the cards have lost the first game of every series this year except the nationals series. for whatever that's worth.
i'm not gonna be near the computer tonight, so i'm gonna use one of the nifty new SBN 2.0 features and program an overflow thread to open automatically at 11:15 p.m. CDT. the feature was buggy at first, but i think i trust it now; hope it works.

according to the Post-Dispatch. Fox has the rights but didn't pick it up (Yankees vs. Red Sox).

went to a hs game today
and was reminded of a reason why I love the game. From about 5th grade up tp the bigs certain things remain. I'm not sure you can say that for all sports maybe but baseball you really can.
I knew the starting pitcher and watched him play good kid good arm, but a soph facing 8 srs one soph...no worries
Heres what i gathered...Walks and errors will kill you. any time any level. You can ovid the occasional walk, He started the game with a walk guy stole second, error on through going into center...guy goes to 3rd...sac run scores 1-0. ground ball to 3rd should be an out ole'd and missed guy on first..next batter was his only mistake(and hit), hit out of park. then walk another steal error..and he steadily started to miss the strike zone after that..not by much but did
he was pulled down 3-0 in the first of what could have been way different..
I don't care who you are how old but playing like that gets you burnt 9 out of 10.
I guess thats why i love baseball and miss it more than any other sport I played. You can know how to win the game, but you have to execute it. Theres probably more sides to it than that but just my 2 cents
I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

Zito
I realize that this time last year, the Giants were still trying to build some veteran presence around Bonds. I also understand Zito's prior performance, relative market value and SF desire to keep fans in the seats.
With all that said - and in hindsight - and given prior discussion, including that from SF fans - has there ever been a more horrible free agent investment than Zito?

Carl Pavano?
I dont think he even had to pitch for the Yankees to earn his checks.

true
but pavano's contract didn't seem to restrict yankee spending too much. zito's deal verges on crippling.

restrictions
has there been a contract yet (albatross or no) that really restricted the Yankees from spending too much on a FA?
I agree that Pavano's contract really wasnt that much, but he hasnt done a whole lot to earn much of it. Sound familiar?

pavano's contract didn't hurt the yankees ability to spend. zito's is quite the burden for the giants.

Pavano
What I will always remember about Pavano after his great Marlin season was his "I'm a hot stud and I will take a private plane tour of various suitors around the league until someone (the Yankees) wins the beauty contest" - it was almost as if he were begging for a fall.............which he got

if my memory serves, after being a stud with Htn and then for Mets for half a season, Walt offered him more than the Rockies but he chose Colorado for "family reasons" - Hampton would have been the pre-Mulder but became the ineffective and injured Rockie turned Brave - funny how things work out

and if you didn't like that post
I thought I would reminesce about my earliest memories of Stl at SF baseball..........always from Candlestick Park..........Jack and Mike.....they always talked about the cold weather and wind......the Giants featured Tito Fuentes at 2b, Gaylord Perry or Juan Marichal on the mound.............McCovey at first, Mays in center and Bobby (not Barry) in right..............an indelible image is Mays in center leaping over Bonds in right (on the track) to make a classic catch........against what seemed at the time to be a chain linked fence...........have seen it a few times on greatest catches ever....in those days (1970s) - it was the Big Red Machine (Cards or Pirates in second) versus the West

Where are they now?
Late-inning replacement for Pat Burrell, So Taguchi, was seen just moments ago dropping a catchable fly ball in the 9th inning as Lidge and the Phils sink the Cubs, 5-3.
What happens when your defensive specialist can't play defense any more? We saw some of that from him last season.
by Urban Pawnee on Apr 11, 2008 9:49 PM EDT 0 recs
if burrell keeps slugging like he's doing, so will find himself out of a job.
The phillies would rather have a defensive slouch who can hit than one who cant.

So is somebody who I feel a deep personal liking for.
I was really sad when he went to Philly, of all places, where the fans will not likely give him a chance. But he is going to be 39 this summer. Edmonds has lost more than a few steps in the outfield at that age too. This is So's last year in the bigs.
I really admire the way he plays the game. I'm more sad than critical about this. But there's no point denying it.

So will substitute in LF for Pat Burrell and the game-tying run will score from 2nd when So three-hops a throw to the 3B who cuts off the throw. I love So but it was time for him to go.
