you gotta wonder what's going thru his mind when he comes in in the 4th to relieve the guy who took his spot in the rotation....could just be tense....
He should really be starting
Him and Reyes both. But what do I know? I've never been scrappy. Certainly never gritty.

But if we need to make a big comeback I'd rather have him then a lot of guys who try to hit 5 run HRs.

Not only does Grit Miles come up to the bat, but he also plays SS. Thank goodness TLR recognizes his defensive limitations and doesn't play him there. Oh wait...

making a case for staying in the lineup, at least.....we could sure use some more power in this lineup....
We have a surplus of OF that can hit
And a craptastic middle IF. We really shoudl try Skip at 2B and see if he can at least play it as well as Miles.
Ankiel looks good
Don't get me wrong, but he hits for a lower AVG, but equal or higher power. I should have conditioned it better, perhaps with, "After this series."

I heard a story about miles
Supposedly there is this burning building, everyone gets out but an old lady's cat. From the alley TLR and #12 come out and TLR gives the sign to miles. The building starts to fall down, and singlehandedly miles rebuilds the buidling brick by brick and still catches the cat, true story, true story

Best part. THIS is grit:
The police escorted Ensberg and the others out of their room and down to the parking lot, and dug in for a standoff. For 25 minutes, the crook had a gun to Miles' head, until the 5-foot-8 infielder, the son of a heavyweight boxer, took matters into his own hands.
He attacked the 5-foot-11, 175-pound intruder, and during the struggle, Miles bit Williams on the forearm while Williams bit Miles fiercely on the upper back. Both had their hands on the gun, and eventually, with Miles lying on top of the burglar, a SWAT policeman who'd broken through a window had no choice but to fire six close-range gunshots.
"We're downstairs in the parking lot, and you hear this, pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop," Ensberg says. "And we're like, 'Aaron's dead.' " But the cop hadn't missed, wounding Williams once in the face and five times in the upper torso. The burglar was still alive, but some of his teeth had literally been shot out of his mouth. Miles bolted through the broken window and down to the parking lot, straight into the arms of his teammate Rose.

Bad decision by Bochy
Albert's career HR % -- 5.94%

...just a bit outside....
by Ankiels Missing Curveball on Apr 13, 2008 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, but...
realistically, Skippy's extra base hits are not hit very hard. What's the chance Pujols scores on one of his doubles?
And really, which would you have your pitcher face - the best hitter in baseball, or a AAAA player?
First -- there were 2 outs
it's possible I guess that one of those doubles might be a bloop double that would have held Pujols at third but, w/ 2 outs, he's running on contact and will score on a double 90% or more of the time.
As to your 2nd point, that's not the question. Of course, you'd rather face Skip Schumaker than Albert Pujols but it's not a fair comparison. You're facing Pujols w/ the tying run at the plate and Skip w/ the tying run on 1st base. There's a big difference. I'll also add that Skip is a better hitter than he was when he first came up so, if anything, I understated his likelihood of hitting an XBH. Pujols' numbers, on the other hand, are probably a very accurate measure of his likelihood to hit a homer as there's a bigger sample to work w/ and he's basically the same player he was last year or the year before.
As to The Birds' comment above about it "working out," that's results-oriented decision-making. It's not a good decision b/c it worked out. It's a bad decision regardless of what Skip did. We know he's going to fail more often than not. So will Albert. The percentages were better pitching to Albert, as scary as that may be, than in pitching to Skip.

whoops
meant to say: What did he say?
by davethebutcher on Apr 13, 2008 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions
What pushed me over the edge
Was talking about Eugenio Velez. "Can't we just call him 'Gene'? That would be a lot easier" "It's not like he would know if we called him 'Gene'"
I don't know
If I would call that racist, but it is definitely insensitive. Especially since baseball has given us some of the most fun names to yell.
by davethebutcher on Apr 13, 2008 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I've always liked him
He's low-key and generally knows what he's talking about.
What'd he say that was racist? He was one of the American players who made an effort to learn Spanish in his playing days, so that'd be more than a little surprising.
He said something earlier
That had me in the "He might be prejudiced" mind set, so I was probably more geared to interpret that as racism instead of ignorance. Either way, I don't like him.
That's a stupid comment.
You don't know anything about him. Whitey used to use Ricky as an interpreter for the hispanic players when he played for him. To say that he is racist is just flat stupid. Leave that crap at home.
He should have elaborated
on why he referred to him as a racist, but the comment was pretty darn close. See above.
Actually, I'm in the wrong
The comment was insensitive, at least, but I don't know the man, and I shouldn't have let my opinion of the comment or his job skills influence me in any way to make a comment on the man personally. I should have kept it off the boards, etp was right. My apologies to Mr. Horton.
by Midwestside on Apr 13, 2008 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions
nice apology
and fair enough. Maybe you should've said that the comment was a racist one rather than Horton is a racist. Still, I think etp's comment was over the top considering the circumstances and the discussion of Horton's comment does have a place here.
I appreciate the apology.
I don't believe that it is racist to say it is easier to call him Gene. I don't know him personally, but his history is clearly not that of a racist individual. I may have reacted harshly, but that is because I think that is too damning a characterization to allow it to be applied flippantly. Sorry. If you have more than one instance that indicates that that characterization is correct, then I am willing to listen. Until then, be careful what terms you throw around.
I apologize if it seemed as though I were censoring you, but the topic is more important than most that are discussed here. It is more necessary to provide factual based evidence when you are attacking a man's character, than when you are attacking his play on the field.
To houston, I don't believe my comment to be over the top given the circumstances. I did not attack Midwestside personally, nor did I indicate that I felt he shouldn't post in the future. I simply felt that he made an extremely inappropriate remark, and it was made too flippantly. He wasn't discussing Horton's comments, but instead editorializing on the man in general.
I agree w/ your last statement
and that, as I said above, his comments should've been about Horton's COMMENTS and not about Horton, himself. That said, calling the comments "racist" is justifiable considering what was said.
Actually,
the comments were not "racist" in that he was not talking talking about race in the least. As Midwest said above, you could term it "insensitive," or you could define it as ethnocentric. The fact that an individual speaks a different language has nothing to do with race. No one would identify making fun of a french or german name as "racist," as their respective races are still anglo-saxon in origin. At worst you could define it as "anglocist," implying that Horton shows favoritism toward english-speaking players and persons.
I know that's semantics, but in this case semantics are what the discussion is about. The choice of wording was the issue for both Horton, Midwest, and yourself.
An inexcusable gaff, on my part.
Obviously, I should have said "caucasian in origin," and not "anglo-saxon in origin." Inexcusable when making reference to correting semantics.
It also made me realize that the tone and tenor of my last response was unnecessary. It was condescending, and it added little to the discussion. I apologize for that. It sounds like we all agree that the statement may have been inappropriate, but that one statement should not be used to characterize a man. I absolutely agree that the validity and value of an individual statement made by a broadcaster should be up for debate and discussion.

Ole Grits and Gravy does it again!
I like how the ball stopped rolling 15-20 feet into the outfield.

This umpire is garbage
Two terrible strike 3 calls, and then he stares down Duncan as he walks away.

It is a great idea.
If this ump is going to have his head up his arse, then he should be questioned. Too soft a stance to take.

Oh well, a 4-3 road trip isn't awful...
although it's a bit unacceptable to lose 2 games to the Giants. I'm scared about facing the Brewers lineup though, since the freakin Giants put up quite a few runs on us.

Well...
It obviously wasn't our day. I hate losing, but we'll get 'em next time. We still finished with a winning record on the road trip and fought like hell through the bloops, bad umpiring and AAA lineup. I'm proud of 'em.

Umpiring across all of baseball has been terrible this year...
The umpires screwed the Phillies out of a win earlier today. Mark DeRosa hit a HR that was pretty obviously foul, and the umpires called it fair. The Phillies ended up losing by 1

Even though we got hosed by Dan Iossagna
It's hard to justify Pineiro's pitching and our batters' (lack of) hitting.
Also, Uncle Rico looked pretty blatantly overmatched out there today
his bat speed isn't major league caliber, he couldn't catch up to anything. Lets hope Brendan Ryan comes back soon.

At least we can feel warm inside
Knowing someone got something they didn't deserve, in this case, a major league start. That's how we know we're good people, when we give things to people who don't deserve them.
during the Giants post game
which is still on now, they are saying the home plate ump gave the Giants the win in the 9th. how bad were his calls against the Cards batters?
well the mojo didn't work two days in a row. i left again to eat & they still lost. oh well, you can't go 162-0 the boys get a much deserved day off tomorrow.
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
I think the issue
was that his strike zone seemed to change in the 9th...pitches that were balls earlier in the game became strikes in the 9th.

I disagree
the 3rd strike to Ludwick was borderline -- could've gone either way. The one to Duncan was, at least, 4 inches outside -- probably closer to 6.

Silver Lining
at least we have seen that the cardinals are not giving up late in games with large defecits. down 5 and 4 run late in the games today, we still battled and won one and had a chance at winning another.
It's nice to see that we are showing resilience, no matter the score or inning.
"Them Cubbies can kiss my ass" -Dizzy Dean
and
hits, risp, and while P' gave up a few runs, in all fairness he could have gotten out earler/tony could have pulled him sooner.
i'd much rather lose like this than game one of the series, and a hell of a lot more than tie in the top of the 9th just to allow a home run in the bottom half.
Brew crew worries me though

Ryan Ludwick
has an OPS of around 1.100 right now. Small sample sizes, I know this, but i'm starting to think Luddy may be starting to realize that potential that he was touted as having back when he was a prospect. I think he could put up an OPS of around .900 over a full season if given the chance.
...just a bit outside....
by Ankiels Missing Curveball on Apr 13, 2008 10:32 PM EDT reply actions
Ludwick...
has performed well over the first two weeks, but he has a career .783 career OPS in MLB (233 games), and an .846 OPS in the minor leagues (736 games) . I wouldn't set my sights on .900, but if he can repeat last season's .800+ I think he provides some real value to the club.
true, maybe .900 is a bit high...
but I do think he's capable of putting up 25-30 HR's and 80-90 RBI's in a season, if he were to hit 6th for us.
...just a bit outside....
by Ankiels Missing Curveball on Apr 13, 2008 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Obviously, that would be great...
I guess I just don't share the same optimism towards Ludwick. Like the guy. Decent player. I just think 15/65/.260 is more likely. And there is certainly value in that as well.
15 homeruns?
Maybe in very limited platooning, otherwise, I think the guy would easily hit 25+ over a full season. He put up the numbers you listed last season, and that was over 300 at bats.
...just a bit outside....
by Ankiels Missing Curveball on Apr 14, 2008 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions
He's hit more than 15 HR in a season
...three times at any level above A ball (and zero times in the majors). Over a nine year career. I think 25+ HRs from him would be a monster season...that no one saw coming.
and i'm saying he hit 14 last year in 300 at bats
...just a bit outside....
by Ankiels Missing Curveball on Apr 14, 2008 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions
he'll get playing time as well, with duncs ability to have niggling injuries, platooning, and day offs for the other out feilders there's a reasonable chance he'll have every chance to get some time in, even if he's not starting
by AdjustedExpectations on Apr 13, 2008 11:46 PM EDT reply actions
Right...but,
it still seems unrealistic to think that Ludwick can post a .900 OPS given all the opportunity in the world. OF's with .900+ OPSs have names like Holliday, Granderson, Ordonez and Vlad the Impaler.
900+ is a bit high
But I don't think 25 homers is. Like someone said, he basically got half a season last year and hit 15...and I've liked him at the plate so far. Career stats say no. Last year's stats say yes. My eyes say yes. I guess I put more stock in the latter two in Ludwick's case.
