Moving Adam Kennedy and an OF/3B...

Star-divide

It is common knowledge that the Cardinals organization can not find a taker for Adam Kennedy so far this offseason, despite his request of a trade.  Thus, it has been decided, apparently, to commit to him as the starter at 2B in 2009.  But I personally feel that the apparent reconciliation between Kennedy and LaRussa is just a show to make Kennedy look halfway attractive and not completely disgruntled to any potential suitor.  After finding no takers at the Winter Meetings, Kennedy supposedly "changed his mind" and decided to show up to play next year.  But I just don't see it.

To move Kennedy by himself is near-impossible, but the Cards also have a depth of outfielders, third basemen, and RHP setup men from which they could deal.  In fact, I don't even see how they can enter 2009 without clearing up some of the OF/3B glut, and that is a good problem to have.  Realistically, the 2009 season can not start with the whole group of Ludwick, Ankiel, Rasmus, Schumaker, Mather, Barton, and Duncan as OFs on the roster.  How would the five of the above group that make the team all get enough ABs and playing time?  You could make a case that any of the above could be capable regulars at the big-league level to commence next year.

It is pointless, however to keep repeating the need to deal from the outfield strength that is discussed daily.  It seems to me that one could package Adam Kenndy with, say, Skip Schumaker/David Freese and Mitchell Boggs to bring back a quality 2B from one of the other 29 teams.

Now I put forth to you a few dark-horse trade possibilities to play 2B next year.

Inquire to the Mariners about Jose Lopez.  He is a free agent in two years, and the M's are rebuilding from a 101 loss season.  Lopez was a standout last year on an abysmal M's team, with 191 hits, 17 HRs, 89 RBIs, and 41 2Bs.  It would take a substantial offer to bring him here, and the M's certainly won't be interested in Ankiel, who is a FA after 2009.  But I don't know if the M's are convinced with Jeff Clement at C, and with Kenji Johjima imploding last year, they might be interested in Bryan Anderson.  Beltre is also a FA after next year, so they'll have a hole at 3B.  So perhaps;  Anderson/Freese/Boggs(give or take) for Lopez.

Or what about Christian Guzman from Washington?  Jim Bowden seems to be collecting mediocre outfielders these days, and we have OFs.  He also likes to get sub-mediocre to mediocre SPs and call them Aces.  Washington seems to be dysfunctional these days, so who knows what they might want.  The Nats might want to unload his contract, so who knows?  Anyway, its speculation.

I wonder if the Angels would want back Adam Kennedy with Rick Ankiel+pitcher for Howie Kendrick?  Having Ankiel for one year would obviate the need for the Halos to give a big contract that they don't really want to give to M.Ramirez or Dunn.  Ankiel would give them a bat to partially replace Teixeria and then they could make a run at Matt Holliday in 2009 for their long term solution.  And/or, the Angels might want Freese/Craig to play 3B for them next year so they could move Chone Figgins back to the outfield where his skillset makes more sense.  I would be fine with offering Kennedy, Ankiel, and Freese for Kendrick, whom could possibly fill our 2B revolving door for several years.

Also, as a sidebar, I knew that someone would give Willy Taveras a sweet 2 year deal.  Thank you Walt Jocketty.  I don't think it is possible to misGMmanage a team worse than you are currently doing.

I think that we should go after Mark Ellis

Kendrick and Lopez are nice players, but both have limited skill sets. Kendrick is a high average hitter but hasn’t shown the power or the plate discipline to warrant trading away that much to get him. Also his career .360 BABIP would mean that he would probably digress to a very average hitter over the next couple of years. Lopez has good power, but he has terrible plate discipline leading to a career OBP of .305, we already have a guy like that in Kahlil Greene. Also both of these players aren’t nearly as good defensively as Kennedy (although they are both good).

They guy who has most of the attributes that we should be looking for (cheap, good power, good OBP that isn’t driven by batting average and a standout defender) is Mark Ellis. He recently signed a 2/11 extension that vastly underpays him. Even with his flukishly bad year offensively (.233/.321/.373) he was still worth 13.2 million dollars mainly driven by his great defense. If he regresses back to his 07 season (.276/.336/.441) and keeps the same defense he would be worth about 15 million.

The Athletics are looking for a power bat to put in the middle of the lineup and they would probably like to get a third baseman with more upside than Hanahan. Ankiel+Freese would probably do the trick. Then we go and sign Ben Sheets and we have a great team.

Mark Ellis would be a better option than any listed above but.....

He was just signed to a $$ multiyear deal, and the As view him as a franchise cornerstone. Billy Beane still will trade anybody, but I don’t think it is really a possibility.

But check this out:

Cardinals receive: Mark Ellis, Justin Duchscherer

A’s receive: Rick Ankiel, Adam Kennedy, David Freeze, Fernando Salas.

or…

Cardinals receive: Howie Kendrick, Jered Wever

Angels receive: Rick Ankiel, Adam Kennedy, David Freese, Mitchell Boggs.

I would caution those who are eager to move Ankiel this offseason. It is not hard to imagine he could have a year this year like Hamilton had last year. The parallels between those two are eerie. I would rather move Schumacker and Duncan in lesser deals to clear up the glut.

Duncan has some pretty good potential also

before his injury in his first 600 at bats or so he was a force offensively. He is still somewhat young and unlike Ankiel, he won’t cost a lot after next year and he has no trade value because of the injuries.

You are right about Duncan having good potential....

but he is blocked by superior players Ludwick, Ankiel, Rasmus, Mather, and Schumaker, in that order. You can’t justify giving Duncan 500 ABs next year to the detriment of those guys ahead of him. I could only see Duncan playing every day here if Pujols(god forbid), has to miss extensive time and Duncan becomes 1B.

Still, Duncan will have to get extended playing time in order for him to show some value. My solution would be to move Schumaker and start next year with a Mather/Duncan platoon in Left Field. Either Rasmus or Ankiel would start in CF and the “loser” in that race would be moved in a deal for a 2B(Jose Lopez, Johnny Peralta, Brian Roberts,, Yunel Escobar, Howie Kendrick, P. Polanco, dare I mention Uggla, or perhaps Aaron Hill?)

Then, you would have a quite scary lineup:

2B: Lopez(my preference)
CF: Ankiel
1B: Pujols
RF: Ludwick
3B: Glaus
LF: Mather/Duncan
SS: Greene
C: Molina

That lineup would rival Philly. Jose Lopez isn’t really a leadoff man but when you have no holes in the lineup does it really matter?

I also don’t see why Jose Lopez is necessarily ruled out because he is similar to Khalil Greene. Its just more of a good thing in my opinion.

I was saying that it would be better to trade Ankiel than Duncan

Also that lineup wouldn’t be very good as you have guys with low OBP in front of Pujols. That lineup has enough depth that Luddy should bat second because he gets on base a lot.

any reason why?

I don’t know anything about the guy other than that his stats look pretty good. Is it an attitude problem or something?

they can't play baseball, they don't wear sweaters, they're not good dancers, they don't play drums

he fell off the face of the earth ever since he left the Twins

had his career year last year & will fall back off the face of the earth this season. in my opinion of course. i could be wrong, but i dont think he’ll ever be anything close to the player he was last season.

it's probably just me...

because it often is. But I get this low-level irritation every time the subject of Adam Kennedy comes up. And the feeling I get is like… why are so many soft-peddling? As if he were a drunk uncle at the Thanksgiving get-together that is making just enough trouble that you are concocting ways, or hints, to try to get him to go home.
Whereas the drunk uncle may very well be deserving of efforts to not hurt his feelings… is Adam Kennedy?
MY solution: call him a taxi. Ok, Adam Kennedy, you’re a taxi.
But seriously, folks… why concoct packages which include players we have who DO have value, just so we can get rid of Kennedy?
So, who plays second base, you ask? Anybody. {well, out of respect for gdm426, anybody but Guzman}. I bet if you told B. Ryan “you’re our guy” he’d do fine.
Ditto Hoffpauir; ditto Barden

by the Tewk on Dec 30, 2008 11:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

huh?

why didn’t Tony think of this “Hey Ryan, you have the second base job. Now go out and produce like a ML Second Baseman.” Is there any logic behind the fact that if you hand second to Ryan, Hoffpauir , or Barden would be league average second basemen, or is it just pure fantasy?

* sarcasm might be involved in this comment

I think he means that they are all major league ready players who have the ability to have good years

I really like B Ryan for some reason and I think that he could be productive on offense and defense if he was given the chance. Brian Barden has some pop, but I don’t know how well he is defensively. Hoffpauir isn’t so impressive, but he would a least get on base at a good clip. My dream is to get Mark Ellis but I could live with a platoon of Kennedy and Barden/Ryan/Hoffpauir

Just a suggestion.... not saying do it.... but.....

Perhaps bring in a guy like Jeff Kent or another borderline guy to compete with B. Ryan, Kennedy, and family for the 2B job.

by Czechguardsman on Dec 31, 2008 1:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Jeff Kent is so bad defensively

that even if he has a much better year offensively than kennedy the difference in there defensive value would make kennedy worth more. I wouldn’t mind signing Kent just to hit against lefties though. He could get 200 or so at bats and he could be lifted for defense.

by vivaelpujols on Dec 31, 2008 2:19 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, not specifically Jeff Kent...

But a borderline MIF who would slip comfortabily into a utility infielder role if he didn’t win the 2B job. A solid defender who can hit enough to not be an automatic out. Mabye someone like Joe Inglett? Just build depth in an area where there seems to be very little. And I personally feel that Brendan Ryan couldn’t handle the everyday job. I would much prefer an outside solution.

And to respond to the Tewk, if you can and must clear up the OF, why not use it as a dual-purpose means to send Kennedy away? I think we agree someone will need to move, so throw in Kennedy and bring back an INF. No one will take Kennedy solo.

I’m tired of seeing that 2B hole and I wish that they would use this opportunity this offseason to fill that hole with a viable presence so the lineup can finally be complete. I felt that we lost more games than we should last year because the bottom of the lineup were nearly automatic outs. On opening day, when Kennedy, the Pitcher, and Izturis were batting 7,8,and 9, I told my father, “My biggest concern for this year is that the bottom of the lineup won’t hit at all.”

Since the Greene trade and the Winter Meetings, Managment has seemed to have reverted back to an uber-defensive mentality. I’m sure a Loshe type bargian will emerge for a SP, so I’m not worried on that front. But they’re treating the 2B spot like a black hole instead of regarding it as an opportuntiy to dramatically improve the team by trading from strength.

by Czechguardsman on Dec 31, 2008 3:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

I’m still on the B. Ryan bandwagon even after last season… I think that once given a starting role, he will flourish. if he doesn’t play Barden. but again, Kennedy is not the worst option to start at 2B (if he is still with the team)

this line is dedicated to '09

Jose Lopez

can’t take a walk. Bill James and Marcel project his OBP next year to be .316 and .317, respectively. You’re only talking about a 50-60 point OPS difference between him and Kennedy. Lopez’s URZ/150 last year was also a -3.3. Kennedy’s was 22. If you were to trade these players straight up, then it would be an okay deal. But giving up 3 of our top prospects for him is way too much.

The Godfather himself has decided to grace us with his presence. This is his damn house. He sleeps 20 feet away.

by thegodfather on Dec 31, 2008 11:38 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

We just can't trade him to get rid of him.

He was defensively one of the best 2b in baseball for 08. He earned his spot back. He will be given spring training to keep it. Its not like we have Miles anymore. Kennedy will get to start and will be satisfied due to the abundance of innings available to him. How quickly the whole world seems to forget about SP.
