Troy Glaus
Rotoworld says that TLR says he might rest Glaus once per series. We'll see what happens, but this comment could be interpreted to mean that TLR is ready and willing to give a lot of playing time to Ryan (and hopefully not Miles).

i kinda don't like this idea
as far as i know, glaus is the second best hitter on this team. to take him out of the lineup 33.3% of the time is not the best idea in my opinion. on the flipside, the pop on the bench would be nice.
i'd rather see izzy2 out of the lineup and ryan at short (his natural position).

It will be interesting ...
as TLR has already indicated he intends to sit Pujols more this year, also. I hope he is looking at rotating their off days. That would be a lot of pop to take out of the lineup at once. On the bright side, it could potentially allow both players to maintain their play level longer during through the season.
I don't think TLR is adverse to playing Ryan, I just don't think he is excited about the prospect of starting him. He has said he feels Ryan needs more seasoning before he will trust him with an everyday gig.
Ryan..
shouldn't be an everyday 3B anywhere. He doesn't have the "profile" for it. If he's to be an everyday player it will be as MIFer.
Thanks for the highlight moments 15 and 27!!!
Agreed.
I didn't mean to imply that Ryan would be the starting 3B. I was making a general comment about TLR's preference to play him off of the bench as opposed to a starting role. Ryan doesn't have the power production to be an everyday 3B, but I think he can fill in fairly well.
Tony..
If TLR really sits Glaus 1/3 of the time he should be fired immediately. THERE IS NO BACKUP 3B. I wouldn't mind seeing Ryan playing at least 1/3 of the time to spell Kennedy and Izturis, but not Glaus. If the Cards want to have a shot, Glaus needs to play 150 games and have 30 HR and 100 RBI...at least. If he's healthy there's not a reason in the world he shouldn't play everyday and put up those numbers.

misunderstood
I did not mean to imply that sitting Glaus was a good idea--
I only meant that it seems that TLR may be willing to give Ryan a decent amount of playing time, which is a good thing.

Ryan
Ryan's value in playing is not so much what he'll bring to the table, but rather the improvement he would be over Miles or Izturis. Let's not kid ourselves...Brendan Ryan is a decent little ball player, but he's no Chone Figgins, a supersub who is basically an everyday starter at hell knows where. He's a fringe major leaguer. However, even in his fringiness, he's a step up over the other two. By him playing, the other two are not. Playing him at third, with some mix of Kennedy/Miles/Izturis at the MIF spots is a dreadful set of players.

I think you are right.
Ryan is probably an above average bench player, but he probably isn't any kind of everyday SS for a contending team. That said, it looks like the team would clearly be better served having Rico and Ryan as backup MIs than Ryan and Miles. Miles has been used in a lot of field positions, but frankly he is only close to an average fielder at 2B. Ryan would be serviceable at both MIs, 3B, and he could probably learn to play corner OF positions (could it be worse than Duncan or Miles?). Rico provides more offensive pop, and he can cover a position that the team has no backup for.
But Tony has an axe to grind with Ryan,
for whatever reason. I don't see him playing Ryan unless he has to.
"Is this Heaven?"
"No, it;s Iowa."
"I could've sworn it was Heaven."
Uncle Rico
It might end up being a blessing that Uncle Rico gets the last roster spot to open the season. Hope Tony gives him a start and some ABs early. We desperately need a true backup 3B with some pop. Ryan is MI who tries his best over @ 3B. You gotta figure that one of Izturis, Kennedy, or Miles is going to get hurt in the first half of the season and Ryan would be needed in the MI rotation in any event. We need a viable 3B backup and Freese is not ready for that role yet. Hopefully he emerges @ Memphis this season giving us another option.
