glad this wasn't us...

i'm sure everyone remembers back in november when the cards had interest in curt schilling. seemed like a lot of the community here was in favor of signing him to a 1-year deal, and even schilling was agreeable to the idea. however, things didn't progress too far beyond that as it turned out. he re-signed rather quickly with the red sox, leaving it up for debate as to whether he merely used the cards (and other interested teams) as leverage with boston.

well, if we only knew then what we know now: it looks like his shoulder is in really bad shape. could require surgery, threatening most of this season if not his career. yikes. while it's sad to see just about any player get hurt, i'm extremely thankful that it's the sox on the hook for this lost season from schilling and not the cardinals.

wow.
i was one of the biggest proponents for trying to get Schilling, even though i knew it was a long-shot.

he apparently passed a physical before Boston signed him, so i wonder what happened?

How about that
I was also all for acquiring Schilling, and his contract wasn't all that unreasonable.

Mike Hampton
Remember when we were pushing really hard to get Mike Hampton. Now that was a bullet

I bet
Mozeliak is on the phone right now with Epstein trying to see what it will take to get Schilling.

Exactly
That would put the finishing touches on our rotation, wouldn't it?  Actually, we'd probably wait until he has surgery and then sign him hoping he can regain his form.

True
Mozeliak would be banking on Dave Duncan to perform another one of his "miracles."

Its like
the Cardinals see Duncan as the MLB equivalent of the Horse Whisperer -- he's had some nice projects, but he's also had some pitchers that had to be put down

To hell with the Red Sox
If you sign a 40 year old pitcher without giving him a physical, then you open yourself up to this happening.

Nobodys fault but their own.

Suckers.

They DIDN'T give him a physical?
That's just moronic.

yes they did,
from what ive read, they either missed it or he injured himself since the physical

by FunkeeC on Feb 8, 2008 4:53 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Yup
i realized it later that they HAD in fact given him a physical.  How they overlooked this is amazing.  Granted if he "injured" it after signing the contract, the Red Sox should be able to void the deal.

Although, I have a feeling he was already hurt and they knew it, they just hoped he would be able to hold it together.  But this would just be speculation.

If the Sawx...
...Were the ones to do the physical than its not out of the question to think that he was already damaged goods.  After all, Boston's med. staff seems to think he just needs rest and rehab, while the other two have been much more gloom-and-doom.

I can't believe they knew
because they just signed a guy to a 1 year contract who might have to sit out half the year.  Doesn't sound like good business sense to me.

If they did know, then they didn't understand the severity which is completely uncalled for.  How can you not know when it's apparantly this bad?

I'm guessing whoever did the physical/evaluation and gave the "thumbs up" is sweating this one out.

by Big Red on Feb 9, 2008 7:42 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Well
My point wasn't exactly that they saw it and went "aw what the hell, pass him anyway" or something like that.  Based on the info provided by the WWL, the medical opinion of the Sawx staff is that the injury isn't so bad.  I suppose given the odd things that have happened with Paletta, it's not unreasonable that another team's med. staff screwed the pooch on this deal.

You're right though...Whoever gave the eval most definately has some questions to answer I'd imagine.
