Game 12 overflow thread
5-2 giants through 7 and a half . . . . . . looks like tony left wellemeyer in there a few batters too long. another good outing by the kid though; i'm starting to believe.

It's a defensible move
That catch would have been a web gem if Skip had made it.

I regret nothing
I still hate first pitch swinging, as a rule. Of course, good hitters only swing at the first pitch if it's too good to pass up. So we're back to nowhere.

first-pitch swinging can be a good thing
if you're smart about it. or so says the data ---

My point a while ago was...
not swinging at the first pitch, in general. I was talking specifically about swinging at the first pitch of a new reliever that just came in to the game. The odds are that he hasn't settled in, yet. I think you do him a favor by swinging. Interesting data, on the whole.

it depends on a lot of factors
including the pitcher, the game situation, etc etc. in an RBI spot like that, i think you go up there looking for a pitch in a certain zone. if you get the pitch you're looking for, why take it and fall behind in the count 0-1? don't you help the pitcher that way?

THIS IS BECAUSE OF MY SACRIFICE
it was 1-0 when I tuned in on mlb.tv (i'm in nyc). it immediately went to 5-0. i turned off mlb.tv. now we're doing better.
i think cards fans were not intended to see this game, and i am willing to sacrifice watching it if it means the baseball gods let the team win today. so far, so good boys!

I assume you're in France from your screenname? I'm in Ireland right now, and as much as I love it, I also can't wait to get back to the States to watch some baseball. Haven't watched a game since August...and as I'm writing this, Ludwick just hit his home run...oh yeah!

Wellemeyer is off the hook. Now how do you think Matt Cain is feeling about now? He pitched a heck of a game. I guess he's used to it by now.
