A Marte?

I was advocating pursuing Carlos Quentin after last season. 2nd pick in the fiirst round of the 2003 draft but had fallen out of favor in Arizona. Considered the heir apparent to Shawn Green in RF for the Diamondbacks, Quentin never did claim the job and fought injury problems in 2007 if memory serves.

On December 3rd, 2007, Quentin was traded to the Chicago White Sox for minor league first baseman Christopher Carter, who played for the low class A Kannapolis Intimidators in 2007 and was considered one of the best White Sox prospects. Not sure what we could have offered Ari to get him, but I thought it was worth a shot.

What I'm getting at here is it seems Andy Marte is following the same path.  Considered the Braves 3b of the future, he never was able to grab the job, primarily because of some guy named Chipper. Traded to Boston, then again to Cleveland Now there is talk he has fallen out of favor with the Indians as well.

Seems like he's exactly the kind of player the Cards should take a chance on.Talented, very good defensively, can swing the bat. But for various reasons, injuries, etc., hasn't been able to get the PT to stick with a big club.

Asked to review Andy Marte's spring performance thus far, manager Eric Wedge said, "He's had good days and bad days."

This from Rotowire.com:
Marte is out of options, so the Indians must either keep him on the 25-man roster, trade him or risk losing him on waivers. The one-time prospect has seen his stock drop dramatically over the past couple years and has not impressed during camp. "I think he's been a little tentative defensively," Wedge said. "He's shown signs offensively. I want to see him be more consistent with his offense and defense." Other than that, he's been great.

Wonder what it would take to get him and where he would slot on the 3b depth chart. Sounds like a perfect "buy low" candidate to me.

Well, he did hit 2 HRs on Friday

with 6 RBIs, but here is the question: Is he limited to 3B? The Cardinals don't have a roster spot for him if he doesn't clear waivers.

That works

if Izturis is cut. Otherwise, the position player roster would be crowded with 5 OF, 2 Catchers and Pujols, Glaus, Izturis, Kennedy, Miles and Ryan. LaRussa carries 13 pitchers, right?

Another toss-up?

Looks like Carlos Quentin might not "claim a job" with the White Sox either. Unless its with their AAA team. If not for Conar Jackson, Chris Carter might be bound for the big leagues, maybe the D-backs got the better deal?

Marte, mixed in with unsung prospect Allen Craig (according to John Sickels) and David Freese might make for extra competition, tho I would'nt count Craig or Freese out.

Like the thought

It's always nice to pull another guy who seemingly hasn't met his potential into the system, especially one who's still kinda youngish at 24.

But looking at Marte's numbers, I see some real red flags as for whether or not this guy can be a viable major leaguer. Last year, he hit only .147 against right handers at AAA, and his career major league OBP is all of .268.

With the Indians looking down the barrel of losing him through the waiver process, if they're willing to take an even more marginal prospect in exchange, I think it might be worth it. But at this stage of his career, I'm not convinced that Marte is so much better than Craig or Freese to be worth much more.

J Sickels talks about Marte.....

Go check out what John has to say. He too thinks Marte might be serviceable, but has tempered his expectations somewhat.

marte

i think he peaked around 22 instead of 27 like most guys. obviously i'm sure he can still be serviceable but i wouldn't give up a whole lot to get him.
