Return of the belly?

per mlb...The Nationals are dealing with a surplus at second base, and Rosenthal believes that Ron Belliard is the most logical piece to move, what with his $1.6MM salary this season, and his $1.9MM for next.  Rosenthal pinpoints the Rockies (perhaps too little range on the right side with Jeff Baker and Todd Helton), Cardinals, Twins, and White Sox as potential trade partners

I for one don't see it happening with Kennedy and Miles (although miles plays SS alot) it happening. I liked belly and will always remeber that play in S.D. he made. Thought for the money he would have been a good sign and thus far Kennedy has been a bust he started on like a 1.mil minor league deal last yr...

i'd love to have him back
proven veteren who can play the field and hold his own at the plate. it would at least solve the 2B problem for the time being.

send a mid-level prospect or something their way.

he's better than Kennedy
and has lost a lot of weight this off-season- his shirt tail actually stayed tucked in all game last week.  He also seems to have gotten the toungue thing under control, though I have to admit I wasn't watching for it.  usually it's noticable enough that you don't have to watch for it...

Anyway I'd say absolutely, especially at that price.

ideally we'd give them one of our right handed bullpen guys- franklin, maybe, plus a bit of cash, or Thompson? and move Motte up.  I have no idea what the nats need, though.

Would be more worth the money
than the Cesar Izturis signing.

Yeah, I'd love to make that deal, but only if they DFA miles because of it -- or maybe make him a "grit coach."

On with the (good) youth movement!

I'd rather see them try Jarrett Hoffpauir than
bring in another aging second baseman.  The attrition rate at that position is so significant, I don't think it makes sense until they've exhausted their internal options.

plus they may have to admit a mistake
like cutting izzy2.
I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punchinjudy hitter-major league 2

Izzy2? What?

oh, good.
that scared the crap out of me, as I thought izzy2 = Chris Perez.

I was gonna say, I know I've been kinda lax on checking out Cardinals news the past couple weeks, but wow . . .

but it's okay, heart attack averted.

can someone run this through a lineup predictor
let's put our regular starting lineup as:

2B - Belliard
SS - Ryan
1B - Pujols
3B - Glaus
LF - Duncan
CF - Barton/Skippy
RF - Ankiel
C  - Molina

in a traditional LaRussa order and see what we get.  Defensively, that team would be better than last years and certainly better than what we plan on putting out.  I'd also wager that team would be significantly stronger offensively.

Not to be a jerk towards to human beings but I REALLLLLLLLLLLY hope Kennedy and Izturis get cut.

by Hardcore Legend on Mar 9, 2008 11:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

now you're asking for two miracles
in one hand they could cut kennedy Cause mo could be like hey wasnt my bad im the new guy, it was walts mistake. However cutting C.Iz would be admitting his mistake.

What would be the cost dif there?

I say keep Kennedy one more year, trade cough reyes for Belly, and cut C.Iz

At this point we can't trade Reyes
Looper, as predicted, is about to turn back into a pumpkin.  Our rotation looks like Wainwright, Pineiro and fill in the blanks.  Reyes has to stay.

We will more than likely have to give them a young OF or relief pitcher to get him.

Odds are, however, we won't make a move on this. They've made their bed and plan on sleeping in it.

Turn back into a pumpkin... Goddamn, that was funny.
Rasmus or bust.

Reyes is way too much.
They'd take that in heartbeat. A solid reliever should do it in my opinion (note: I said "solid" not crummy).

punchinjudy, can I get a link to the article?

Zipping this up quickly
Comparing Kennedy to Belliard:

Player   Age   AVG   OBP   SLG   G  AB   R   H 2B 3B HR RBI  BB   K SB CS
Belliard  33  .270  .329  .405 133 477  57 129 28  0 12  55  37  89  0  1
Kennedy*  32  .251  .310  .332 110 355  35  89 19  2  2  32  27  49 12  4

So, yeah.  Belliard good, Kennedy bad.

Not only that, but Belliard only costs $2 M for next season which would make him a suitably cost backup should the Cardinals go after a player like Hudson to play 2nd.

by Hardcore Legend on Mar 10, 2008 12:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Jelly Belly
I would love to have Jelly Belly back on the team!!!  I loved his style of play and I thought it was ridiculous that they let him go after 06....  He would upgrade our defense and offense by quite a bit.

So if Mo goes after him I might just start to like Mo(oh wait I already started liking him after the Rolen trade).

I say go for it!!! and if it happens our team will look much much better!

by Calhoun on Mar 10, 2008 12:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No thanks,
but I love how he drooled more than TLR over a player over 50 with a hypo in his pocket. Good times.
Rasmus or bust.

by Zoop on Mar 10, 2008 2:05 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

YES....
Thanks to SS and 2nd base, we still have something to wax negative about. How dare Kennedy play injured like Rolen did, dont they know we hate injuries yet!

We bust out all the dirty comments that attack a player we already have on the roster (or roaster), but when it comes to signing some fringe, scumbag free agent or making a trade for one that might help win 2 games over the season, we're seemingly all for it.

Lets bring Belliard back while a class act guy like Hoffpauier that only brings a gamble on the future to the roster sits and waits.

Let's TRADE somebody to get Belliard, that'll solve the infield problem, fill out the team with Bonds, Lofton, Sosa, Weaver, Wells, Alfonseca, the Rocket, Mesa and the guy we already have that Albert and Yadier brought home from Eddie Perez' old timer's camp in the sunny DR. As much as Ive supported TLR over the years, when he goes I think a lot of talk about dumpster diving goes with him.

If we can't be good, can we at least be lucky?

by cardschinmusic on Mar 10, 2008 4:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Come on......
Acquiring Belliard would not be dumpster diving...
The reason people like Jelly Belly is you know what your gonna get.  With Hoffpauier you have no idea what he is going to do at the Major League level.  Belly put up some really good numbers last year and he is better on defense and offense then anyone on our team at 2nd...

So I say get a life...... get off your high horse... people can debate about acquiring a player all they want... you dont have to be disrespectful when you dont agree..

by Calhoun on Mar 10, 2008 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

One more thing..........
Fans try to think up different ways to improve their team all the time...  Tony has nothing to do with it.  And fans arent going to stop just because TLR isnt the manager anymore.. thats just stupid.

by Calhoun on Mar 10, 2008 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ahhh yes...Calhoun!
You dont think your banter about players (most actually ON the 40 man roster) has gone unnoticed. I've seen your stuff and theres no room for getting sanctimonious and all concerned about this post.

C'mon Cahoun, feigning piety re: discussing players is a little hard to handle considering the source. Jelly Belly is just a term of endearment, among many!

I do like the idea that he's an "improvement"!

Because literally I have no clue what the hell your talking about...
What banter are you referring to?
I am aware Jelly Belly is a term of endearment. What does that have to do with this conversation at all?

Geez Cal, the comprehension level here must be waaaaay off.

Evidentally, nothing you or I write here is understood by the other.

I guess that means its time to give up, I never intended it to go down this way so I'll concede to you and old HCL.

For taking some of your comments personally.  Just some of your comments I interpreted as you insulting me.  So my apologizes.

Goes for me too....
My apologies to you! So hard to figure out what the other guys saying sometimes, when its in writing only. I know I misinterpreted.

HCL jumped on one word on my first post and it got screwy from there. However, its a word I'll leave out of future postings because it implies different things to different people.

Face to face, I know we'd probably have a beer and a laugh or two.

The air IS thin...
I have to admit, but I'm  more through with the vetern and questionable process of bringing in players with La Russa than ever before. Ive been a guy that supported him in the past, that all changing now! I have VEB to thank for that transition.

Never let it be said that old HCL climbs up on a horse every now and then,:)!

I have to say i would like to see the belly back, could we trade miles and a right handed bull pen guy for him, the cards should at least look into it.

If they turned around and traded for Belliard
it would make them look kind of stupid.  Like maybe they don't know what they are doing when they evaluate players.  Or maybe they are looking at the wrong things, like how sloppy Mr. Belliard looked or how heavy he was.  Maybe they forgot to notice that maybe he didn't hit so well right away because he was in a new league with new pitchers, and not very long at that.  He hit 38 doubles last year.  I think he's figured out NL pitching now.  They forgot to notice that he was more than adequate at 2nd and that he was quite good on the DP.

Nope.  The Cardinal braintrust wanted Adam Kennedy.  They wanted him enough to give him a very generous 3 year contract.  Then they seemed surprised that he couldn't hit lefthanders.  I even knew that.  I feel bad for Mr. Kennedy.  His skills have deserted him, and he seem to not know how to get them back.  For the sake of the team, and Mr. Kennedy himself, I hope he gets them back.  I don't believe he wants to be a bad player.

Second base has been a black hole for some time now.  I don't want them to bring another one in-whoever it is, it will end up being the wrong one. So no, let Mr. Belliard go somewhere other than here. They should be taking a look at Hoffpauir, but they won't.  I don't know if he's a major leaguer, but he certainly won't be one if he's not given a chance.

In the off season, Mr. LaRussa said we would be "surprised" by how Izturis plays. Well, color me surprised-I'm sure it's not the way he meant, though.  But what do I know.  I'm just a fan, albiet long enough to say that Curt Flood was my first favorite Cardinal (ah....one never forgets their first, RIP, Mr. Flood) and he's the genius.  I am just very disenchanted with the non direction this franchise has taken.  You ever see arrows pointed left and right at the same time?  That's the Cardinals this year.  And I am distressed that Mr. LaRussa is back and then back again next year.

I apologize for the rant.  I just need to right now.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

plus lots of teams trade for guys
away only to A. re-sign them the next year, or trade back for the guy. Can't think of any examples that come to mind, but know not just MLB teams have done it. Didnt Jason kidd just become a Mav again? I know its later down the line than this, but just cause a team lets a guy go or trade him doesnt always bar the doors closed on a return.

The trade/player + cash?
So propose your trade that might bring Belliard here? I dont have a clue what we have to offer the Nats that they might need. Starters are a problem, same with us.

Make a proposal! Hes one of the hottest hitters in their camp next to Lastings M. ?

I dunno on that part
just know that teams have done it. It's interesting they said he's available, but most have said their other 2B options havent been doing well. So why would they move him? I have not read any updates on this.

I hear you on that...
I mentioned on your other Diary re: 2nd base:

Based on how little Harris, Orr and Boone are producing compared to Belliard, who is one of the top two hitters in camp, looks like Belliard could/should be starting for the Nats.

Acta has to be thinking he's got his 2nd baseman. Also, they appear to be a pretty good team outside of needing a couple of starters. Who would they want for Belliard, they have relief pitching and a fairly decent outfield if Pena warms up.

I dont care for the idea of Belliard wearing a Redbird uni again, but even with that, Im not sure what we have to offer the Nats might want. Starting pitching seems to be the focus of any future acquisition talk as of now, for them and us.
