alive has had that happen to them. And the Cardinals had a chance to pull it out, and didn’t.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on Apr 17, 2008 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

I fully respect what Thompson has done. Just that he’s been conditioning as a starter. Spent the entire spring battling, and finally winning the spot. Didn’t pitch himself out of it, and adding in all of that, I don’t know how well he’s going to go back to the ‘pen.

That’s two times he hasn’t had the greatest of control. I feel bad for him more than anything

Fielder HR

The pitch didn’t look that bad to me. It was low, but didn’t quite drop out of the zone. And it moved from outside to directly over the plate.

The problem was that Fielder was right on top of it, and reached down with kind of an uppercut swing (a la Edmonds?) to mash it.

How about Luddy?

He’s slugging higher that el Hombre right now. Pretty good start from him. Skip obviously looks good too.

We could use some more production from Glaus obviously, and we the Izturis/Kennedy pairing is holding us back offensively. Unfortunately, there’s just no easy answer to this problem.

Currently, Ryan is our only hope for fixing this situation, but he’s just that. A hope.

That said, this is a fairly specific problem. I thought our problems would be much more widespread. They’re not, and that’s why we’re 11-4 and not 4-11.

So says, Titus Pullo (formerly The Dude)

by Titus Pullo on Apr 17, 2008 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

Luddy looks really good. Hope the Giants can give Rick some momentum on making contact.

I wouldn’t write Kennedy off just yet, over the past week he’s batting over .370, 7 hits and a walk or two. Which I believe includes a couple of games against two very good pitchers of the Giants and a “contending for division” staff.

Izturis has regressed some on his OBP though and is 2-12 in this series after having a reasonable series against the Giants.

That pairing, while not impressive is at least saving runs defensively thus far. I haven’t tracked stats, but this whole series against the Brew. Iz has had nothing but a boatload of balls sprayed his way.

I’m actually hoping that Ryan comes in and helps Glaus and Iz as needed.

That once dire 7th hole is starting to firm up offensively. 8-15 and two walks this week.

1. Lack of timely hitting in key situations with men on base … Lohse was the only one who could get a big hit when we needed it … I don’t know about you, but I had a bad feeling in the 7th when we were only winning 3-0 after all of the opportunities we had …

2. Tony’s lineup … I agreed with who he had on his card; however, there’s no way Glaus should be in the clean up slot the way he’s hitting at the moment, when you have Ludwick available hitting the way he’s hitting at the moment … A basic tenant of lineup creation is to create it in OPS order … you want your highest producers earlier in the card, adjusted for the heaviest in the 3 and 4 slots … coming into today’s game, Glaus has an OPS of 0.654 … Ludwick’s coming in was 1.210 … there is NO WAY in my mind you can justify batting that OPS in front of Ludwick … Ludwick’s is much higher now of course after his big day … If he had batted 4th, he would have been up in at least two critical situations with RISP (may have been 3) ... and the game result would be very different … I suspect Tony is just trying to show respect for Glaus and get him going … but, batting him 5th is not that big a deal … he should hit there until he earns the right to be 4th … and his OPS certainly doesn’t earn it … Tony needs to pay attention to the 101 rules of line-up creation …

3. Bad luck … Fielder’s bloop hit was just dumb luck … it was a great pitch, and Schumaker did everything he could to catch it … it just dropped in … it happens …

Oh well … a tough one to lose … great start by Lohse wasted … FIGS of 65 is tied for fourth best of the year … interesting fact: in 2007, there were only 19 games with FIGS results of 66 or higher … and only one of those came in April … in 2008 there have been 3 already in April, and 5 of 65 or better … the pitching is WAY improved … and this team is for real …

File this one under ‘you can’t win them all’ ... we’ll be back rooting tomorrow … kick some SF arse …

Wasted start by Lohse

But I think the whole team is still in high spirits. I did think that it was weird for TLR to bat Glaus in cleanup over Ludwick though. I think he was using his usual player psychology to try and get him out of his slump. Then again, maybe he’s not making the league transition in hitting NL pitching.

By OPS, Duncan is the worst-hitting outfielder

He also has an OPS of .869 and is 7th on the team (5th in the outfield!). If we can get that kind of production from the outfield all season, that would be outstanding.

FWIW, Wainwright and Pujols are the only non-OF in the top 7 in OPS.
