Widescreen Option

This isn't really diary (oh crap did I just say that) fanpost worthy, but I wanted it to be in a place where it would get a lot of viewership because I know this was one of the main complaints when the new format went live.

So, because of the whining over at Lookout Landing, Trei et al have added the option of having a wider screen. The option is located right under the site logo by New Fanpost/Fanshot. You have options of having it be narrow or wide.

The wide option will widen the main post part of the site. However, it is not perfect and you will still have some greyness on the sides. This feature if mainly for widescreen monitors.

Another change is that you can go to your profile and choose not to have avatars shown by you or to see anyone elses avatar.

LB--sorry if this is not fanpost worthy. I felt as if this was necessary information to pass along.

Nothing is too trival not to be diary worthy.

And yes months and months of threatening and lewd comments, and persistent whining have paid off.

(P.S. I am responsible for some of the MS Paint artwork:

Though something tells me that this is not the community that would appreciate Graham's Flesh Eating Pony, for that go to LL and look at the Preemptive Strike diary)

can you get...

Favicons added too? That would really be great.

The contrast between red and black, though...

ick.

Whatever floats your boat, but...

Widescreen reading is less efficient, your eyes get tired and your brain loses interest the longer the line and wider the page. It may not look that visually pleasing, but narrow screens actually speed up your ability to read

That's why we read pages at 8.5 x 11 instead of 11 x 8.5.

depends if you are reading several paragraphs or just a line or two of text

as far as normal commenting goes, especially at a place like LL where nutty tangents are the norm, a widescreen format it much easier on the eyes.

Yes, but on widescreen.

the old site took up 4 inches for the text. At least on my monitor. Which is ridiculous and about like reading a paperback novel 3 feet away from my head.

Now with the widescreen option, it's closer to 9 inches. 8 1/2 on my monitor

I know that I'm in the minority,

but I like the narrow screen better...I like to see everything without having to scroll side to side.

Another thing I enjoy about the new setup is the ability to go back and forth between the different SBN sites (or at least baseball at this point) quite seamlessly...I've already had the chance to have some good natured bantering with some kind folks on the Rockies and Padres sites. Every day, several teams make the leap (only the Brewers and Reds are left in our division).

I know...not important stuff, but I am easily amused!!

well, i have a WS montior so the narrow screen was really obnoxious

There's so much stuff on the sidebar that the main text on the front page is still pretty much centered, it's when you get to comments that the narrow screen makes things difficult

yeah

I'm keeping narrow. Even with a widescreen monitor, I like the narrow better.

On with the (good) youth movement!

Just for the record we didn't implement a wide screen option solely on the basis of feedback from LL. Bloggers and members of several blog communities migrated to the new platform asked for this and that's why we implemented it. The timing lined up with the launch of LL and 4 other blogs yesterday. And with LL I addressed the issue specifically because I knew it was a primary part of their pre-migration apprehension on the move. Overall, it was good feedback from all the communtities and we're happy with the result.

since you are here....

About Favicons I know it isn't something major, or really anything hard to implement. So is it each sites responsibility or can you guys do it for them? I would love for VEB to have a small version of the logo for the Favicon.

I was also wondering

the "my blogs" pull down at the top of the screen is a great addition for those of us who belong to numerous blogs on the SB Network, but if you belong to more than 10 (I'm in 12 and counting), then only the first 10 show up when you click on "my blogs", and they are in alpha order, which means that "Viva El BIrdos" , (my favorite) does not appear.

I hope I'm making sense here...bottom line, I'd like to see ALL my blogs appear when I click on that icon at the top of the screen.

Thanks for all your hard work on this.

this is something we'll be addressing soon

Us devs are members of all the blogs, and we're dealing with the same frustrations :)

Cool!

Another feature I love is the "recent activity" screen under the user profile area where it not only tracks each post you make across the SB Network, but how many replies you get...very handy for those of us who post across multiple blogs...good work, guys.
