Brian Barton

Does anyone really want Skip Schumaker as the starting right fielder on opening day?

Mr. Barton has been tearing it up and there may not be a player that I'm more excited to see play every day once the season starts (only because of Albert's injury).

Here's hoping that Barton's knee continues to hold up and Bravo to the personnel department for snagging him in the Rule 5 Draft.

Opening Day

We face a lefty on opening day. Schumacher will not be starting...

Nickel

I was probably to confident in that assesment after Skip started against Glavine today, but I still think it will be Ankiel, Barton and Ludwick. I'm probably only 60/40 sure though.

You may want to change this to left-field

Chris Duncan most certainly won't be starting against a lefty on Opening Day and Brian Barton seems ticketed for left-field because the Cardinals are concerned with his defensive abilities.

It can still be over Skippy (Ankiel in CF, Ludwick in RF) but he will play mostly LF this year, I would assume.

I'm more concerned by the fact that Brad Thompson has been given the Wednesday start in Spring Training, which would ticket him for a start in the first week of the season.

I hope this is only in replacement of Pineiro and not Anthony Reyes.

At this point I'd rather see

a Brian Barton in both left and right on opening day, if two were available.

by StanTheManFan on Mar 16, 2008 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no way this should be a battle for right...

I think it will be Barton in LF, Ankiel in CF, and Ludwick in RF. I have a feeling Duncan could land on the DL if he doesn't start to hit, which could ultimately lead to us seeing a lot of both Barton and Skip in the same lineup if both continue to hit.

Barton's arm

Haven't seen him throw. What's the problem? Strength, accuracy, release? Is it Juan Pierre bad, or can he get by in right?

by random on Mar 16, 2008 2:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I have watched closely

and got a look at several Barton throws. They are weak and always fade off to the right off line. Which to me says he is having some soreness in his arm. I don't know if he has injured his arm or it is just spring soreness. I could never throw well in Spring cool weather without soreness and hopefully Barton's is just soreness, though it is possible he has injured his arm.. Whatever, I don't think it is that he is just naturally weak armed.

Thanks for the scouting

I follow your take! As a teenager, I would pronate on outfield throws when my elbow hurt from throwing sliders. Ball would drift right, then flutter down like a leaf. Didn't hurt nearly as much as cutting straight through the ball w/ the fingers.

I'll second that

More important to have a strong arm in right and speed in center. Only makes sense to me.

If Barton makes the team, thats a big plus period! Especially after TLRs anti-spin on his arm strength. With the pulled muscle I predicted for retiree Jaun Gone, I'd say Barton makes the team now.

The fact that you said "do we really" want etc etc...has me wanting to support Schmacher, just because of the way Skips played this spring. You cant take the spring he's had away and he's had plenty of chances to fail, like him or not.

If Barton makes it to St Louis, the rest can sort itself out in April based on big league ABs and chances.

If we can't be good, can we at least be lucky?

More concerned...

about a roster spot than an Opening Day lineup spot, as well. Even after today's STL P-D story. I'll be happy if he makes the roster over washed up Juan Gone, and ecstatic if he starts in LF...

Yesterday

Skip started against a lefty. I know it's Spring Training and all, but just sayin'. He's been a decent leadoff hitter so far too.

I'm thinkin'

Barton makes the team over Gonzalez... the five outfielders going north will be Barton, Skip, Duncan, Ankiel, and Ludwick. Colby starts the season in Memphis, getting bunches of ABs.

Assuming Izturis and Kennedy both make the club (which I think will happen, whether we like it or not,) my guess is that Miles and Ryan go north. If Duncan starts the season on the DL, that gives Mather the chance to start the year with the big club.

Am I missing anybody? LaRue's the backup catcher, and I don't see any Spiezio-equivalent (with the possible exception of Mather) on the current roster...

I said it in the game thread yesterday...

There is simply no logical way that Brian Barton does not make the team. Cleveland said they will take him back if he's not on the Major League roster. He has to be on this team, the potential this guy has... he has to be on the team.

I know Tony may be scared to have a player with some base running potential out on the field, what's new may sometimes be scary, but I think it's a risk he'll have to take.

This outfield

Is some much stronger than last year at this time. I am very excited about the differant combinations. I would like to see Skip start every single day. I would hope he continues to play over his head. This way he can build value for his coming trade. Skip will have to be moved (baring injuring) to make room for Rasmus. If Schumaker flames out we have 3 others who can play CF. Duncan should start the season on the DL. This will give him time to work out what ever it is that is ailing him. Follow that up with a minor league rehab asignment. Hopefully he get his shit together by the end of April. With Chris on the DL this makes room for Gonzalez. If Duncan goes north with the team then Juan has to go. Taking him over Barton would be criminally insane. The outfield 5 on opening day COULD be Barton, Skip, Rick, Ludwick and Juan Gone. It is fun to think of all the combinations. Anyway once Duncan gets his stroke back there will be a decision to make. Does he or Gonzalez get moved?

I really hope that Izzy2 is let go, and Ryan gets the job. Adam has his job back and Miles is the MI back up. This would make room for a guy like Mather to be on the 25 man roster.

The Lohse signing also makes the roation permutations look interesting. How about this?

Wainman, Lohse, Pinero, Welley, Thompson. When Clement is ready Thompson joins Looper in the pen. Joel will miss a start or two so Reyes gets them, but he is sent to Memphis. I expect Reyes to perform real well there and gain trade value. So the roation will evolve this year, and could look like this in May. Wainman, Mulder,Clement, Lohse, PInero. WOW! That Could be awsome. The depth will be amazing with Looper, Thompson, and Welley in the pen, and Reyes in Memphis. With all these wounded starters coming back it will make the pen a complicated place as well, and there is still Carpenter to make room for.

I think there will be enough depth on this team to make some moves at the deadline. Maybe Pinero and Schumarker get packaged for a SS, or something along those lines.

This team has a lot to optimistic about. Even if you are not excited about the prospects of the team as a whole there are individuals to watch. Several young arms, and young outfielders will make the coming season very fun to watch.

by nybirdfan on Mar 16, 2008 12:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't feel as much "optimistic"

as I do "interested." I wouldn't bet any money on this team winning more than 80 games, but I like seeing all the unknown quantities and new players. And "interesting" is good enough for me.

by MdRedbirdFreak on Mar 16, 2008 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I share some of your optimism.

Except I disagree with the idea of parking Reyes at Memphis to enhance his trade value. They don't have to. He's enhanced his trade value by showing up throwing stikes this spring. Any team that wanted him but were reluctant to take him on because of his 2007 record can take heart-he was a control/command guy in the minors and 9K/1BB shows he's headed in the right direction. At this point, they risk undoing any strides he has made by demoting him. If they don't think he can work out here, or they just think they can't work with him, they need to admit that and trade him. And I'll predict the team that gets him will be very happy indeed, because as soon as he gets out from under the constant tinkering with his pitches, and the infamous checklist of things he has to do to satisfy Mr. LaRussa and make this team, and the wracking up the frequent flyer miles between St. Louis and Memphis, he's going to grow up to be just like Ted Lilly- a mini-power control pitcher prone to the long ball, but still a good pitcher. I concede I might be wrong and admit I have a bit of a Mom crush on Anthony, but I can't help but respect the way he keeps picking himself up off the floor to go another round.

If I'm right, the organization must take a good, long, hard look at themselves and at the way Mr. LaRussa and Mr. Duncan handled him from the first day he showed up in the ML-and they better do it before the next young organizational arm shows up in the ML. They stuck with Wainwright last year when he started off badly. I just can't help but wonder if Reyes might have turned it around if they had committed to sticking with him.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

Barton

I voted for Barton, but I almost feel bad voting against Skip just because I think he's turned himself into a pretty useful player. However, I'm excited about Barton and I'd like to see the Cardinals hang onto him, even if it's at Skip's expense.

Duncan

While watching games, I have a tendancy to rag on Dunc the Younger b/c of who his dad is myself. However, if you made him "Player X" instead of Chris Duncan you would choose Player X ten times out of ten over Barton, Ludwick or Skippy.

Duncan is a 20 to 25 HR hitter, .360 to .370 OBA provider, and a .300-ish EqA player. His VORP in '06 was 24.8 and 17.3 in '07 when he played with a hurt knee and then underwent surgery for his sports hernia. What's more, Dunc's FRAA is -4 for LF while Skip's is -3. Duncan has become a better OF defensively while Skip is regressing.

With a neck-in-neck FRAA, Skips offensive numbers make him the prohibitive bench player. His VORP last year was 10 and he has no HR power to speak of. He hit for a high BA last year, but if that drops down even a little, his offensive value is snuffed out.

It is worth lauding TLR for getting the maximum of production out of all of these players last season. Both Skippy and Ludwick probably produced above their heads; still, Ludwick has more upside than Skippy who is just a AAAA player. Hopefully he can get the same out of Barton, whose Minor League numbers are not all that heartening.

Of course, it's dangerous to fall in love in the spring.

Pitchers are still working on command, many go through a dead arm period in ST. Having said that, Barton has shown enough that he's worth keeping around. He has a pretty swing, speed, and looks like he has the ability to at least improve his outfield play. Give him a roster spot, and turn him loose. And I love his crazy hair and that he rocks the high socks. I wish they'd all do that-it's a much more tradtional look.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

He has me sold, too

At least as far as his sweet hairdo and tall socks go. Ya know that the Memphis squad, to a man, rocks the tall socks? I always get tickets for their entire series vs. the I-Cubs and it's cool to see an entire team going with that look.

He absolutely deserves a spot over Juan Gone and I hope he gets it. I am praying he's not another Luna.

The high socks are a throw back. My son has worn the high socks since he was 11.

The Chicago White Sox have a large number of players wearing the high socks too. That's the way the old timers did it. I wish they all would. Yay, Memphis Redbirds!

Springfield

by mynameistyler on Mar 16, 2008 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

if you're looking strictly at offensive firepower. What Duncan doesn't have are things we need. Specifically a bat to leadoff. Skip does not fit the traditional role of a right-fielder, (Larry Walker anyone?) but who then will leadoff? The name I don't hear about is Ludwick. Although he is right-handed, he does have a reverse split. He should be in this talk as well.

by OKCardsfan on Mar 16, 2008 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

I agree with your post on Duncan. For this team to be more than good Duncan will need to play a lot and produce. He has not looked good this spring but he has a better history than Barton, Ankiel, Skippy, and Ludwick. Juan is the only guy who has better career numbers than Dunc. Also Dunc has been hurt while putting up good numbers.

I have friends who are Cub fans and a couple years ago and last year they always asked, "Why in the fuck does he not play every day?" They just can't understand why TLR has not given Dunc a legit shot to prove he can't play everyday.

I would say Dunc does not get to play as much as he should. I never got the he plays more because of his dad. It's professional baseball, save that BS for little league. I think it's stupid to suggest he plays because of daddy.

by ICbirdfan on Mar 16, 2008 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

All he is good at

is hitting. And right-handers specifically. That is playing on only "one side of the ball." I think Duncan is a great option in the outfield when there is a righthander pitching for them and a sinkerballer pitching for us. Now if he could play his natural position (1b) then that changes the dynamics. I ask is it worth having a guy that will hit runners in but in the meantime give those runs back by misplaying the outfield? Or having a guy that gets on base more and driven in by others while at the same time playing respectable outfield? That's what the questions are for me.

Easy choice for me

The only positives I see with Skip is his defense and ability to lead-off.

However, I think Barton's defense will be fine and he might be better in the lead-off role with his speed. His wheels could also make up for his defensive miscues in the field. I wouldn't be surprised to see Barton start in center on days that Ankiel has off.

stolen bases

you know I really miss the days of expecting guys to steal rather than being suprised when they do. I remember when I first started watching baseball as a little guy every single time Vince Coleman, Willie McGee, or Ozzie Smith got on base the opposing team knew what was coming and could still rarely stop it. I wouldn't mind having a guy like that on the team again. I don't think Barton would be that kinda guy. I'm just saying I miss it is all.

That's a matter of opinion

At this point, I don't know what to think. Should I trust Tony? No, he thought that So Taguchi was a good defensive replacement the last 2 years. Should I trust the PD? No, they rely on what LaRussa tells them and he is in love with Skippero.

Ankiel is a natural athelete with a cannon for an arm.

Speaking of cannons for arms..

Don't forget that late this year/next year, Rasmus will be the center fielder and ankiel will most likely be the right fielder. If we can deal Duncan for some pitching help we could have a strong, young outfield next year:

LF - Barton
CF - Rasmus
RF - Ankiel

have outstanding arms in the outfield. Barton has an arm like Juan Pierre, which is only slightly better than my mom's. Unfortunately, I've never seen Colby try to throw someone out, so I have no idea about his arm.
