"Allstar 2B?" part II

Okay. So maybe the Barton at 2B thing is a little far fetched. It's still spring and I have yet another proposal to fix the kink we have in this team at 2B.

No disrespect to Kennedy but maybe we can spin him to Colorado or DFA him in hopes someone else will take a shot on him.

To replace him why don't we get Brian Roberts from the O's.

We have plenty of talented OF's that can play defense.

Let Duncan go somewhere he can be more of an asset and play everyday wether it be LF, 1B or DH.
Send him along with Reyes. If they need one or two more minor leaguers just do it as long as they are not asking for prime prospects. Maybe include Hoffpauir since we won't need him if we get Roberts.

Duncan, Reyes, Hoffpauir, B level pitching prospect = Brian Roberts.

Is it worth it?

Roberts is signed through '09 for 14.3 million total. If you want him after that you'll probably have to give a 4-5 year contract to a 32 year-old free agent, which probably won't end well. So really you're just getting him for two years, and this year we aren't going to contend anyway. That should make him less valuable to the Cardinals than to a team that thinks they have a legit shot at the playoffs this year, like the Cubs. This team needs to be getting younger, not older.

Roberts
There was a time........believe it or not, the O's at one point a couple of years ago were trying to decide between Jerry Hairston Jr or Roberts as their second baseman.....I was screaming to send anyone to Baltimore for our new leader hitter and 2b.....Walt probably tried as well......the O's did a rare thing by making a smart move and flipping Hairston to the Cubs......where I believe Roberts will end up as well, in exchange for some Small Bear pitching

Roberts
This would solve the leadoff and 2b problem.  Once I heard that Roberts was possibly available, I thought the Cardinals should acquire him.  He steals bases, which means more fastballs to the #2 hitter...It makes complete sense.

Brian Roberts
Well, I like Roberts a lot he is a good player.  But like the guy above said we would have to sign him for probably a 4-5 year deal.  Acquiring him would definitely fill the hole at 2B even if its just temporary.  I am skeptical of this deal...maybe.

Was reading MLBTradeRumors....
And saw Ryan Freel and Marcus Giles could both be traded.  We wouldn't have to give up as much then the trade with Roberts.  Either one would be better then our current 2B duo.
Freel had problems against lefties last year but he is still an upgrade on who we have.
Giles hasn't hit much since 05 but again he would probably be better than what we have.  Giles might actually be pretty cheap to acquire.

I am not advocating acquiring these players but it might be worthwhile to look into it.

Marcus Giles
What happended to that guy?  Just goes to show you that 2B age poorly.  I remember someone posting on how 2B age poorly.

He had great minor league numbers and his MLB numbers were not bad.

Who knows.

Giles
It might not be that he aged bad hasnt he been playing in PNC?  That park eats hitters alive for breakfast.. maybe in a different park he might do better.  Just my two cents.

No
Turner and PacBell/SBS/AT&T/That place in SF.  Brian is the one who played in PNC.

Nope....
Your wrong Marcus never played for the Giants.  He played last year with Brian Giles in San Diego where he hit .229..
His 06 in Atl was not great by any stretch..but it was better than his 07 with San Diego.

Yeah, but still...
You're right, he never played in San Fran.  He played in Turner and PETCO, dumb moment by me.  But you're still incorrect in that he never played at PNC Park, which is in Pittsburgh.

Giles
at this point wouldn't be much better than Hoff, Kennedy, or Miles.

The only affordable 2B we could get that would be an upgrade is Belliard.

On with the (good) youth movement!

Freel
He solves 2 problems -- he can hit leadoff and he removes our shitfest at 2B from the lineup.

He creates 2 more -- he's hurt ALL the time, and he's a pretty poor second baseman by all accounts.  I'm really not sure it's worth it -- kinda depends on who we'd have to give up to a division rival.

As far as Roberts goes, I'm not in favor of that deal simply because he's 30, has been rumored to be involved with PED, and he'll be a 32 year old free agent at the end of 2009 at which point we'll have to shell out a ton of coin to keep him, and most 2B similar to him seem to drop off quickly in their mid-30's (Robby Alomar comes to mind).

He would solve the leadoff hitting problem, but trading Duncan, Reyes, and 2 minor leaguers seems like a lot to give up for a guy who's made one All-Star team and hasn't touched the power numbers from that year since.  It's not like they're getting a superstar in return -- they're getting a 30 year old second baseman with good speed and some occasional power.

It sounds stupid to me
Giving up Duncan for Roberts seems like too much to be honest.  Giving up a legit power threat from the left side for a scrappy leadoff hitter-type seems silly at all.  So basically I'm with you on this.

Your probably right...
It just seems that Duncan is the most logical outfielder to move due to his lack of defense.

Wish we had a DH that would be perfect.
