Wells Lohse
7-17, 5.70 9-12, 4.62

well, let's give this another try . . . . . . april has been kyle lohse's worst month, historically ---- career era of 5.58 in this month. he's 1-1 in 3 career starts vs the rockies with a 3.50 era (not counting his unfortunate playoff appearance vs them last year). busch iii suits him well --- only 1 hr allowed here in 21.1 career innings, with a 1-1 record / 2.95 era. of course, it could simply be that he did well against the feeble st louis offenses he encountered at this ballpark . . . . . .

There are only 2 outcomes tonight

we win 9-8 vs Wells or we lose 6-1 vs Wells on a 3 hitter.

What's it gonna be?

seriously

I'm more than a little afraid we're going to see the unhittable Kip Wells. I'm a pessimist though, so 6 runs in 4 innings is probably more likely.

They will stick with the original rotation, with Looper pitching Friday and Wainwright coming back on full rest on Saturday.

Anyone have any news on Mulder? We got an update on Pineiro but wasn't Mulder supposed to start facing minor league hitters soon?

LaRussa gameplan

LaRussa doesn't like to steal with a LHB up because it closes that hole open on the right side of the infield with a runner on. However, then you get situations like that.

Skippy last year

I could be wrong but it seemed like last year he was always swinging at the first pitch. I've always been told that the 1st pitch you see is often the best you'll get but he wasn't always swinging at good pitches.

It seems like he's really worked on that aspect of the game and that's great considering he's batting leadoff this season.

Agreed

I'm nervous about Franklin facing Tulo, Helton, and Holliday. Rather have seen Franklin pitch that inning and save Springer for the heart of the order... Or use Isringhausen in the 8th and mix'n'match for the ninth.

Terrible hitting from middle of lineup

The main problem tonight has been terrible hitting by the heart of our lineup. One run won't do it on almost any day. When your only RBI come from Molina, and that one got over by about 2 inches, then you have problems. I think most nights though, Pujols, Ankiel, and Glaus will give us a bit more.

They did yesturday

As they say. Each team is going to win 60 and lose 60. It's the other 40 that count. So hopefully this isnt one of those 40.

2 through 5 hitters were 2 for 14 with 2 walks.

Just a lack of timely hitting tonight. There were a couple of key moments and our big guys didn't come through. You are right that they were doing fine last night. In general though, our pitching staff, even with Franklin's performance, pitched well enough to win. When we only give up 2 runs, we SHOULD be able to win, even with our light bats in the back end of the lineup.

Time to look for silver linings...

1. Kyle Lohse
2. Duncan had a decent day at the plate after a forgettable spring.
3. Same with Molina
4. Kyle McClellen and Brian Barton both had great debuts
5. Izzy looked extremely solid.
6. Springer and Flo both looked solid as well.

As for the bads

Don't forget, Cesar Izturis, God bless his heart, killed two rallies ... (but his defense was fantastic ... sarcasm intended) ...

I'm not including Izturis in the bads...

because he is doing what we expected :P

I should also add Adam Kennedy to the goods, 2 hits for him is good.

what a difference a day makes

Glaus looked good yesterday, drawing two walks (if I remember correctly)...and now he makes the costly error

this one hurts a bit...a wasted solid outing by Lohse

Please, Tony, let Barton leadoff and play RF!

agreed!

I really like Barton.

And I loved how excited and happy he was to get that first hit. That's what baseball is all about, ya know?

Wells only caught the plate

a half a dozen time. Nice patients in the first inning. Now I see why some of you guys run a little on the negative side. Where were the defensive subs in the eighth?

Nice to see the double-leadoff already paying dividends. You’re just not going to create that kind of excitement batting the pitcher ninth. No way.

Interesting thread to read over

Was playing pool and watching the game tonight in the later innings after teaching during the majority of Lohse's start.

Franklin was running a lot of balls inside -- I don't know if it was a strategy but especially against Holliday. That said, his fastball wasn't very good. If there's any pitcher in the pen that's primed for a collapse, it's Franklin. His peripherals from last year aren't sustainable and he's bound to regress badly.

Flores' slider looked amazing tonight. Great movement away from the lefties. I still wouldn't let him pitch to righthanded batters but if his slider has that kind of bite all season he'll return to being a useful specialist. His breaking ball never looked that good last season. Whatever the other pitch he was trying to use was (I think it was a curveball), he should ditch because it went nowhere but in the dirt and it was total slop. The only think he's going to do with that is hang it from time to time. Still, he impressed me and he's not a pitcher I liked much last year.

i hate the fact

that you are probably right about franklin. hate it, hate it, hate it. I have a totally irrational attachment to him 9and springer) and I hate seeing him fail more than just about anyone. That "unbeaten after the 6th" streak last year was a thing of beauty.

I'm afraid he's hurt, and that it'll take TLR a month to realize it...

Bottom line?

We were held to ONE run by KIP FREAKING WELLS....that as all of us who watched this guy last year is the hardest thing for me to see tonight. I simply don't understand why Tony insists on using a pitcher for one inning who getting the job done, to bring in a guy who well...gave them the game in the 8th. One game...but I think we have seen our future...and it ain't pretty....

That game was cold and depressing. Poor Glaus is going to be compared to Rolen every chance the STL fans get.

Wells first games last year...

I know, he still sucks and all, but in his first 2 games last year....

First game vs Mets - 6 IP, 5 h, 2 ER, 4BB, 7K
Second game vs Astros - 7 IP, 1h, 0 er, 1 BB, 7K

Today vs Cards - 5.1 IP, 4H, 1ER , 3BB, 3K

Seems like ole Kipper, likes to get his new teams hopes up, before he dashes them with his outstanding mediocrity.

Not sure why everyone seems pissed at Glaus

It was a dribbler requiring a perfect throw to get the runner at the plate. I would seriously doubt if anyone makes that play.

by bailorg on Apr 1, 2008 11:52 PM EDT reply actions

yeah

it was an awful throw, but those things happen. I'm more angry at the umpire for squeezing flores.

by azruavatar on Apr 1, 2008 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not like it was the worst defensive play in history

but if you a major league infielder, you should make that play. Plain and simple.

He was pretty bad defensively tonight (early and late) but his bat is going to make up for it, if he ever makes solid contact.

I disagree...

I think it was a difficult but not impossible play.

That being said, i'm over it. I believe our offense will come around, and our pitching looked great.

by Ankiels Missing Curveball on Apr 1, 2008 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Best of both worlds

I admire your optimism, seeing the offense with a "it was one bad game" attitude but not seeing the pitching as "it was one good game." I'd love for us to do that again on the mound, but I sincerely doubt that with our rotation. Likely outcome? We score more runs than tonight, but give up more as well. We dodged too many bullets tonight (hard outs all night) for me to feel good about the pitching situation. At least we can take solace in the fact that the Rockies' lineup is one of the most potent we'll face this season.

After re-reading that post

I said a lot of things that are no-brainers. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this loss was a kick to the gut, both in the way it happened and in what happened yesterday, and I'm not feeling too optimistic.

I'm not sure it required a perfect throw

Just one between Yadi's shoulders and his feet, and not off the body. He made the right play in coming home, just didn't execute.
