Season Predictions for '08

Peer into the future, if you dare...

On September 30, 2008, the following will have come to pass:

-Juan Gonzalez will start the season on the major league roster.  He will get 100 PA's before re-re-retiring because his hamstring says, "No mas."
-Anthony Reyes will spend some portion of this year in the bullpen.
-No Cardinals middle infielder (over 150 at-bats) will have an OPS over .700
-One of the outfielders (Lud, Dunc, Ank) will break out and hit 35 HR.
-Adam Wainwright will be the only Cards starter to break double-digits in wins.
-The Cards finish 4th in the Central with a 74-88 record, behind the Cubs, Brewers, and Reds.
-Colby Rasmus comes up in June and finishes 3rd in the ROY vote, behind Kosuke Fukudome and Geovany Soto.

Anybody else?

What I think will happen:
  • Carpenter, Mulder, and Clement fail to combine for 30 starts
  • Colby Rasmus is kept in the minors for too long
  • Brendan Ryan returns to the minors for some period of time
  • Juan makes the team and flames out by mid May and is released
  • Due to the release of Juan and an injury to Ludwick, Joe Mather makes debut and slugs several homers by the end of the season, but with a Rob Deer-esque batting average
  • Ankiel puts up 30 HR and 100 RBI with 10 outfield assists (would be higher but runners stop testing him by early June)
  • Wainwright is the only starter over .500
  • Hoffpauir makes debut and puts up Brendan Ryan #'s with more RBI's. Cards sign Edgardo Alfonzo, Bret Boone, or Neifi Perez to be everyday 2B (assuming they find a way to rid themselves of Kennedy)
  • Cards finish 69-93 and choose not to take the best player with the early draft pick because of cost considerations.
  • Molina wins 1st gold glove
What I'd like to see happen:
  • Hoff and Ryan establish themselves as the DP combo of the future
  • Troy Glaus slugs 40 homers
  • Albert avoids the DL
  • Carpenter, Mulder, and Clement combine for 60 starts
  • Rasmus busts out in a huge way
  • Barton establishes himself as the leadoff man (so Rasmus won't have to do it)
  • Duncan is traded for a starter
  • The Cardinals orginization gets serious about winning a W.S. again

If that second list of bullet points come true
I think the last one will be pretty moot.  Particularly considering that the starter we get for Duncan would have to find a place in a then-crowded rotation.

And the Juan Gonzalez signing will look pretty deft in this rosy future.

I'd be happy
if at least 1 of these came true

Hmmmmm

Barton gets returned to wherever he came from

Aaron Miles gets most the playing time at 2b and hits .285, but a .650 OPS. Kennedy manages to improve over last years, but only puts up a .600 one.

Reyes will end up in Tony's doghouse and ends up being replaced by Sidney Ponson

Ryan ends up in Tony's doghouse and ends up demoted in favor of Barden.

Rasmus gets called up, but ends up in Tony's doghouse

Ankiel hits 30 homeruns, but has an OBP under .300. He still spends most of the season batting 2nd

Duncan gets hurt again, Skippy ends up becoming the full time left fielder.

Miguel Cairo joins the team after getting released by someone else

Cardinals finish 62-99, missing losing 100 games because a game with the Pirates is rained out and they don't bother to make it up.

And not Cardinal related, but Dusty Baker does several things that make people scratch their heads, but the Reds still come in first ahead of the surprisingly bad cubbies, who finish 3rd behind the Brewers

Fearlessly I say...

  1. That the Cards will be 1st in the NL Central
  2. That the outfield will provide 90HR
  3. That Mulder will come back at top form
  4. That Albert will undergo surgery
  5. That Reyes will stick to the rotation
GO CARDS!!!

I predict that.......
I say that....Lord, I have no idea.

So far....
you win the "bold predictions" award.

The idea that we win the NL Central without Pujols is VERY bold.

GO CARDS!!!

My version
-One of Carp, Mulder or Clement comes back in a studly way and matches career best-like numbers for a shortened season.

-One of them will sustain yet another injury that will prevent them for starting 5 games.

-Pujols will NOT finish in the MVP vote for the first time of his career, due to injury.

-Colby Rasmus will put up monstrous numbers for a partial season while big-league pitchers try to figure out where his holes are. (I expect they'll find the holes either in late 08 or early 09 before Rasmus then re-adjusts)

-Rick Ankiel isn't as good as we all hope, but still pretty solid, batting somewhere between .260 and .280 and putting up around 25 HRs and 70 RBI.

-Troy Glaus plays at least 140 games and hits 35 or more home runs.

-The Cubs win the division with 89 wins, and either the Brewers or Reds challenge, while the other falters.  The Cardinals sneak in the middle in 3rd place, but still finish below .500 with a record eerily similar to last season.

-The middle infield will be a mess all year, with none of the possible options starting 120 games.

by mtalken on Mar 3, 2008 10:24 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I've only got one...
Reyes wins 15 games.
"Why does he keep saying that?"

by Red Blazer on Mar 3, 2008 10:29 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ok, I'll take a shot!
  1. The middle infield is a massive monster of mediocrity all year, with Kennedy returning to his former, um, uh, greatness(?) or something, but only posting a .275/.340/.380 or so...and yet pacing the group.
  2. Ankiel will have a higher batting average than OBP, becoming the first everyday player ever to do such a thing (at least I think he'd be).  His like will a freakishly cartoonish .260/.258/.500 with 28 home runs.
  3. Duncan will stop dipping.
  4. Brendan Ryan will remember the signs and to wear his shades, or maybe Tony will break his vegetarian rule by gnawing his fingers off.  I'm not sure one way or the other on that one.
  5. Juan Gonzalez will make the team, then tear his hammy in his first at bat...again.

Fukudome
will end up being an enormous waste of money and a huge flop.  He might walk a few times, and he would suit the Cubs better hitting 2nd because of his slightly-better-than average OBP, but that'll be it.

Big Stupid Predictions
  1. The 08 Cardinals will shock us all by scoring early and often, to the tune of 806 runs.  Big years by Pujols, Ankiel, and Dunc, along with an out-of-nowhere career year from Ryan Ludwick, plus the late-season debut of Rasmus and a surprisingly potent bench (led by part-time OF and PH-er extraordinare JuanGone), will do the job.
  2. Pitching, however ... not so much.  STL hurlers will shave a not-quite-enough .15 runs off the team ERA, ending at 4.50.
  3. Despite prediction #1, prediction #2 will doom our boys to another sub-80-win season, thus allowing Mark Mulder, his shoulder and pitching career in tatters, to join the PGA tour by Oct. 15.
  4. Led by Dusty Baker, the Reds will be the surprise winner of the NL Central and will take the NL champion Dodgers to 7 games before yielding in the NLCS. (Arm-reattachment surgery for at least 3 Cincinnati pitchers will then be scheduled for Nov. 1.)
  5. A nasty rift will open between TLR and John Mozeliak as the trade deadline approaches, created by Moz's refusal to send down Brendan Ryan or to sign Neifi Perez for the stretch run.

Mainly Central -wise
But heres my cardinal predictions:
  1. Rasmus will not see the majors until september call-ups.
  2. Pujols and Yadi will be all-stars.
  3. Barton will develop a mystery 'injury' and will be stashed away on the DL at the beginning of the year.
  4. Gonzalez will make the team out of training and will put up decent numbers, allowing him to be traded to the Mariners in July.
  5. David Wells will be in a cardinal uniform at some point in time during the season.
Now my Central predictions --
  1. Geovany Soto will be a bust and Blanco will end up being the everyday starter.
  2. Ben Sheets -- 100 innings pitched, 100 days on the DL
  3. The Cincy Red will surprise everyone and finish last in the Central and their rookie pitchers will combine to post a ERA of over 6.00.
  4. The Pirates will be the team everyone thinks the Reds are by finishing close to .500 and in 4th place.
  5. Everyone's favorite Jason Marquis will be traded to the Rockies for a PTBNL.
  6. Ryan Braun -- the next Richie Sexson/Jay Gibbons
  7. Ned Yost will be fired in June after the Brewers are near the cellar after the first two months.
  8. The Astros will be the league leaders in the number of player DL days.

I really think
that we won't do as horribly as people are predicting. Many are being far too pessimistic for this season -- My reasoning?
  1. The players we lost Edmonds, Rolen, Eck, Wells, Bennett, etc. were all no key parts to our wins last year. If anything, most of them hurt us often (and yes, I loved Edmonds, Rolen, and Eck, but let's focus on last year).
  2. Glaus when healthy (even as recent as last year) was a dangerous hitter. He's bound to out-produce Rolen's numbers. Also, Edmonds had a horrific time hitting and was often replaced by Taguchi. Ankiel should be a significant step up from that, even if Rasmus doesn't come up for awhile.
  3. Yes, our pitching is bad, but basically the same as last year. I'm not sure how some of your predictions have us at 60 wins when our pitching has changed very little. If anything, I've got a better feeling about it this year. Reyes can't do worse than last year. Mulder is expected back sooner and in better form. Carp is actually going to come back into action and will be with us for half of the year. Clement should do better than Kip did.
  4. Our bullpen hasn't change. We should feel good about that.
If anything, the only position I feel will be significantly worse than last year is Izturis at short, and that's not a huge swing of talent either. Yes, Rolen at D will be missed, but Glaus should make up for it with hitting.

In all, I honestly feel more confident about the team this year than last. It should be a year hovering around .500, not a record where we only finish with 60 wins.

On with the (good) youth movement!

You Never Know... but can always hope.
  1.  Ankiel and Duncan each hit 35 homers.
  2.  Clemment gets a late start but still goes 12-8
  3.  Reyes becomes a stud closing in on 20 wins
  4.  Amari Marti (is that his name?) hits like a seasoned vet.
  5.  Juan Gone wins comeback player of the year.
  6.  Carp comes back strong but confined to the bullpin (ala Matty Mo back in the day) and ends up the closer after Izzy gets hurt.

by Birdos in Mexico on Mar 3, 2008 5:40 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Okay here goes
  1.  Yadi hits .280 with 14 HR's
  2.  Ankiel hits .250 plus but surprises by getting his share of walks.  Adds 35 Hrs. and good D.
  3.  Duncan hits well early, gets traded for middle infield help.
  4.  Reyes is a solid 2nd starter behind Wainright.
  5.  Mulder comes back pretty strong.  Gets a new long term contract.  Has more arm trouble because the real problem is in his hip.  Costs the Cardinals five more years of misery.
  6.  Ryan establishes himself as a solid major leaguer.
  7.  The bullpen turns out to be overrated and keeps the Cardinals from surprising the division.
  8.  Glaus is what we expect.
  9.  Rasmus comes up after Dunc is traded.  He's also what we expect.
  10.  Lucwick hits over 20 homers even though he's not an everyday starter.
  11.  Albert has a good year but opts for surgery in mid September when the Cards are out of the race.
  12.  Carp comes back in August.  Struggles early, comes through late.  Ready for '09.
  13.  A very good '08 draft and progress of many current players in the system put the Cards in the top ten organizational rankings.
  14.  Tony angrily resigns as he's targeted in the PEDS controversy with damning but circumstantial evidence.  Whitey hired.  Trades Pujols, Glaus, Kennedy, Looper, Duncan, et al.  Wins '09 pennant with scrubs and rookies.  Is rarely seen because he can't make it out of the dugout.

  6. Chris Perez ready to close, Izzy traded at Deadline for prospects (middle infield) Izzy signs 1 year contract in offseason to play "Cal Eldred" role in bullpen, retires a Cardinal after '09
  7. Rasmus has Hunter Pence type rookie year and wins ROY
  8. Pujols top 5 in MVP

  12. Juan Gonzalez hits 20 hr and wins Comeback Player of the Year

Alllriiiighty Then
  1. Pujols has an astounding season, but injuries start to mount by mid August, but because the Cards are only 3 games out of first place, Albert decides to play through the pain yet again.  Cards finish 2nd to Brewers
  2. Pujols has surgery in offseason.
  3. Pujols and Glaus are in the top 10 in MVP vote.
  4. Looper only makes 10 starts due to injuries
  5. Juan Gone/Duncan combo in left field puts up the best all around offensive numbers of any left fielder in the NL Central (yes even over Braun, Soriano, Lee, etc)/post worst defensive.
  6. Wainwright, Reyes both finish with at least 14 wins, no one else has more than 10.
  7. Only 2 blown saves all year for Izzy.
  8. Ryan beats out Izzy2 for starting SS job out of Spring Training

Here it goes
IF: Kennedy improves from last year, and has an OPS of around .700 Izturis will have a solid year defensively and steal 20 bases and get his OBP over .300. However Miles will play SS against RHP and 2B agains LHP. He will do what Miles does. Glaus will hit 30+ homers but hit around .240. Pujols will have a slightly better season than 2007. Ryan will start the year in AAA and we will possibly lose Barden. Yadi has his best year offensively and wins his first Gold Glove.

OF: Cards try to work a deal with the Indians to keep Barton and be able to send him to AAA. Indians don't bite. Cards start the season with 6 outfielders and are short on infielders. The outfielders are shuffled around to give them all at-bats. Rasmus is at AAA. Cards release Shumaker in late April (or trade him for a non-prospect) shortly after, Ankiel and Gonzo get hurt and Amauri Marti makes his debut. (he only sticks for about 2 weeks...until Ankiel comes back) Cards end up with 4 outfielders with 15-25 home runs each. However, their defense is terrible and Rasmus gets the call in August.

Pitchers: Cards send 11 different guys to the mound as starters and only Wainwright and Reyes top 10 wins and 25 starts. Mulder is hotcold, Carp comes back as a long reliever in July. The overall starter numbers are better than 2007, however. The bullpen has trouble except for Izzy. Franklin is a disaster, T.Johnson ends up with season ending surgery, Springer is prone to Gopher balls, Villone and Flores are decent, but not spectacular. Thompson pitches well and then gets traded.

The team surprises everybody and takes the best player available in the draft and gives him a record signing bonus. They also take a stud in the 4th round and give him an out-of-slot payout, making this their best-ever draft.

The Central is all bunched together all year long, but the Cards finish in a 3 way tie for 3rd with the Astros and Reds.

How about handin' me another helpin' of those mashed taters...thank you very much!
