The photo that appeared in Sports Illustrated that showed the 'best team money could buy'.
Oddly enough,, that photo does not match the cover.
Anyways, the inside flap (which ended with Brock and put Ceppy on down on the inside of the fold) read:
The Highest Paid Team in Baseball History
Maris $75,000
McCarver $60,000
Gibson $85,000
Shannon $40,000
Brock $70,000
Cepeda $80,000
Flood $72,500
Javier $45,000
Maxvill $37,500
Schoendienst $42,000

$607,000
And then the article inside was about how Red handled 'the egos of the moneymen' and how Bing dealt with the criticism of Dal Maxvill making $38k.

for the fanpost section
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

Love the photo
I've considered absconding with the framed version in Shannon's restaurant, but I figure Mike could kick my butt on a bad day, so I'm better off not even trying...

Thanks for posting this...
...what wonderful memories. Now if you will follow up with some Musial era , Gas House Gang and some from the 1926 World Champs pics.
You may send an outline of my new assignment to the mental ward at Charity Hospital. The solicitious nuns and psychiatrists there can help me decipher it between shock treatments.

Wasn't that
the amazing million-dollar lineup? I'm just fishing through my memory for this, but I think that was the notable thing about that startling lineup, that their salaries combined to add up to an astounding million dollars. SI cover story. I can't remember whether it appeared in 1967 or 1968. Incredible to think the Cards had the highest payroll in the majors at one time.
Gotta love those sweaters.
I believe the revelation that the Cards' lineup cost a million dollars was an embarrassment to Mr. Busch. He was not happy. (And maybe that contributed to the tough Carlton negotiations that followed in the next year or so, and the disastrous resulting trade.)

Shows what I know
I don't think all the type that appears there now was there when I posted, or maybe I just ripped past it somehow. Obviously I misremembered how much that lineup earned in salary.
Don't mind me.

It wasn't
I put it there and I thought I replied with something else but apparently not.
In order to get it to show up in an understandable table, I had to put it in the blurb.
