Game 12 overflow thread
5-2 giants through 7 and a half . . . . . . looks like tony left wellemeyer in there a few batters too long. another good outing by the kid though; i'm starting to believe.

what a load of crap
for Welly....changing that drop to a hit is a killer
It's a defensible move
That catch would have been a web gem if Skip had made it.

God damn it...
I was late with that call.
the other thread jammed up and made me want to throw my computer through the window.

It was frustrating
But now LB has graced us with an overflow threat upon which we can chronicle the forthcoming Redbird Rally

barton has 15 career at-bats --- is that the regular basis you mean?
Brian Barton would have hit two home runs today

I regret nothing
I still hate first pitch swinging, as a rule. Of course, good hitters only swing at the first pitch if it's too good to pass up. So we're back to nowhere.
first-pitch swinging can be a good thing
if you're smart about it. or so says the data ---
http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/2005/08/let_er_rip_1.php
My point a while ago was...
not swinging at the first pitch, in general. I was talking specifically about swinging at the first pitch of a new reliever that just came in to the game. The odds are that he hasn't settled in, yet. I think you do him a favor by swinging. Interesting data, on the whole.
it depends on a lot of factors
including the pitcher, the game situation, etc etc. in an RBI spot like that, i think you go up there looking for a pitch in a certain zone. if you get the pitch you're looking for, why take it and fall behind in the count 0-1? don't you help the pitcher that way?
look at the giants pitcher. heh.

this is the drama we wanted
and possibly the game
I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2
The SF bullpen
really makes all their young starters worthless.
Maybe Cain's QS bad luck will continue.
That might have been the best pitch Ank's gonna see

i think cards fans were not intended to see this game, and i am willing to sacrifice watching it if it means the baseball gods let the team win today. so far, so good boys!

Fox went to a 10-1 game. Real compelling tv there.

On the Cards Radio Broadcasts
Why do Mike and John switch off inning to inning? I've heard one of them chime in sometimes during the others inning, so are they there but silent? Or do they usually get up and move around, and just come back and comment when they feel like it?
Mike is 68 years old.
He's 68 and doesn't do full games anymore, but he does the 1st and 9th and some innings in between. I think it's also a sign of respect, since Rooney is a lead guy too and can handle himself well in the booth.

"You say the world has lost it's love. I say embrace what it's made of" - Dar Williams
Ludwick and Ankiel
only 2 over .096, which is Pujols. They have .328 and .249, respectively. Well, Franklin has .110 as well. Cain has .287 as a pitcher, and .189 as a hitter, both leading the team.
MLBtv and Fox

the scorekeeper incompetence
seems to be a running joke amongst the fans at AT&T. The guy who does it is apparently really, really bad, prone to changing his mind, and just flat out terrible. In two games out of three that I went to, a person I sat next to knew the scorers name and volunteered that "dude" is awful, which was absurd to me; I have no idea who the scorekeeper is at Busch. but they knew the scorekeepers name at AT&T. kind of reminds me of Angel Hernandez; if the fans, even the psycho ones like us, know your name as an umpire or scorer, you aren't a good one. One of the guys was an awesome fellow (with cerebral palsy) who has season tickets and comes every day, so he doesn't count cuz you'd expect him to know, but the other one was a regular dude who goes to 4-5 games a year.
It definitely hurt welley and especially piniero today, and should definitely be kept in mind in the future, especially for things like Cy Young consideration for guys like lincecum and Cain. i will never again trust any ER or unearned run stat from that park, until they replace the dude who was scoring this weekend.
And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...

If Tony had replaced Duncan
with Barton, Izzy wouldn't be up until the 2d spot. Would they ever pitch him a second inning?
The time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is me
I actually kind of don't get why he wasn't a defensive sub in the 9th

If you've got a defense-first backup catcher, it doesn't make too much sense to d-sub for 'im.

even if they don't have a broadcast team in SF
somebody has a camera crew and for a game this intense you'd think they could just have Zelasko and whatshisname with the mustache talk about it at the studio....even without any commentary it'd be infinitely better than watching the tarp....and I suspect there are some bored Yanks and Sox fans who might agree with me on that point....

It's funny
The media talks about how no one wants Bonds, but when anyone plays the Giants, they're so happy he's not there anymore. The guy should be playing right now, in a fair world.
Well, here's your chance to gain Tony's trust
"You say the world has lost it's love. I say embrace what it's made of" - Dar Williams
he actually hit 96 once
on the stadium gun, and 95 2 or 3 times. it might be inflated- it had lincecum at 99 several times in the 5th and 6th today- but if it wasn't, A-REy in the bullpen makes a whole lot of sense. he looked really, really good, even on the double he gave up which was basically an excuse-me swing.
And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...

nothing
if he's talking about the double, there was no way anyone catches that ball. Willy mays in RF doesn't catch it. it was about 5 feet from the line and hit softly, no height at all, and luddy was shading to center.
And I awoke in California, far far from Spancilhill...

2/3rd's of the earth is covered by water, the other third is coverd by Jim Edmonds....when he's healthy...
FOX/ESPN ect.
If it's not Yankees, Red Sox, or Mets they don't care. It's sad that just a couple of teams in baseball dominates all the coverage.
Boycott their games.
Don't watch any of the games with big market teams. Watch any games they put on that don't involve any of the big market teams. Convince all of your friends to join in. It will help skew the ratings data. As long as we continue to watch the Yankees and Red Sox, we continue to give them reason to believe they should put the games on. I won't watch either of those teams play. I don't hate either team, but I am extremely tired of their overexposure.
espn radio on xm
had this going fri...michelle tafoya thinks there is a bias and eric k. doesnt...buster olney came on and said there was...but due to they spend the most money...he also said clevland was the best unmentioned story of the last few years.

by punchinjudy on Apr 12, 2008 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Thanks for the info.
I have listened to Eric K. a lot on Mike and Mike. He tends to live in his own little world. He is an unabashed Red Sox fan (fine, good for him), and he is not being objective. Olney is partially right, and we all need to realize that the 20s, 30s, and 50s Yankees developed a following that other teams simply can't match. Although, the Cards and the Tigers were very close when radio was king. The expansion of the league has diluted some of the old followings from the south and midwest for the Cards, and St. Louis is NOT a major media market. We don't have the corporate dollars, and unless the city actively courts corporations to move back into the area, we never will. This hurts your national TV exposure.
I would say both Cleveland and Detroit have been great recent stories. I think Minnesota was a great story, and the LA/Anaheim/California Angels. I think the Arizona DBacks and the Colorado Rockies from last year were great stories. Hell, what the Rays are doing down in Tampa is kind of compelling. I'm a baseball fan, and I like to see teams developing talent and winning. I'm glad baseball is doing well enough that the trade deadline and hot stove league are no longer about what the Yankees/Red Sox want while the rest of the teams scrounge for the table scraps.
FOX/ESPN will continue to go where the ratings are. If we contribute to the ratings of the Red Sox and Yankees games, then that will reinforce their assertion that those are the games the nation wants to see. I don't even think the Yankees are a good team this year. Why the hell would I watch them?
Dang it....
I left for the 9th and 10th and missed my prediction coming true with my man Ludwick!!! (well sorta, should have won it there).
GO LUDWICK....he should be an everyday starter like Ankiel.
