Welcome to the new Viva El Birdos and SB Nation
[Wow ---- 5:30 a.m. CDT and we already have 15 comments. That's good ---- feedback is key. We are the 3rd site to migrate over, and there are still 27 MLB sites to go, and then ~150 sites in the other sports, so the development team needs to hear your opinions and experiences regarding the new site and the migration. So please read the intro post by Trei, cruise around the new site, and post your opinions in the comments thread. If you find bugs or other problems, report them! We'll have a regular post in the main column tomorrow; if you want to put up a diary (no, I mean "Fan Post"], go for it. You can also e-mail me offline ---- vivaelbirdos AT yahoo DOT com. ---- LB]
Hello VEBbers,
Today is the big day. We've switched your community over to the new SB Nation sports blog platform. My name is Trei and I'm one of the guys who helped build this new home for y'all. I'm here to help you get adjusted and give you a quick tour of what is new and what has changed. Also, if you have questions or trouble with the new system, I'll be around to answer them and point you in the right direction.
Before we get started, I want to let you know that you're one of the first blogs in the SB Nation family to make this transition. We still consider this a beta platform so don't be surprised if you find a few bugs or if everything isn't exactly right yet. In fact, we hope you'll take the time to report any problems you encounter. All you need to do is email bugreport@sbnation.com.
Lets get started...
What Has Changed
SB Nation network accounts (the big change)
Many people across all of our blogs told us they wanted one account that they could use on any SB Nation blog. We agreed and have created one SB Nation network account so that you only have to login once to gain access to many blogs. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to participate on all of your blogs. However, we didn't want to encourage everyone to start visiting rival team blogs and creating flame wars. To maintain the friendly confines of your communities we ask that you explicitly join each blog you want to actively participate on. It's an easy 2-click process, but it means accepting the different community guidelines that each blog manger sets out. Just as you join each blog individually, you can be banned on each blog individually.
To make this work, we're requiring that everyone create a new SB Nation network account. Don't worry - you won't lose all of your old comments and diaries. We have created a simple process for you to claim your old blog account. In most cases you should be able to keep your old username, but a few of you may have to choose something new. The reason is that every other community in SB Nation will be going through this same transition and some of them have the same username that you do. We tried to be as fair as possible about deciding who gets to keep which name using a formula that takes into account length of membership, amount of activity and how recently you've been active. The important thing is that whatever name you have will be retroactively put on all of your old comments and diaries. Some of you already have multiple accounts on different SB Nation blogs; we've got you covered too because you can claim more than one old blog account.
Alright, now that I've explained all that - let's get you started:
Click Here to claim your old blog accounts and create a new SB Nation network account.
FanPosts (the section formerly known as Diaries)
First we changed their name. Why? Because we took this major upgrade as an opportunity to leave behind some vocabulary we inherited that never made much sense for a sports blog. SB Nation is the network of, by and for *fans* and these are the blog *posts* we make. So we called them FanPosts. Next time you're at the bar and you're telling someone to go check out your opinion about the latest trade, you don't have to suggest they read your diaries.
But the changes go deeper than the new name. FanPosts are displayed differently on the homepage - they now include your avatar so you get more credit for the time you invest in writing great posts. We also built a new editor that has a WYSIWYG view for easy formatting and auto-saving of drafts so you don't have to worry about losing your work when you write on the web. And in addition to adding basic tags, you can now associate teams, players and games with our special auto-complete tools. These will put your FanPosts on our new team, player and game pages - across the entire network.
The new system does not work like the old diary editor. For example, if you're writing in HTML mode we do not auto-detect paragraphs from line breaks. Look for the blinking help button on the right side of the FanPost editor for quick tips or take a look at our full guide to writing FanPosts on the new platform.
IMPORTANT - if you write your posts in Microsoft Word or some other off-line editor, you will get the most reliable behavior if you cut & paste your post into the HTML view of the FanPost editor. And if you do that, remember that you have to put the <p></p> tags around each paragraph you want so your text doesn't run together.
What Is New
Schedule, Scores, Stats and Roster
Viva El Birdos now has all the basic information about the Cardinals and every other team in the MLB. During games you'll see a regularly updated line score, as the season progresses we'll track team stat totals and leaders. This is just our first step so look for us to publish more detailed and archival stats in the future. The best part about all this sports data is that we've integrated it directly into the blog so now we special pages that will aggregate all the blog posts written about games, players and teams.
Auto-refreshing Comments
You no longer need to refresh the page to see new comments. If you're logged in, new comments will automatically appear on the page every few seconds. When you post a comment, the page will not refresh either. If you want to quickly cycle through all the new comments, you can press the 'c' key on your keyboard. If you're cycling through the comments you can just press the 'r' key to reply. And there are other helpful keyboard shortcuts like that listed at the top of each comments section.
Recommending Comments
Now you can reward those folks who take the time to look up stats and make smart arguments in the comments. Next to each comment there is an 'actions' link that you can click to find the recommend and flag options.
Flagging Comments
To help the moderators on a site, we've built-in tools that let you flag comments that are spam, trolling or just plain inappropriate. No one else can see those flaggings, but the moderators can.
FanShots
Many members of the community just want to post that one link, video, photo or quote and you don't need to write a full FanPost. We've got you covered and we made these quick hits really easy. Now you have a tool that is designed for sharing YouTube videos, Flickr or PhotoBucket photos, quotes from articles, portions of chat transcripts, top 5 lists and simple links. If it's a video or image we'll put a thumbnail on the homepage when you post it.
For those of you who are experienced internet hunter and gatherers of Cardinals material, install the bookmarklet to share FanShots with the community from wherever on the web you find that killer quote or photo.
Archives
It's much easier to go find that post about a certain deadline trade or a playoff game. Browse by year and month.
Avatars
When you upload an image as your avatar we'll use it on your profile, your FanPosts and all your comments.
Network profiles
Now that we have unified SB Nation network accounts, your profile will be the central hub for all of your activity on any blogs you're a member of.
Network bar
The bar up at the top will stay with you on all SB Nation blogs. It's a quick way to login and logout. When you're logged in, you'll see your avatar and screen name. Click that and you'll find your profile. There is a button next to that for jumping to your dashboard with links for editing your settings, profile, account and any FanPosts or FanShots you've published. Once we add more blogs to the new SB Nation network, the My Blogs menu will be a handy way of navigating between the blogs you're a member of.
There are plenty more small changes and additions we've made so take a careful look around and explore this new system.
We appreciate your patience as we jump into this beta together and know you'll help us get this new platform ready for all the other SB Nation blogs.
And in case you missed it, you'll want to start with this:
Click Here to claim your old blog accounts and create a new SB Nation network account.

Interesting look
A couple first impressions:
1. I find the default avatar (the guy with the mouth agape with a backwards baseball cap) really, really annoying. Just reminds me too much of the drunk, loudmouth sports jerk stereotype that I can't stand.
2. Not sure I like the massive maroon bars down the side. Too reminiscent of 1980's Phillies colors for me.
3. The Fanpost enhancements seem to be a huge improvement over the old diary system, although I suppose it will take a while to see how it all plays out.

Hmmmm....
Is there anyway to make it use more of the screen? I've got a widescreen monitor (1440x900) and basically half the screen is being wasted. The old VB would expand automatically to the width.

I didn't get a bigger one. Monitor technology has far surpassed computer and internet technology. In fact, this seems to be a depressing thread - more and more fixed (tiny) size sites, instead of variable ones.

Change = hard

I agree about the vertical gray bars on the sides, however...that's a LOT of wasted real estate. Any chance of tweaking that?

go to the very top of the screen, where it says "my blogs," and click on that --- it'll give you access to all the other SBN sites.

I Love The New Features
Will take a few to get used to, but the site IMHO needed an upgrade on a number of different levels to make it as functional as is possible in their Web 2.0 world. Also like I'll be able eventually to work with all three of the SB Nations sites through one log-in/setting screen. I'll also be very interested to see how the schedule, roster, stats, and news sections work. I mean if you want to keep me here and get more page views this is a sure fire way to do this.
About the only downside I see as a few others have mentioned, is I'd like to be able to expand the width of the page. But I guess you can't have everything.

just go here: http://www.sbnation.com/account/migrate_accounts
choose Viva El Birdos
put in your old username and password
click add to claim list, then continue
so even though you lost your username, you don't lose everything you did on VEB

If the extra space in the sides is really bothering you, just reduce the browser window to match the site, then use all that extra space for multi-tasking. That's why you bought the big ol' wide-screen monitor, right? ;)

Viewing All Fan Posts...
I like the idea but not the function.
It would be easier if it showe the posts by headers not the entire post. You have to scroll tthrough to much print and after about 4 or 5 of these entire posts it gets tedious.

you can set this preference
in your user settings.
every page has a link to Edit Settings. the Expand/Collapse comments is on the first settings screen.
is that what you mean? you can also set this per page, at the top of the comments.

HTML in sigs was being abused with images, etc and was getting crazy on some blogs. instead of making bloggers moderate that we just strip HTML, give you the option of an avatar and let you put a link on your profile.
I'll never say never about changes, but this one is unlikely.

gdm426, you've sold us on allowing links
The SB Nation dev team had a discussion about this, and after we fed Trei some bacon and gave it some thought, we're down with allowing links in sigs. You should be able to link a website, for sure.
Most of the sig problems have been with images and scripts anyway. Thanks for speaking up on this! look for the changes to be deployed later tonight.

Excellent support!
I don't use a URL in my sig, but I wanted to just chime in and say you guys are doing a terrific job of taking in the feedback and trying to accommodate all of the users. The migration went VERY smoothly (grats on that, too, btw), and kudos to all of you at SB Nation for working with the feedback to further improve the site.

I'm thrilled that I don't have to use the subject line
but one thing that I'm already struggling with is how subtle the difference is between old comments and new. The faint yellow tinge and the line being yellow vs. gray took me quite a while to even notice.
It's aesthetically pleasing to look at but when I'm trying to quickly browse the new comments (with the cool new C-button browsing) it doesn't register in my brain fast enough as "new comment". I wind up a little disoriented looking for a more distinct visual indicator of which comment is actually new.
That may just be me though. . .
Huge kudos, constructive criticism aside, because the site is not only highly functional but it is visually clear and compelling. The visual component, rather than just being some nice slap on thought at the end, aids in distinguishing different parts of the blog and their function. It has a very slick feel to the whole thing and looks less blocky than the previous layout.

I really like the new comments system. Simply pressing c to cycle through new comments is much easier than using find:new on the old system. It's fantastic that they automatically update, that'll save a lot of clicks on the ol' refresh screen come game time.
My only real complaints are purely aesthetic. The red is too maroon--makes it looks like a Phillies blog or something. And the avatars are a nice touch, but they're so dreadfully small.

Migration issue?
I was clicking around, because I always like see how long it takes me to break new things, and I clicked on the tag link (the original el birdos) on the left side of the main page. I went to the second linked entry (this one) and was reading through it.
Towards the end, one of the bullet points reads "this comment still cracks me up." and it should link to an old comment by a username Solanus. It was the 666th comment on that thread and it made self-reference to that fact. I don't see that comment in the thread anymore which makes me wonder if it got lost in the migration or something. All the comments are migrated over from the old platform even if the users haven't claimed their new account correct?
This could be nothing (read: isolated incident) but I thought I'd bring it up anyway. It also could have something to do with the fact that the comment entry links appear to have changed (i.e. they aren't specific to individual posts but to the blog itself).
(Note: To whoever has to figure out what I'm talking about, I hope I didn't ruin your day. Tracking possible software bugs is never fun -- I know firsthand -- so I tried to be as specific as possible.)

Also, another site suggestion
with the fanposts something that I wished would have happened with the diaries is that if a diary gets a 'new post', it gets bumped up to the top of the list. So, if the fanpost about Rasmus getting called up gets a reply, it moves to the top.
Just an idea.

Well let me amend that
I looked again and the comment is there (I was having a loading delay messing with something else and killed the page load but forgot about that) but the links to past comments aren't functional.
So the link is:
http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/comments/2007/6/20/18278/9119/666#666
in the post when it should be:
http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/comments/2007/6/20/18278/9119/666#1413659
I don't have any idea if the intention was to convert old links in posts to the new permalink situation but the initial "bug" I was talking about was me trying to do multiple things at once and not paying attention to what I was doing on any one thing.

That's correct
All of the old comments were migrated over properly, but we're not recognizing the old style comment permalinks, and we should be. I've identified the source of the problem; we'll release the fix sometime over weekend.

Hurts my eyes
I have poor eyesight to begin with, even with my progressive lenses, and due to the very small print on the sight, I always have to increase the font size two-fold at the least. Now, though, I think I'll have to revert to the 800x600 display just to read this stuff.

smooth transition
The transition was a piece of cake. I've been looking forward to the new design since it came out over at Athletics Nation. I do agree with the comments about the color. If its a sports team blog, at the very least the colors should be right, and this is not cardinal red. Its more like USC Cardinal. Which is a color I personally don't mind....but not on my Cardinals blogs.
Also...big fan of the live auto update, so you don't repeat a comment that gets made while you're typing.
If STL ownership couldn't retool the team as well as we might have liked, at least SB Nation has given us a nice shiny new blog to enjoy for the season!

The sidebar isn't updating the new comments
for this thread.
When I check the sidebar, it says there are no new posts for this thread and it is at , lets say, 138 posts. When I click on this thread, it says there are 3 New posts and a total of 141 posts.
So, unless I click on this, it doesn't tell me someone posted something new.

So far I'm loving the site. Takes a while longer to load on my old computer, but not snail like. Are you taking suggestions too? What about adding salary, or contract or when they're a free agent on the Roster page? It would be a great resource and LB wouldn't have to keep putting the matrix together? The new board
I really like the new board so far, the fanpost section seemingly gives more freedom for posting without flooding out popular topics.

the better i like it.
but again, i do have a widescreen monitor and the layout only covers about half of it. i'd like to see the center strip (with the main posts) be expanded.

Noticed something
The *[code]* (change the [ to <) html tag no longer works in making comments, which makes it impossible to format a list of information. Like this:
Maris $75,000
McCarver $60,000
Gibson $85,000
Shannon $40,000
Brock $70,000
Cepeda $80,000
Flood $72,500
Javier $45,000
Maxvill $37,500
Schoendienst $42,000

i'm guessing that is because
the comment editor doesn't have an html option. or at least, it doesn't seem to have one. trei, can we add that option to the comment editor?

sigh
i had high hopes for the new digs, and so far i've been let down. i almost feel bad for being the only guy to bitch about everything. i said almost. you asked for some feed back, so here you go.
the color is simply awful. i thought this was a ST LOUIS CARDINALS BLOG? where's my Cardinal Red color?
the yellow color behind comments looks horrible. and what's with all the black? i ask again, were is my Cardinal Red?
i've got a 20 inch Dell monitor, and half the screen is empty. is there any way to fix that?
there's still no damn EDIT button. WTF? i've been asking for an edit button for YEARS.
i HATE having to hit the PREVIEW button. what happens in the middle of the season when an ump blows a call & i want to say something real quick and i can't because of the damn preview button? fix that if you would please. i'm not joking. i'm dead serious. thats almost a deal breaker for me.
losing the link to my blog really pisses me off. it's not a porn pic, it's not even a blog with foul language. there's just stuff i want to say on here that i don't feel comfortable saying, so i say it there. and if the link is gone from my sig here, then my viewer ship is gone. almost all the traffic to my blog is from VEB. and now you've taken that away from me & i don't like it or appreciate it one bit.
the avatar's are too small. what's the point in having one if you can't tell what it is?
so far i do not like this change. i know it had to happen, but there's a lot of new stuff here that i really don't like. part of what made the old site so fun & enjoyable was it's pureness & it's simplicity. it's going to take a long, LONG time to get used to everything new here. and to be honest with you, i don't know if i've got that much time & energy.
why is there never a puppy around when you really need one?

all good points.
Hey gdm426, thanks for all the feedback. Our hope is that in time y'all will get more comfortable with the new digs, as we incorporate feedback and deploy changes. Here's a couple of notes:
Colors: we worked with lboros to choose the color scheme, and recently changed the background from maroon to black, and this morning from black to the blue in the Cardinal's logo. Hopefully that's a step in the right direction. We think the cardinal color works well for the sports widgets and title bar. Also, the yellow only appears on new comments. Press Z to scroll through new comments and mark them as read.
Width / layout: you're not the first to comment on the width question, to be sure :) If you poke around, the most popular blogs (and sites like the New York Times) use a similar fixed-width page layout because they find that it's easier on their readers for scanning and reading. I use the real estate of my 24" monitor to open multiple programs or browser windows. You don't find it hard on your eyes and neck to read across the full width of the monitor?
Edit Button: Do you mean an edit button for comments?
Preview Button: give this a try for a little while. A lot of our users are finding that it helps them check how things will look, and helps avoid posting mistakes. Note that while posting a comment you can hit the TAB button to jump down to the "Preview" button. Hit ENTER once to preview and again to post. You never need to touch your mouse.
Sig HTML - as I mentioned elsewhere, you sold us on allowing links in sig files. We'll be deploying that feature later tonight.
Avatars - We used to have them more prominent, but it bothered a lot of users. Our hope is that the current position allows you to scan them while keeping them out of the way of the comment content.
Lastly, here is my puppy, Alfie. I hope he helps make everyone a little more comfortable. Thanks for your patience - VEB is only the 4th community to be migrated.

love the puppy,
but clearly you didn't read my sig. i was in a pretty grouchy, old fart mood last night, so i'm glad you didn't take any of my bitching personally.
thanks again for allowing links in sigs. i really appreciate it. i promise to not abuse that privilege.
i had such a problem with the yellow color on all the comments yesterday because it was the first time i read the page, and they were all in yellow. all 185. it was really brite & was a bit much. but once i made my post i saw the yellow was gone, it was no longer a problem. so i can totally live with it now. and the away blue is fine in my book as well.
which leads back to my edit button question. when i say edit button, yes i mean after you've made the comment & something has changed & you would like to go back & fix it. like the yellow colors behind the comments i made. had there been an edit button, i could have gone back & said "NEVER MIND, I'M AN IDIOT." and you would have known to ignore that part of my post.
can you at least make the avatar's a little bigger? they are so small.
i can live with half the screen being blank. it just seams like a waste of space to me. besides from my laptop, the space is much smaller. so it's a non issue for me if i'm on the site with the laptop like i am now. but like i said, it just seams like a waste of space. if some one came up with a good idea to fill that space would you all be up to listening to their ideas? i'm sure with all the brilliant minds on VEB, someone could come up with something to put there.
i want to thank you again for not taking my old farting ways of last night personally. i really appreciate all the work everyone is doing to make this the best site out there for the us Cardinals fans. i can assure you i'm only 30, not 85 like i sounded last night. and i'm not going anywhere & i'm more than willing to put up with a few growing pains. thank you again for listening to my ranting & taking the time to comment back. i really appreciate it that you are willing to take some criticism & then make some changes. now if i have any more complaints, i'll be sure to let you all know & not be afraid of offending anyone. i really do appreciate all the hard work that everyone is doing. thanks again for listening, and thanks again for putting in all the work to make VEB awesome.

oh noes!
Wow, apparently I really don't look at sig files. Alfie would be none too pleased that I volunteered him for an online kicking.
You're actually the first person who's requested a Edit button since we started rolling out SBNation 2.0 sites. We tried to focus on Preview to encourage folks to check their work before they post. We'll share some of our reasoning for not including Edit buttons in the near future. If it's a frequent enough request we'll definitely take another look.
It's funny, some users have requested that we make avatars smaller, or that they be removed altogether. At some point we may implement a user setting for this. Noted for sure.
As you said, there are sure to be more growing pains coming. We definitely appreciate the feedback and criticism, and we don't take your Old Farting Ways personally... but we know that stuff like this is personal. We basically came in and re-arranged what for maybe people feels like their living room or an after-work watering hole, and that's personal stuff. We're all sports fans, bloggers and longtime members (and builders) of web communities, and we're going to help VEB (and each of the other SBN communities) kick ass in its own way.
Just give us a little time :-)

Hey I wouldn't actually kick Alfie,
just don't let him any where near Brad after he has a bad outing!
i've been "yelling" about the edit button mostly in my in game comments since 05, so i've never actually filed an "official" request for the EDIT option. i think it would be a great addition to the new site & a very helpful tool to use. i can see it mostly being used if you screw up a phrase or spelling of a word & don't want to go back & reply to it. i think it would be a big space saver in a lot of instances. just my two cents.
if there was a way to sit it up that each person could have avatar's on, or off, and then if they have them on decide what size they would like them, i think that might be the move. but i totally understand if that's too hard to do or simply can't be done. it just seams to me that if you are going to have them, you should have them at a size that everyone can tell what they are. right now, they are just too small.
lastly, in defense of my "old farting ways". i had just spent 5 hours on the side of the road with a broken down truck most of the night on Saturday. so i was really not in the mood to come to my old stomping grounds & not recognize the neighborhood. it's all good now & i'm really glad i didn't offend anyone. i honestly am starting to like the new look & get used to all the new bells & whistles. so thanks to you & everyone else for all their hard work getting the site redone off the ground.
thanks again for listening, and thanks again for all the hard work.
rest assured, little Alfie is safe.

I've had some posts disappear
in the 'Do you like the colors' thread, I posted something about the text needed to be changed from yellow because it looked like McDonalds and then the post disappeared when I came back later.
Also, last night in my FanPhoto thread, another post about how I updated the photo description disappeared.

One small thing I noticed...
When composing a REPLY to an existing comment, when you hit the "preview" button, the new comment apparently does not preview as being aligned/indented one level further in. During the preview, it appears to be aligned at the same level as the comment you are replying to, rather than one level to the right. This behavior was specifically exhibited when I replied to the comment by sixfoot6 on Mar 16, 2008 3:03 PM CDT, above. (Also, as a "root" comment rather than an indented reply, the alignment of this post looked normal during the preview.)
Note that once I actually posted the reply, it lined up properly...but the preview alignment might confuse some posters who want to make sure they are replying to the correct comment. I don't know if it is something you can tweak, but you might give it a look.
Keep up the excellent work! (I wish all of my migrations went as smoothly as this one!)

Great work by the IT group on all of these issues
I know I sound like a complainer, so I wanted to tell you that you guys have done a great job of fixing what small problems exist and listening to our comments about them.
A little glitch I noticed, I don't believe the 'C' tabbing down to new posts works in threads that have polls in them. It works great in every thread but I can't seem to get it to function in the Brian Barton Fanpost.
Great work!

One problem with the new board
I don't think it should be mandatory to preview a post before you make it.
I'm not questioning the purpose of the preview feature itself and definately feel it should still be available to use. However, for those of us who use HTML regularly, it's not fun to go through another step before posting.
Just nit picking, I know. ;)
