MLB 2k8

The new controls and franchise mode are way better - but I still suck. So who else has given MLB 2k8 a whirl?

Star-divide

I'm really digging the new controls and the UI layout is way better than last year's - so we're in good shape so far. My only problem is that I still suck. Pitching is fun, yet frustrating till you get the hang of it. And just like every other baseball video game, you just want to swing at everything as hard as you can.

So who else has played? What are you doing with your franchise. I just started making deals right and left to begin with. I wanted to dump the players I didn't like, and so far, I think I've done ok...

Promoted rasmus.

Brandon Looper + a minor league throw-in or 2 for Stephen Drew

Izturis + Duncan for Carlos Gomez, Ruben Gotay and a minor league pitcher

Now I just need to get rid of kennedy, miles and spezio. I'm thinking I'm gonna end up struggling a lot this year and maybe next - but gomez, rasmus and ankiel in the OF should be interesting. And the middle infield is young, cheap and decent with some potential. 2nd base isn't ideal, but it'll do for now. What's everyone else doing? and did I just screw myself... hah.

MLB2K8 vs THE SHOW

I'm probably going to pick up MLB08: THE SHOW (PS2, PS3) over MLB2K8 since most everything I've read says THE SHOW is better. Anyone here have any opinion?

The mechanics for 2K8 look intriguing but I've heard tales of glitchiness and the players never seem to look at all like they're supposed to. Plus, the ROAD TO THE SHOW functionality in THE SHOW looks pretty cool.

by dontEATnachos on Mar 28, 2008 12:42 PM EDT   0 recs

the show

I haven't played 2k8, but I have the show and I will say it's probably the best baseball game I've played (and I pick up a new one almost every year). The graphics on the ps3 are stellar, and the road to the show mode is pretty fun. Busch stadium and the st. louis skyline were replicated perfectly.

I'm waiting until the opening day rosters are available for download to start playing a cardinals season.

How's the framerate on PS3

Last year both baseball games were fairly brutal in terms of frame rate and a big problem with the "stairstep" on supposedly round edges.

With no evidence to the contrary, Colby Rasmus is clutch

by joker24 on Mar 28, 2008 5:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

no problems

I'm a stickler for this sort of thing, and i haven't noticed any frame rate drops. The graphics are great, absolutely no complaints here. I've boycotted EA until they get their crap together on PS3, playing an EA game on PS3 can be like watching a slide show at times.

by jeff_abs on Mar 28, 2008 10:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah

I swear Microsoft is in collusion on that or something. Seriously there's no reason for EA to have NHL 08 in 30 frames for PS3 and 60 for the 360.

With no evidence to the contrary, Colby Rasmus is clutch

by joker24 on Mar 29, 2008 1:28 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

the problem with 2k8

is that there is a framerate issue, however there is supposedly a patch in the works that is being targeted to be released by opening day. great game otherwise, i've gotten used to the framerate issue and once we get a patch i think i'll really love the game.

i haven't got a chance to play the show though, but i actually preferred that over the other games on the market back when i had my ps2.

by lopey986 on Mar 29, 2008 1:46 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

agreed.

definitely the show. There're so many more options to choose from.

I wish the old MVP still existed, but I'll gladly take the Show over 2K8.

On with the (good) youth movement!

by aet15 on Mar 30, 2008 1:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The Show

Yeah, I bought the Show, primarily because I heard that it's better than 2k8. I haven't had any real complaints for it, except for the new form of "Guess the Pitch". I just can't figure out how it works. But I can tell you that it loves Adam Kennedy. In manager mode, he won the Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger. I didn't understand it.

Also, I bought 2k6 a couple years ago, and that was not very impressive on my part.

Prospects are good. Especially when they aren't rushed.

by CraveCase on Mar 28, 2008 2:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You can switch the "guess pitch" back

to the old version, in a gameplay options menu. Classic 1/6 is the one that's familiar to me.

by Nate811 on Mar 28, 2008 4:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, I did that

But, I'm trying to determine the difference between "Classic 1/6" and "Classic 1/4". I've been using 1/4, and it's not bad.

Prospects are good. Especially when they aren't rushed.

by CraveCase on Mar 29, 2008 4:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I really like the way 2k8 uses the right analog stick for most things. You just use a series of motions to pitch (pull back, push forward, release for a fastball) and to throw you push in the direction of the base (right for first) to throw - hold it down to throw harder. I believe 2k8 is the only option for those of us with only an xbox360. These sports franchises need to knock it off with their exclusive rights. I'd like to have a few games to choose from.

by Birds on the Matt on Mar 28, 2008 12:47 PM EDT   0 recs

Not likely

With EA trying to acquire Take2, the likelihood of having more sports games and not fewer isn't likely to happen. It's unfortunate though because competition between different sports franchises seems to force more innovation. The way the dual analog stick controls for sports games are going though (Fight Night: Round 3, skate, and now MLB 2K8) it's a pretty interesting evolution and I'm all for encouraging this kind of thing.

But yeah, 2K8 is the only option available if you're not on a Sony system (since Sony is the one who develops THE SHOW). As I understand it, exclusive rights only apply to 3rd party games released on different manufacturers consoles (so MS or Nintendo could make their own baseball game, they just can't release it on a competitors system).

my Cardinals franchise, 2K8

Ok, to do this you have to have an open mind and forced trades. I am running this Cardinals franchise how I would want to run the real squad. Now, I know I wouldnt be able to force any real teams to take these trades, but its a video game, and its mine.

Mulder to SFO for M. Cain and T. Lincecum
Glaus to BOS for T. Bucholz and ML MR
Looper to NYY for I. Kennedy and P. Hughes

Promoted Rasmus and a couple created players from the farm after the first season.

Demoted Izturis to AAA to make room for Rasmus and make Ryan my starting SS.

This is a work in progress franchise, and I'm not done dealing yet. My payroll is at 98 mil, and I'm stocked with young arms throughout the farm, as well as talented position players workin their way up.

Oh, and if you want to know a glitch on the game to get infinite cards/credits, let me know.

C'mon you Redbirds, lets prove em' wrong, again!

by yer dog first on Mar 28, 2008 1:30 PM EDT   0 recs

I did not force trades and heres a fe things i did

made my guy to play second...
eventually traded kennedy and izz2 to the cubs for there 2b and Marshall
forget who i traded to get I kennedy
signed scott poz

my teams pitching is terrible im not as good as dog, but did it fair and tipped him about the ian kennedy deal to NY...jk dog

oh and the card trick works and the more u use the better.

also if u havent downlaod the free parks, and traded series 2(just the set no new packs)

I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

So I just got 2k8 this weekend and I don't see Rasmus in the minors

Are you on WII or PS3? Am I missing anything?

Any other WII users able to tell me how to get Rasmus?

Also, just started my season and thought it was interesting that the WII thought I should start LaRue over Molina on opening day.

2k8...

is an embarrassment to sports gaming compared to MLB '08 The Show. I was a life long MVP Baseball guy, 2005 was the greatest baseball game I've ever played. I really enjoyed MLB 07, but it still didn't touch MVP... that all changed with 08.

I went out and bought a PS3 and bought the Show with it... best baseball game I've ever played in my life. The Franchise mode is somewhat lacking versus MVP 05, but it works. Road to the Show is the greatest thing ever.

Prior to Getting '08 The Show...

I was locked into a 4 month process of creating and updating and trading and releasing players to make the rosters current. You know what, though? It was worth it.

I was considering making a similar post...

reviewing the game.

Here's my take on it so far, making reference specifically to the Nintendo Wii version.

Good things about this game

The Wii controller gives you a new dimension, as you actually swing the controller to swing, and you can shake the controller to get players to sprint faster from base to base.

The Trade Finder and interest meter are excellent things. The Trade finder gives you a lot of options for trading players, more like what a GM would probably get if they made it public they were actively looking to trade a player

Bad things

The Drew Carey Theme "Cleveland Rocks" by the PResidents of the U.S.A. is overplayed to the point that a song I thought was pretty cool on the soundtrack is already getting old, despite the fact that I'm only 15 games into my franchise mode.

Issues with battings: It's almost impossible to get a base hit on the ground anywhere except up the middle. I've even hit hard liners right over the 1st base bag that are easily handled by the first baseman. In addition, before I turned the power rating WAY down, it was WAY too easy to hit home runs. I actually had several games in a row where over 50% of my hits were home runs, which of course is a little ridiculous. (It was pretty sweet when I had a 4-4 day with Ankiel that included 3 homers and a triple though).

Controls on the Wii are a little tough, despite what I said about liking the Wiimote usage. This is more just a "getting used to it" situation, but I've still had plenty of situations where I've gotten caught in rundowns because I Was trying to get a batter to run to 2nd while also having a runner head home, and I ended up with the batter on 1st and the other runner getting tagged out between 3rd and home.

Overall, this is a very fun game. I haven't played The Show, but I can say that MLB 2k8 is a good game and incredibly fun on the Wii.

Worked for PSM and Games Radar in stints but more importantly, IGN.com for five years. Trust me I say that The Show is much, much, much better than MLB 2K.

I Bought A Playstation...

...partially for the reason of finally being about to play the show. If you were as passionately devoted to the greatest of MVP Baseball, you need to at least buy a refurbished PS2 for sixty or seventy bucks so you can get the show. It's truly worth it.

by mynameistyler on Mar 28, 2008 3:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

it's not a bad reason to pick up a ps3

I know it seems like you're buying the console for one game, but if you plan on following the series, that's a good 7 or 8 games over the years, and PS3 would be your best bet.

Plus, if you haven't tried out the Metal Gear Solid series. . . damn, you need to.

Does anybody have

The Show '08 for PS2? I've got the Show '07 and enjoy it, but I don't have the money right now to buy a ps3 and the tv and audio equipment to take full advantage of it.

I'm wondering if The Show '08 is different enough from '07 to warrant buying the PS2 version of it.

by arch support on Mar 28, 2008 3:32 PM EDT   0 recs

Just bought it for PS2

Very, very similar to 07 from what I've played so far. No Colby Rasmus, but you can create players if you want.

I like it because of the updated rosters, but if you want to update the '07 rosters and go from there you're not missing anything special IMHO. If I had the patience, I'd buy MVP 2005 and reset the rosters with that game. I agree that was the best baseball game I've played. If you were able to play current teams in classic stadiums, that would be awesome.

Back in my day...

we played Baseball Stars. And we had to play about a million dummy games against The Lovely Ladies to earn enough cash to create the entire NL East, by hand. That's right, I said NL East. And then, a few weeks later, we'd forget to hold down the Reset button when we powered off, and the whole damn thing would be lost, only to start over again.

Now that's what I call gaming. Consarnit.

MLB 2k8

is a pretty decent game. Unfortunately, it's taken a bit of a three-week hiatus until my XBOX 360 gets fixed.. (red ring of a death.. blah.)

I went through the farm system on the Cardinals and about 55 of the 75 minor leaguers have real life counterparts with different names. They left out Allen Craig and Bryan Anderson though.

As for the overplayed soundtrack comment.. just make your own custom soundtrack and integrate it into the game. The only band I could stand after two days on MLB was the Flaming Lips.

until 2010 i believe

but EA is attempting a takeover of Take-Two (2k is a subsidiary of take-two) so they would get the rights to mlb as well as games such as bioshock and grand theft auto (which would be a BAD thing, regardless of the problems with 2k baseball this year)
