Running GameDiary Friday 2/29 vs. Mets.

Some people were posting in the main thread about the game but I thought it might be easier to just have a seperate diary for the game today for those watching or unable to watch but wanting to follow the action.

Juan Gone hit a Home run in the first to make it 3-0 cards.

In the bottom of the first Waino gave up 2 runs and miles couldn't handle a forceout at 2nd base on a poor throw by Ryan.

Brendan Ryan
2-out triple to the left-center gap. He was trucking all the way.

Why would it be easier?
It's a spring training game.
Still looking for 1985 Regular Season games on DVD/VHS

by Hardcore Legend on Feb 29, 2008 1:42 PM EST   0 recs

to avoid a mix-up or something
Since people are commenting about it on the main thread, it seemed better to keep it seperate from the discussion about the cubs.  If you disagree, that's cool, I was just trying to help.  I also figured it would be an easy place for people to come that weren't able to see the game to find out what was going on.

I'm just super excited to have baseball back that I plan on watching this entire game.

Top of the 3rd
Looks like Johan has been scared off.  He's out and Heilman is in for the mets now.

Albert & Duncan
What did they do?

Was Juan's HR a grooved fastball?

How does Barton look?

by ICbirdfan on Feb 29, 2008 1:59 PM EST   0 recs

albert and chris
In the first Duncan got the first hit off of johan with a shallow pop-up to left.
He then moved over to Third on a double by Pujols that went between Wright and Third base.
Glaus grounded to 3rd and Duncan was thrown out at home.
Pujols and Glaus scored on the first pitch HR by Juan Gone.

Barton looks like
he could use a haircut

by ridgesee on Feb 29, 2008 7:34 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

maybe
Maybe you should tell him to get out of your yard too.

Damn kids!

MLB Gameday Applet
Anybody figure out what they're using for the URLs?  I tried a few different things but so far nothing has worked.

Brian Barton
Does anyone else think that Barton looks just like Juan Encarnacion with long hair?

by Molina4MVP on Feb 29, 2008 2:25 PM EST   0 recs

Haha
Ya, A little bit. But now ive seen barton, Im really cheering for him to make the team. We could use some cool hair on the team.

by FunkeeC on Feb 29, 2008 2:26 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I'm a strong...
proponent for Barton making this team.  He has a lot to offer.

by mynameistyler on Feb 29, 2008 2:30 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Barton.
I think they should put some bagggy pants on him and call him Manny.

by ridgesee on Feb 29, 2008 7:38 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Barton
has he done much?

by ICbirdfan on Feb 29, 2008 2:27 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

nope
Flew out to left in the first (Leading off the game), flew out to right in the second (With Ryan on third and 2 outs).
Struck out (swinging) in the top of the 5th with 1 out and Ryan on first.

He has gotten a couple of catches in the outfield.
and his hair is awesome.

by Molina4MVP on Feb 29, 2008 2:33 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

lame
right as i hit post Barton had a line drive hit his glove and bounce off.  He was running straight in and he had his glove at about his waist and it hit him right in the palm but bounced off.

by Molina4MVP on Feb 29, 2008 2:34 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Nice to see Yadi again.
He picked off the Alou's pinch runner (Fernando Martinez) for the 3rd out.  I missed his arm.

by Molina4MVP on Feb 29, 2008 2:36 PM EST   0 recs

Great to see!
Love to see Pujols extend like that right now.

by WhiteGold on Feb 29, 2008 2:37 PM EST   0 recs

He was awful in ST last year
and it carried over into April.  Be nice to see him start strong, seeing as he might not play the whole season.

by Hardcore Legend on Feb 29, 2008 2:38 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Gorgeous, even...
I realize this is a mistake (and that spring training usually means NOTHING for the regular season), but i'm starting to get cautiously optimistic about the Cardinals.

by Molina4MVP on Feb 29, 2008 2:41 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Spring Training
I think it is more important for young guys, and guys that have stuff to prove.

I am not too worried about how guys like Albert do in Spring Training.  It is meaningless to a point but it was nice to see Reyes pitch well yesterday.  It beats him pitching like crap.

I wish I could watch this game.

by ICbirdfan on Feb 29, 2008 2:52 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I didn't watch it
but still felt sweet seeing the blue dot show up on the gametracker that said "in play, run(s)" when he lead off the inning.

by ecaw1123 on Feb 29, 2008 2:44 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

i love spring training gameday
15 minutes after you guys celebrate it, i get to see the little blue dot.  guess it takes longer for the electrons to get to california...

hrumph.

by SleepyCA on Feb 29, 2008 2:50 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Spring Training - DH?
Probably a stupid question, but can anyone tell me how it is determined when a spring training game will involve a DH and when it will not?  I thought that it might be a Grapefruit vs. Cactus League thing, but looking at box scores yesterday shot down that theory.

by ChiTown CardFan on Feb 29, 2008 2:38 PM EST   0 recs

Juan Gone wearing #22
Has there ever been a more drastic change in the type of person that wears the same number from one year to the next?
Going from Eckstein wearing 22 to Juan is pretty hilarious.

by Molina4MVP on Feb 29, 2008 2:42 PM EST   0 recs

miles
he doesn't need to play the whole game, right? i mean, i've heard there are a few other halfway decent infielders we should be getting looks at....

Garcia uses smoke and mirrors
to get out of trouble.  His stuff is pretty nasty when he throws it for strikes.

by Hardcore Legend on Feb 29, 2008 3:29 PM EST   0 recs

hardcore
I don't have MLB.TV, I will tough it out.  I get FSN, ESPN, WB so I will see all the games I need this year.

What is the score?  What inning are they in?

Seems like a long game.

by ICbirdfan on Feb 29, 2008 3:35 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Sac fly just made it 5-3
Top of the 9th, 2 outs (cards batting).  It started at 12:05, so it has been on for 2 1/2 hours, it doesn't feel too long...

by Molina4MVP on Feb 29, 2008 3:38 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Jamie Garcia
definitely has major league stuff but you can see he does have some control problems. That's his only holdup as far as I can see.

by ridgesee on Feb 29, 2008 7:42 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

who is mark johnson?
and why is he batting for brendan ryan?

by SleepyCA on Feb 29, 2008 3:45 PM EST   0 recs

5-4
It's final, Cards win 5-4.

Fun fact: Ron Flores finished the 9th in 6 pitches. Popup, home run by Gotay, fly out, three swings and misses.

help us out
For those of us not lucky enough to follow this one give out some tidbits.

Who impressed?
Who looked bad?
Were there some who looked good but did not get hits?

Just curious about peoples take on the game.

by ICbirdfan on Feb 29, 2008 4:18 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

My take....
Who impressed?
-Pujols HR swing looked very good, got to a ball down in the zone and yanked it over left field wall.

-Jamie Garcia got himself out of a jam, looks like he has a pretty good curveball and the velocity on his fastball was impressive. Threw the curveball more than I thought he should.... oh yeah jamie is pronouced HIGH-mee, like the way you do in latin america.

-Mike Parisi pitched well, made Wrights knees buckle on one particular curveball.

-Rasmus' only AB was good,he battled but ended up popping out to the pitcher on a good pitch... faced Ricardo Rincon.

-Announcers commented that Juan-Gone is in good shape.

-Ludwick had a crappy day, his only hit was a routine fly ball that Brady Clark lost in the sun.

-Although Barton did not get a hit and had an error, I hope we keep him. Big frame, moves well... sweet looking swing

-Aaron Miles should quit baseball and become an accountant. Doesn't he look like an accountant?

-Phelps only hit once and looked bad.

-Amaury Marti absolutely crushed line drive base hit through the 3rd-short gap. If baseball doesnt work out for him, UFC would be a viable option.

I love watching young players... should be a fun season even if we blow.

by thewizard3 on Feb 29, 2008 4:40 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Nice
Much appreciated!

I hear ya on some guys.  I liked your take on Barton, not really doing much but it looks like there should be some upside.  I like that type of look at the game.

I think Lud should have a spot this year no matter what really happens this spring.

by ICbirdfan on Feb 29, 2008 4:48 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I think
Miles would look good in an ump's uniform. His face spells out 2B umpire.
On with the (good) youth movement!

by aet15 on Feb 29, 2008 4:50 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I guess
I was the only one a little disappointed with Barton. I thought he played a little casual..a little less enthusiasm than JD Drew. Hofpauir is a tiny little fellow, but boy he didn't waste any time putting some pop on that line drive to left field for a SF. If it hadn't been for the diving catch, it might have  been about a foot fair and gone to the wall.

by ridgesee on Feb 29, 2008 8:00 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Garcia and Rincon both wore #73
Today was my first look at Garcia. I was a little concerned that he wore #73 just like Rincon (who made $2M for throwing 1 inning for the Cardinals). Garcia looked like he was a little too amped at first, but he has good stuff. He'll need to get better control of his fastball and his curve was inconsistent. Overall, there was lot to like.

What was funny is that Rincon actually came in for the Mets right after Garcia debuted. Rincon looked better (read: healthy) than anytime with the Cardinals. I agree with another post that Rasmus battled Rincon and it was no disgrace that he made an out.

As much as I am rooting against Juan Gone, if he keeps hitting then he has to stay. On the other hand, if Ludwick doesn't have a good spring, then there is no need to keep him over Barton.

If Juan Gone continues to hit
could it be possible that he gets trade to an AL time prior to opening day?
Those Pilgrims ain't lookin' so proud now...

Is there anything more worthless
than knowing which pitcher gets the win in a spring training game?

Parisi got the win? Really? I'll make a note.

by Harknights on Feb 29, 2008 6:02 PM EST   0 recs

Did Juan hit a homer...
off of Johan? If so, it must be crazy upside-down world... Bizarro, in fact.
Rasmus or bust.

by Zoop on Feb 29, 2008 6:49 PM EST   0 recs

Not at all
small sample size not withstanding, Juan is 6/7 against Santana in his past. Not a huge suprise that he got a hit in Santana's 1st inning of ST

by FunkeeC on Feb 29, 2008 6:57 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

but it's been what?
4 years? haha. He probably got those hits off Santana as a rookie.
On with the (good) youth movement!

johan
was in 4th grade when Gonzalez was a rookie ;)

in Stantana's rookie year
Gonzalez faced him twice; two doubles... in the same game (2000, Gonzalez' only year with DET).
