Enjoy the past, Cards fans...
...because the near (and perhaps distant) future will not treat you kindly.

ahhh
there's a cubs can, sitting in the corner of VEB, ready to pounce! bad thing is he hasn't had any footing for 100 years.
would they be able to gloat if they did win? of course, that's a given, but i like to think that the cubs have gone from a decent team bringing up players from their farm system into a money powerhouse and buying their talented players.
I also think that zambrano will never win a cy young award, no matter how much my cub friends say he will, he's good but not award good.

re: ahhh
Hmmm, that's an interesting opinion, but I would guess Felix Pie, Ryan Theriot, Geovany Soto, Rich Hill, Kerry Wood, Carlos Marmol and Michael Wuertz would beg to differ with you. Yes, those are all players who came up through the Cubs system playing key roles on the 2008 team.
I don't blame you for fearing the Cubs money, though -- you should. I don't think you'll find too many Red Sox fans ashamed of their team's big-spending ways. You don't get extra points for fielding a winning team on a low budget. A win's a win, and you should all prepare yourselves for seeing a lot more of it from the Cubs now that management is finally opening up the purse strings and making some big-name acquisitions.
And about Zambrano, I haven't heard too many Cubs fans predicting he'll win the Cy Young -- at least, not too many knowledgable Cubs fans. Carlos himself has been the one predicting he'll win the award, though he wisely didn't do that this year. And I actually agree with your assessment of him. I see him as high No. 2, but not a No. 1. Nonetheless, he's our No. 1. And I'll assume I don't have to explain why. Certainly you Cardinals fans are aware of the dirth of quality starting pitching available, given your rotation.

Pie is fine.
He's back to playing in spring training games and, just the other day, he stretched a single into a double. He will be the Cubs opening day centerfielder.

"stretched a single into a double"... isn't that what his doctors did?

Cubs fans. After saying this ("One of my best friends is a Cub fan") , for the most part, they annoy the living he!! out of me.
Case in point. At a karaoke bar with my '34 Dizzy Dean jersey on. Some douchebag Cub fan comes up to me bragging about the Cubs, and while I agreed that yes, the Cubs likely will be better than the Cards this year; I said this:
"The MOMENT you win the World Series this year (as the guy boldly predicted), the drinks are on me."
Would I do that if I were certain they'd win? Heck no. But as I said to him, the Cubs always find a way to blow it; they simply can't finish the job. Look at their playoff runs (or almost-runs) since the '60s. THEY SIMPLY DON'T FINISH WHAT THEY START. Blame Steve Bartman, the damn Billy Goat, the Amazin' Mets or whatever; at some point, your franchise has to have smell-blood-in-the-water closers, on offense, defense and the mound (and PERHAPS a bit of luck).
Unfortunately, for us Card fans, it is merely inevitable numbers-wise that the Fubbies will win a title in our lifetime. The problem I have with that is the fact that if our team won the next five titles in a row, we'd never hear the end of how great the (fill in the year here) Cubs were.
Reminds me of when the '85 Bears won the Super Bowl. All Bears fans could talk about was how great their team was. Granted, they were pretty good, but as I told a friend:
"When you're team wins four (now five) Super Bowls, give me a call."
One of the best reasons why it's been great to be a lifelong Steeler fan. ;)

Again, cling to the past all you want...
...it's all you have this year. Beyond that, there are so many logical flaws in your post, I don't have the energy to address them all.

Logical flaws?
He told a story, stated a few historically accurate sports facts and then compared and contrasted. As far as logic goes, you say you don't have the energy to address all of his "logical flaws" but if you stopped wasting your time insulting other posters in one sentence posts and pooled all of the "energy" required to merely type one good argument, maybed you'd be on to something. As it stands, I don't see that, I see a defensive Cub fan talking about hope in a thread about a picture from the past.

You're not a very "strong reader," are you?
Show me one place in my posts on this thread where I insulted another poster. Go ahead. Show me.

way to avoid the point entirely
"I don't have the energy to address" all of your insults. But you indirectly insulted philbobilbo by down playing his intelligence.
besides, even if you don't agree with that point I made, don't just disregard the rest of the post. all my other points stand and this pointless...nothing debate is over for me.

Cling to the past???
Yes, your team has been doing that for...
ONE HUNDRED YEARS!!!

Again, this doesn't make sense.
How could Cubs fans "cling to the past"? Our team hasn't won the World Series in...um...how long is it again? I wish someone would remind me of this number more often.
If anything, we cling to the future. Logic, my friends. Logic.

typical cub fan
lets see....other than the cubs and the d-rays....every team clings to the past in some way or another. Cub fans can cling to the future all they want but the sad sad truth for all cubbie fans is we all know what your future holds....cub fans just refuse to accept the logic. Here is logic...logic tells us for the past X number of years the cubs will eventually lose without winning a world series....plain and simple. Thank the good lord above I am not a cub fan.

Logic?
You don't need logic to know that the Cardinals are fielding a Triple-A team at best come Monday. This is the big leagues, not the minor leagues. Perhaps if LaRussa and upper mgt would stop bickering about who has control of your team, someone will address your obvious lack of talent. You can count the days until your savior, Carpenter, returns, but even a Cy Young winner won't be able to help your team gain 20 games in the standing in 2 months. Have fun battling the Pirates for the cellar and playing the underdog role all season long.
I'm kind of a big deal

AAA team?
Maybe a AAA rotation...but the lineup looks pretty solid aside from the DP combo. The bench should be strong. And the bullpen should be one of the best in the majors especially when Perez and Motte come up.
