Anyone care to speculate . . .

. . .on how much better the team would be with Ryan/Hoff at second, Raz/Mather in the outfiled and Kenendy and Duncan anywhere else?  In the last Houston game Shannon speculated that "Kennedy's back."  He is in fact back to back with 07's wretchedness.

Clearly the team is moving forward on other fronts.  Card kudos for unloading the undead - Rolen, Edmonds, Speez, but why in the name of Baseball Heaven (or whatever this year's dopey motto) do you cling to the deadly duo of Ken Dunc?  .

It is incomprehensible to see the team continually compound last year's blunders when there are vialble options now.

Like so many other people have said in other fan posts,

we're only 10 friggin games into the MLB season, and something like 7 for MiLB! And Ryan isn't playing because he's on the DL.

You can't be so low on Kennedy/Dunc after 7 games for Duncan and Kennedy. If they get 40 or 50 games into the season, that's a completely different story, but for the time being, just be patient.

Also, if you think Duncan and Kennedy are so wretched (albeit they have only played 7 games apiece), then who will be willing to take on Kennedy's salary and Duncan's K's? Honestly, I don't think Mo could get a bag of balls for either if they continue their poor hitting (after 7 games!)

Let Duncan retake his picture!

also...

we didn't really unload spezio. had it not been for his little run in with the law, he would probably be on the roster right now

bitter?

maybe i'm misunderstand, but your comment seems long on angst and short on rational argument (short, not absent). i'd love to see ryan at 2nd, but he's hurt. so i don't think it's fair to dub kennedy's playing time as "incomprehensible." hopefully ryan plays well enough to force tony's hand (and that he stops acting like he just ate 14 pixie stix just before gametime). i'd love to know what hoffpauir and his obp can do, but he's had about 200 at bats at AAA. if we're sending rasmus down for grooming, i think it's at least above "incomprehensible" to let hoff work a little more.

as for the outfield, we've got a glut of potential and no sure things. mather and rasmus are young, have no mlb experience and options. i think that also moves the front office's decision beyond "incomprehensible." duncan could be a middle of the lineup force, a solid obp/power threat in the 2 spot or a one hit wonder. i'd like to find out.

hey chris duncan

don't let the apparent majority opinion of us el birdos posters discourage you. i for one value your combination of obp and power. sure you have your faults, but i look forward to the thirty + homers a healthy you can provide, even as part of a rotating cast of talented outfielders, each of which is an asset to this cardinals team. no need to press just because you're underappreciated, and in some cases inexplicably hated. good luck.

Agreed

Chris Duncan is an ugly player, always seeming to look like he's about to teeter over and fall down. Nonetheless, he has prodigious power and takes walks. I don't know that you can complain about the results.

I am not concerned so much about Chris Duncan's bat coming around.

I'm concerned about the nagging injuries he's had, and continues to have. It's hard to get in a groove when he has to take time out to battle injuries. The best thing that can happen for him is to get healthy and stay healthy. I think it all falls into place if that happens.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on Apr 11, 2008 9:35 PM EDT   0 recs

Agree...

That is indeed the number one concern with Duncan, the bat will follow the getting healthy etc. His defense could also improve, maybe not in leaps and bounds, but it will improve. Can't ever fault him on desire.

What are you talking about?

We're going to be better off with unproven young kids instead of proven veterens?

It's obvious that you're actually Tony LaRussa, lurking on VEB and posting as someone else.

OK.

We continue to hear this kind of blather, and I blame fantasy baseball enthusiasts. Let's look at some rational items on the topic.

Chris Duncan:

A below average fielder with a power bat. He has shown ability to provide a team with an OPS that will FAR outweigh the damage his defense will do. In a perfect world, he is probably an AL 1B/DH, given his limited defensive skills. He has a wild swing that will make him susceptible to the SO, but he has shown good plate discipline highlighted by 5 BBs to 2 SOs so far this season. This is at a time when he is in a slump. He has also shown an ability to provide above average base running skills, but he has shown a proclivity for injury. The question is will injuries ruin a promising career as a No. 5/6 hitter in the majors, or will he put it together to become the major piece in a deadline deal for a top flight IF prospect.

Adam Kennedy:

An average defender with limited offensive skills. His playing time relies on his ability to get on-base while providing solid, if not spectacular, defense a 2B. He was signed to provide solid, consistent production at 2B. He was not predicted to be a cornerstone either offensively or defensively. So far, he has not lived up to his billing, and the real determination is to decide if last year was the beginning of a consistent decline.

Neither of these questions can be answered after 7 F'IN GAMES. Duncan is not costing us anything. His slump has provided the plethora of young OFs an opportunity to show what they can do at the major league level. He has shown good plate discipline, and I firmly believe that when his injuries subside he will be back to infuriating us all in LF. While Kennedy isn't making an exceptionally high salary, it is difficult to justify dumping a 3-year contract after 1-year. It would be better for the Cards if they could get at least half of this year out of him before determining if he was a bust. In addition, you know nothing about what Hoffpauir will do against major league pitching, and Ryan may be this year's version of Bo Hart. I'd like to see him get a shot, but he is injured and that will give Kennedy time to show whether or not this is going to be a consistent trend.

We all know that MIF is this team's biggest weakness. I don't think Ryan is going to develop into more than a major league super-sub, but the sample size is pretty small, so far. Izturis has done a good job, and he is providing about what could be expected of him. It would be nice to get an upgrade at both the SS and 2B positions in the near future. Mather and Rasmus are going to make it possible for the Cards to make a deadline deal with one of the their OFs. In the meantime, both are getting regular playing time against decent pitching.

You don't make money buying high and selling low. Give these guys time to develop decent trade value or bottom out completely. I think Duncan will do the former, and Kennedy will probably the do the latter.

Where did all the scorn for Duncan arrive from?

He was hurt the last half of last season and is just now rounding into shape and all of a sudden we've decided we don't like players w/ a career OBP of .356 and a career SLG of .520? He'll turn 27, not 37, in a month and makes less than half a million dollars per year and yet everywhere I read someone's ready to toss him to the scrap heap or send him to Memphis.

There are reasons to trade him, not yet, but once he rounds into form. When he starts playing better (did I mention he has only 22 PA's this year?), he'll have more value and be tradeable for something of value. Or we can keep him and have an .850 OPS player in our lineup. That'd be OK, too.

by chuckb on Apr 12, 2008 11:59 AM EDT   0 recs

Plus, has anybody thought what will happen if, the day after we trade Chris Duncan,

El hombre's elbow actually blows? We call up Mather (who, though he looked nice in Spring Training) has no ML experience, we call up Phelps (ditto, except he did NOT impress this spring)? Or, hey, maybe we could call up Bryan Anderson, throw a 1B glove at him, and say, see how this fits, you're starting everyday?

Don't matter

If pujols blows an elbow we can all disburse and go home. By the way I nominate ETS_STL for General Manager.
