brian barton apparently gets the start today vs the left-hander, despite schumaker's recent hot streak. that's a sensible move --- schumaker has a very pronounced batting split. he has almost no power vs left-hander pitchers --- an ISO of just .054 against them last year at triple A, and .000 in his big-league career. that's right --- he has never had an extra-base hit off an LHP in 42 big-league at-bats.
brewers blogger jeff sackmann has an article up today at The Hardball Times about the effect of batting the pitcher 8th.

Load up with righties
against the lefthander… makes sense to me!
Let’s hope the Brew Crew continues their trend of not hitting righthanders! (Why, yes, I am greedy!)

Hardtimes
Taking a quick look at the hard times article and of course Iz jumps out. I know he’s running small data to that effect, but I’m almost curious if he batted in the 7th spot and have Kennedy (last nights line up) in the 9th.
You still get speed, they both have similar OBP, but Iz’s numbers seem to be better in that slot. (before pitcher, since 8th means something entirely different for us)
Just a roaming thought.

ironically Iz and Kendall are both in that article. And they’re both 9 slot players.

That article surprised me. I would have expected a spike in walks in front of the pitcher.

anyone think that if lohse somehow stays solid this year
we have a shot to keep him, you know, the whole stl is a great place to play, stl discount kinda thing?

I'd like to see the Cardinals
offer an extension here shortly. If he keeps this up (not the 1.00 era but keeps pitching well) his value will rise and with his agent, he may ask for a lot.

I don't know if I'd offer it too soon ...
His spike in results may be tied to pithching for a lucrative contract … let’s keep that edge working for us … but I would offer him a contract … I think he’s a keeper … and, I wouldn’t be too insistent on a home town discount … if he’s earned it, he’s earned it …

the way we watch our payroll sometimes, either way if he keeps it even close to this for the season i will give him a cheer where ever he goes

Doubt it
If he keeps up a pretty solid year, we should let him walk. Historically, he hasn’t been that great of a pitcher. If he tears it up for us this year, or even has a above-average year, he will be looking for a 4/$40 or even more like he was this offseason. I’d say thanks for the season, good luck, and see ya.

Miguel Tejada's *True* Age
Turns out that Tejada is a little older than he led on. It’s heartening to think that the ‘Stros gave away half of their farm system for a soon-to-be 34 year old SS.

I Guess I'm One of the Few...
who don’t feel like this is as big a deal as some may think. Miggy’s playing well and, truly, is it that surprising to hear domincan players signing outside the last decade weren’t truthful? I find it more strange that teams didn’t do any research since all of his documentation listed him as having been born in 1974 yet Major League Baseball was clueless.

It's a big deal
Because someone of his age, even with an alleged history of PED use, is much more likely to see a rapid, drastic drop in production and mobility on defense (not that Tejada is all that mobile now, anyway). It’s not surprising at all as lying about one’s age seems to be common when trying to break free from the cycle of poverty many aspiring Latin American ballplayers find themselves in. It is bad business for teams not to do a better job of researching this, if not initially that before making a FA signing or a trade.

and you can tell it is mental. For those unable to watch, after that DP, he started banging his hands again his helmet in frustration.

I agree
I hate to be cliche but he’s really pressing right now. The last few games he’s fouled off good pitches - yanked them really hard but really foul - and he is visibly upset with himself.

I'm starting to think
we have better options for a hitter behind Pujols…
zero HR from the guy makes pitchers not want to give Albert anything to hit..
by salvomania on Apr 17, 2008 1:28 PM EDT 0 recs
As it appears now...
Glaus isn’t that great of a 4 hitter. However, I think he is our best hitter to place behind Pujols by a wide margin. I’m confused though because the first month of the season is generally one of Glaus’ more productive, especially in terms of his power.

No way
Skip would have drawn a walk or something else to manufacture that run. Ludwick is just being a selfish bastard with these selfish homeruns. How selfish.

Exactly
Ludwick hits 3 homers in 3 games and LaRussa, in his infinite wisdom, puts him on the bench for 2 games. We need a stat for “ON-FIRE” so that doesn’t happen (imho).
Personally… current hot-ness is much more important than historical lefty/righty issues.
