Introduction to Sabermetrics

I've been a reader of Viva El Birdos for quite some time and thouroughly enjoyed it.

However I don't think that I have enjoyed it as much as I could have due to my embarassingly poor knowledge of some of the numbers and statistics used in our discussions.

Over at Beyound the Boxscore Sky Kaulkman just started an ongoing introduction to sabermetrics.

While this is exactly the kind of thing that I think will help me become a better fan I wanted to find a site or guide that I could take at my own pace. In the past I've found wikipedia to be very helpful but a little overwhelming.

I was wondering if anyone had a link to a site that might help those like me who are not as knowledgable as they would like to be better understand the world of sabermetrics.

Thanks.

…“Collecting Saber Research Articles” is a good place to start. Beyond the Boxscore is very good too, but it is a bit dense and kind of bases itself on assumed knowledge of its readership. I think that BP’s Between the Numbers is a great book also written for a “lay” audience. I would start with those.

BP's book is good.

I’d follow along at Lookout Landing and USSMariner. They’re Mariners-specific, but take a very sabermetric approach and will go at a moderate pace. At BtB we’re happy to explain stuff you might not get, either in the comments or via email.

Not to suck up here or anything...

…But you and the other fellows over at BtB do a great job. Keep up the work!

Moneyball

That’s a very good introduction. It’s what first stirred up my interest in sabermetrics. It’s mainly focused on the Oakland A’s scouting process and such but gives a great introduction to sabermetrics.

Good book...

…The reader must remember that the book is NOT about drawing walks and hitting home runs…

…It’s about finding market inefficiencies, and at the time the book was written high OBP guys were a market inefficiency. A lot of people miss that and don’t get the most out of the book that they can.
