I am Cursed
This post is about my memorable experiences at Busch Stadium, and how sad, depressing, and yet humorous they are. I am only 18, so I still have plenty of time to reverse the trends that I have been a part of for way too long.
Thus far, in all the time that I have been a St. Louis Cardinals fan, I have been to 11 games that I can remember, and that number is quickly rising thanks to having a family that loves baseball more than it used to. What is my record all-time? 1-10. Thats right people, the redbirds have gone 1-10 when I was watching them in the stands. I can slightly remember going to see the birds back in the early 90's, nosebleed seats of course. I mostly remember watching Ozzie, Mabry, and McGee. Either two or three times I went with my baseball team and we were able to walk around the warning track track, yet again, Nosebleed seats. Those games were really fun because we got to see Big Mac, though I never saw him hit a home run in person.
Now, time for the good memories, which really aren't that great in many ways. I will start with the more recent games from 2008 that mean less in the long run.
I was at the game where Parisi made his first career start...I think that one ended at 12-2, Pirates winning, of course there was a rain delay. Best part of the game was Glaus hitting a home run, which I sarcastically said he would do before he stepped up to the plate.
Next, I was at the game where Lohse's sparkling sub 2 ERA got blasted out of the water by the Cubs...great seats by the way, 140's. At least I saw Yadi and Albert hit home runs.
I was at the Brewers game where CC carried a no-hitter into the 7th, and was right behind the rain tarp watching Albert look like a fool and throw his bat on strike 3. I called Rickie Weeks getting thrown out by Yadi, which did come to fruition.
Oh, this one is good. It was raining, Braden Looper was pitching, and Carlos Lee hit a home run off Izzy. Remember it? Glaus also left the game in the 3rd, eye problems, great seats, right behind home plate.
Now, time for a little older ones.
In 2007, I went to a game when Barry was in town for the last time, my avatar is of the Sign Guy who was sitting outside the park that day. It was a very memorable game, even though we lost. We were in the walkway area in dead CF, where they have the retired numbers. Schu hit a home run, Luddy hit an amazing double off the wall, and Albert got walked in the 9th. I think the final score was 7-5.
I was there on opening day 2007, 3 rows up in the bleachers. Tony looked at me, and So waved at my mom, great picture. We took an amazing picture of Springer, Eldred, and Hancock standing about 50 feet in front of us. When Kennedy hit the triple in the 1st inning, I remember a bleacher fan not far away shouting "Well he can hit Tony!!!"...if he only knew the future...
Now, for the one that meant the most: 4th to last game regular seasons game at Old Busch...we sat right behind the cards pen, and I got to see Carp warm up. If we beat the Astros that night, bye-bye, they were eliminated. Reggie hit two home runs, and he did a curtain call, I specifically remember Carpenter hitting a deep double, which was funny to watch. Edmonds struck out in the 9th with the go ahead run on.
Ok, so, you may be wondering, if this is all the losses, what was the win like? The Date: May 17, 2006. It will forever be known in the Book of Forgotten Baseball Players as "The last time the REAL Mark Mulder Pitched". Rolen drove Pujols in during the 6th, and that was the only run scored. Mulder went 8 innings, dominating the tough Mets lineup, but he walked a man in the 9th. So, Tony brought Izzy in, and what does he do? He loads the damn bases with 1 out. Thank goodness we won the game.
So, these are my experiences, do you have any bad ones as well?

Mulder did win another game after that
but he was not the same, and shortly later was the White Sox game.
For some reason, I don't enjoy watching Big Mac hit #62, but I fondly remember Ray Lankford blasting the ball out of the park in the same game. He had one sweet swing!!

Are you referring to the game when Anthony Reyes pitched a one hitter complete game loss?
That was a bitch. Also I think the game before Marquis allow 13 earned runs and we lost 20-6.

No
I am referring to the game where Mulder got the crap knocked out of him and was officially declared injured.

I was at that game
Had some nosebleeds at the Cell. I went with a White Sox fan. That was depressing.

If the Sox fan was hot
then it might not have been as bad…haha. But yes, I watched every moment of that debilitating series.

I got a couple quick ones
It was the Big Mac era, and I was younger. We watched the Mets put a absoult beat down on the cards, in 98. Thing I remeber most is my mom asking me if I wanted to leave because the cards where losing by 6, in the 8th inning. I looked at the batting order, and told my mom that I didn’t wanna go, because Big Mac could still come up with the bases loaded, and hit a grand slam. Then Ray Lankford could come up and 2 run home run, I told her. She laughed, and I cried when six outs later Ray Lankford struck out to end the game. Good times.
On a happier memory, I was at a game in 05 or 06, that Chris Carpenter pitched a complete game shut out over pittsburg. Another great moment was on photo day in 06, and my friend and I where takeing pics of the players. It rained that day, so we couldn’t go down on to the feild like the where supposed to, but the players walked the warning track and stoped to sign autographs. Two best moments where Jim Edmonds stopping and poseing because I said I wanted a pic for my mom (she’s a huge J Ed fan), and my friend trying to get a pic of Pujols. He shouted “Albert! Albert! Not you the other Albert!” and Pujols cracked up. He stopped and gave us both a thumbs up.
Another moment was when I went to a game in 1999. As we where leaving I watched one of the guys leave the stadium, and chased him acrosse the parking lot to get his autograph. I wasn’t sure who this Ankiel guy was, but he turned out to be decent the next year.
Also in 07 I got a autograph from Vlad Guerrero, by asking him in spanish. He wasn’t doing autographs as they where warming up, but one of my friends is a spanish major, and he asked him in spanish. Vlad thought it was funny and autographed our tickets. Went on to lose the game, but it was still fun.

I was in Pittsburgh...
when Jason Michaels burned the Cards after we had an 8-3 lead after 6 innings. Wellemeyer started the 7th and gave up 1 run and Springer came in to close the door in the 7th (9-4). Franklin came in to start the 8th and gave up 2 runs (10-6) and Villone finished the inning off without giving up any more runs. Izzy started the 9th and gave up 3 runs in 1/3 of an inning, then gave way to K-Mac who gave up another run and Pittsburgh tied it up at 10. Talk about a disappointment.
In the 10th, Glaus hit a solo homerun to put the Cards up 11-10 (such a redemption), but in the bottom of the 9th Michaels came up and hit a 2 run HR for the Pirates to win it (the biggest letdown ever).
Awful game to be at as a Cardinals fan.

My parents scalped tickets to go to the Don Denkinger game
in addition to paying way too much for the tickets, they had their almost fresh off of the lot car keyed over in the aftermath of that disaster.
but hey, luck can change. The next playoff game that anyone in my family managed to go to was the Albert Pujols miracle home run game against the Astros.

Not nearly as bad
I went to a Mets game and sat in the nosebleeds…It was when Piazza was with the Mets the cards won 5-4. It was back in the day ALbert was hitting cleanup and he hit a grandslam in the first inning.
Also went to one when Lankford and Kerry Robinson roamed the OF…it was a 9th inning comeback against Hofman and the Pads. Robinson hit a leadoff off triple in the 9th and Renteria followed up with a double. That was the night Lankford messed up his hammie(he was with padres) very long time ago but very memorable

Couple gems off the top of my head...
I’ve been to one playoff game in my life, in 2006 against the Padres. Unfortunately it was the one we lost… curse you, Chris Young! But then this year Albert almost decapitated him, so I kinda feel bad for thinking that way…
I’m also pretty sure I went to the game last year when Mulder tried starting… yuck.
Oh, and I was at opening day 2007, with Carpenter getting lit up, and we all know what happened after.
However, I also went to a game in late 2007 when Ankiel had a walk-off hit, it felt like a playoff race.
And I was lucky enough to attend Albert’s 2006 Easter Sunday homer-fest, probably the most fun I’ve ever had at a baseball game. So it balances out.
by mattybobo on Dec 9, 2008 11:36 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
that was possibly the best game I have ever been to
I have been on quite a run lately, the APu easter game, Ank’s 2HR game right after he was called up, and Luddy’s 2HR game(including walk-off) against the Rays this year. Of course I also had to sit through that disaster of a game by the Baron against The Astros. I really was hoping Pence’s GS would hit me in the head and erase all memories of that game.

I've had decent luck recently
In ’07 I was at the last home game against the Cubs. The one where Miguel Cairo hit the eventual game winning triple and we avoided getting swept.
In ’05 I was at the June 12th Yankees game we won 5-3, and Scott Seabol hit his first career home run. Also that year I went to a game against Atlanta on August 5th, and we won 11-3 with AP, Jed, and So all hitting homers.
On the other hand, I am 0-5 lifetime when I’ve seen us play the Royals…ugh.
Patiently awaiting the day Colby Rasmus does this: .275/.381/.551/.932, 29HR, in St. Louis...

Ouch, that's rough
I was at the final game of the 4 game Brewers series this season. Wellemeyer threw very well, and then Franklin gave up a bomb to Braun in the top of the 9th. Talk about a sucker punch.
In 2005 I was lucky enough to go to 2 out of the 3 games of an Astros/Cards series at the old stadium. The first one went 13 innings, I think, and Pujols hit a walk off bomb. That Sunday I went and watched Carpenter and Clemens pitch against each other. Carp threw a complete game in about 2 hours. It was about 105 degrees that day too, and I could see what Casey Stengal said about the old stadium “holding the heat well.”

probably my 3rd game or so
in the late 80s I think, the Cards were up by around 10 runs and the Astros came back and beat them… that’s why I hate the Astros more than the Cubs

This Astros-Cardinals Game Was A Nightmare
The Cardinals blew a 11-0 lead in the game with the Astros scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth at the Astrodome to win 15-12.

he admitted this in a game thread last season
I think we forbade him from every going to another game again. Lucky for him we don’t know what he looks like , so we can’t throw him out of the stadium if we ever see him.

I'm not cursed, but my underwear is
In ‘06 I got to go to several games. I had a new pair of boxers with baseball gloves on them, and I wore them to the first couple games I went to, just because. We lost one game 8-0 (Hamels shut us down), and we lost another when Izzy gave up a home run to Griffey in the ninth. In June my family took a mini-vacation to Chicago and got tickets to see the Cards play at U.S. Cellular. I foolishly packed the baseball boxers, though I had started to suspect them, and wound up being forced to wear them to the game….it was the Marquis beating I had the pleasure of witnessing. It was the single most miserable experience I’ve ever had at a ballpark. Someone spilled a drink on my brother’s jersey, a fight almost broke out in a restroom, and I acquired an undying hatred of the White Sox.
I swore off the boxers after that. Next game I go to, Carpenter two-hits the Dodgers. The one after that, Rolen gets a walk-off base hit. To this day, I’ll only wear the boxers on off days. I even get squeamish about them during the offseason; I’m afraid that if I wear them we’ll make a dumb trade or a bad signing or there’ll be a freak injury or something.

You should
burn those things so that no one can ever wear them.

and all this time...
… i thought that Jason Marquis was just bad at baseball, Cole Hamels, Chris Carpenter, and Junior Griffey were good at it, and Izzy was injured in ’06.

2 bad ones
I don’t live near St. Louis any more, only see them when they play in Denver, but I have two really bad ones in my past at Busch. I was at the Templeton game in 1981, where he repeatedly flipped off the fans and ended up getting suspended and traded. And my first Cardinal game at Busch was Gibson’s last game, with the Pete LaCock grand slam.
The first time I saw the Cardinals play live ever was in Cincinnati at Crosley Field. A doubleheader, probably 1967. All I remember is the Reds taking an 8-0 lead and the Cards scoring 10 runs in the 5th inning and winning 10-8.

you should be a little more proud of that one. That game is the reason we were able to watch the Wizard for so long!!!
