this team reminds of the 04-05 juggernauts in that they never seem to be out of a game. I'm not saying they're nearly that good, but:

1) Carp still hasn't pitched yet
2) the kids are hitting
3) the kids are pitching too
4) Pujols has gotten red hot

OTOH we've been playing iffy teams so far....we blew out a lot of bad teams in 07 but got consistently clobbered by winning teams. But still.

Pretty dang good.

Way to go A-Rey! You earned it. The first time this year to get out of an inning with runners on. That was key.

Great to see Duncan snap out of it. We'll probably see Barton tomorrow in Schumaker's place.

sounds reasonable to me...

Ankiel is Jesus!

by Cards Fan in Chitown on Apr 12, 2008 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

No he got out of an inning in Houston stranding a runner at 3rd.

That's 2 times in a row. This time the game was on the line. Last time he kept the score tied.

I have told you all forever he's a much better pitcher than he's shown. And last year doesn't necessarily have much to do with this year. Maybe you all will believe me now.

Me and the Deadspin guy believe in Reyes.

I'm sure Mr. Duncan will find something wrong with today's performance. He got his results. with a little Izzy 'tude. And that's clutch.....no matter how you look at.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on Apr 12, 2008 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

He has a different game plan this year.

He stopped throwing that pitch that kept getting jacked with RISP last year. You know, that pitch that Duncan said he had to throw to have success at this level.

Instead he went back to the one he was comfortable throwing. The one Duncan thinks cannot get MLB hitters out.

So far Reyes & Mo > Duncan

by DriverZn on Apr 12, 2008 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

My bad.

Thanks for the correction. I'm still reserving judgement with optimism. I would like to see him come in with runners on a time or two. I see it as a journey for him. If he can use this experience as a spring board the way Wainwright did, I think he can finally turn the corner.

by etp_stl on Apr 12, 2008 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, indeed. Small sample size. But good looking sample size, no?

And the dude has been filling up the zone with strikes-even the outing he wasn't as sharp, he still threw strikes. That's a big turn around from last year. And he did that all spring too.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on Apr 12, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

he's being more consistent

but i get tired of the wow he stuck it to dunc..If they really hated A rey that bad hed be gone. differences in opinion sure...They are all cards and all on the same team..I hope after every performance that goes well this year its not WAY TO SHOW EM...instead just nice job..

He hasnt been handled right, but last i checked he did get the opportunity to save it today so is that them not giving him a chance?

Oh and izzys mentorship going well..way to strand the tying run whew..

I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

by punchinjudy on Apr 12, 2008 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

That's us. Don't you know that part of the reason I really like

Anthony Reyes is because he never says anything about anything? He doesn't complain, he doesn't blame anyone. He has never said a word about what they wanted him to do or not do. Whatever he has said to management about his situation was surely not told to anyone in the press by him. It's why he's my favorite on the team and the one I want the most to do well.

But yeah, some of us were upset (I was) that LaRussa and Duncan wanted him demoted at the end of spring training-apparently to be punished for still being here, or something. Because I think most everyone agrees that his spring was pretty good, and that he is a better pitcher going forward than Jimenez is.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on Apr 12, 2008 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

good point

and i realize A Rey hasnt said anything iwas refering to the board abotu the stick it to em..Once or twice ya thats fine, but everytime he succeds? The ST issue was junk and you're right Jimenez is bleck at this point...

There are always two sides, and tonight he did well, but they put him in with the save chance when they didnt have to. He's still around cause someone wants him there, now who excatly is an issue of debate.

I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

by punchinjudy on Apr 12, 2008 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I'll be glad when Reyes having a good outing is no longer noteworthy, and not just commonplace but also not worth wasting keyboard strokes on.

That being said: I like him in this role. He seems to be adjusting and doing well. Good on him.

Well who the hell can see forever?

by Alxfritz on Apr 12, 2008 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with the first part, in total.

I do have a question for you, though. Did you foresee Mr. Reyes making a quick adjustment to being a reliever? I did not. I still am hoping to see him in a typical relief appearance with one out and guys in scoring position. I am cleaarly rooting for him to succeed. I personally think that the bullpen is going to be an extremely good experience for him. I think it is a way for him to get confidence at the major league level while working through some of his past deficiencies. I haven't had an opportunity to actually watch him pitch this year, but I was encouraged by his offseason work on his mechanics and his return to his previous approach.

by etp_stl on Apr 12, 2008 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I for one did not see him adjusting quickly

just because of his see-saw majors history. So far in 08 it's been far more positive with a rey than neg.

I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

by punchinjudy on Apr 12, 2008 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't think he would adjust quickly. But I do happen to think he

learned a lot from his miserable last year, and he himself is determined to not have a repeat performance. There will be some bumps along the way, there is for every pitcher every year. One advantage in the pen is that he'll have to figure out right away what's going to work one batter at a time. But he has to be kept at ML level. He has never had a problem getting batters out in the minor league since his first short season.

I believe he's positioned for a breakout, and I'm pleased that Mr. LaRussa is giving him a chance. Because if he can turn around things from last year, he's a bonafide major league pitcher. You know, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.........

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on Apr 12, 2008 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Its a combination of things

Last year there was a very stong debate here. Basically people fell into 3 groups.

1: Reyes suckes and should be off the team
2: Duncan screwed up Reyes's mechanics and was responsible for his failure
3: Reyes was once promising but for some reason just flamed out like many other prospects.

Jill, I and a few others were strongly in the #2 group. So yes, when reyes talks abotu re-discovering what he used to do (pre duncan) and now suddenly looks good again, we are going to celebrate.

I have issues with Duncan trying to make every pitcher a clone. You work with their strengths, not force them to use their worst pitches just because you think thats what you are susposed to do.

by DriverZn on Apr 13, 2008 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I fall strongly into camp #2, as well.

I think that is pretty evident by my comments on the subject. Duncan is what he is, and he's not going to change. The question I have is, why would the club even bother with pitchers that don't fit his profile? If Anthony was clearly a flyball pitcher, why did they tout him as their best prospect?

I believe, as I've seen jillsinmo say many times, Reyes' best bet is going to be with another organization. I think the Cards could use him, but the current regime will not. So I, like you, will continue to cheer for his every good outting. With any luck, someone with a less rigid coaching style will see the kid's talent and decide to give us a solid MIF prospect in return for him.

by etp_stl on Apr 13, 2008 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Um, New York Mets anyone? He would slot in perfectly in their rotation.

Right now. Who is Mr. Wright blocking? Who is Mr. J. Reyes blocking? Aaron Heilman anyone? Mike Pelfrey throws a sinking fastball.........

I can imagine Rick Peterson salivating at the chance to get his hands on a right handed Oliver Perez.........

Atlanta, anyone? Glavine and Smoltz are old; Juerjjens is young; James is back in the minors-he has not recovered well from his injured shoulder. Hudson seems like the only sure bet going forward. Brent Lillibridge? Kelly Johnson? Some higher ceiling prospect from A?

It's a bad situation. And yeah, I'm in the #2 camp. I don't think Mr. Duncan ever believed in Reyes. That's why he was told to change. ...and when he couldn't they took it as wouldn't-which leaves you with a player that doesn't trust his coach and a coach that doesn't trust his player. Thus, whatever #23 does, there is still something he didn't do right...

Wow, I said I wouldn't post about it anymore.........does this make me a liar, or just weak?

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on Apr 13, 2008 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Ah, I goaded you into it.

It's not your fault. As I said, I don't really think it makes sense to blame Duncan in that everyone knows who he is and what he wants as a coach. I don't understand the reasoning behind supplying him with a pitcher that can't fit his desired profile. Jockety should have known better, and maybe Mr. Luhnow, as well. (Potential reason for the rift?). As I stated before the season, it was interesting how Duncan and Dyar Millar got into it over Reyes. It seems like Reyes did everything he could, and it wasn't good enough.

by etp_stl on Apr 13, 2008 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

You did goad me.......

But....it is also Mr. Duncan's responsiblilty to get the best out of the players the organization provides him-even if they are not quite what he prefers. And maybe, just maybe, there are folks in the organization that WANT that starting rotation diversified.

Realize too that he fell into their lap, 15th round, injured, bonus too small to even be listed, and that at one time a lot of folks thought we got the steal of the 2003 draft-which still holds in some respect-he's the only 15 th rounder that year that's even made the majors. They should have quietly traded him for something they wanted. I hope they learned they should NEVER let out a word that they consider a player less than desireable.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on Apr 13, 2008 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for the background.

I didn't know all of his draft history. It does make you wonder whose call it was not to trade him after the '06 World Series. It seems like we could have gotten something for him back then. Your point about Duncan not running him down publicly is well taken. The man seems to have a considerable amount of respect in the league, similar to Mazzone; so if he publicly says he doesn't think he is currently a major league pitcher, it carries some weight. That is a serious mistake.

It's the pitcher who threw the half inning before their team took the lead. You probably already know it, but wins and saves are not awarded on merit, they're totally arbitrary. Well, unless the starter goes less than 5, but even then, he could be the most deserving, but the win has to be awarded to someone else. The rules don't make any sense.

i will never follow the Cards on Gameday again. every time i do, bad things happen.

big props to DUNK & Anthony. keep on keeping on boys.

I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!

Just got home from the game

And that was a great one! I didn't think last night could be topped, but wow.

Some of you

should be ashamed of yourselves. If you don't know what I'm talking about go back to the first game thread.

Great win!

site changes

with the site changes im surprised there is still no ie logo in my favs. I mentioned it before the changes and am not smart enough to make one myself. It's not vital, but it'd be neat.
