It's Weird...

....and its absurd, and its patently a stupid idea.

BUT:

What if the Cards traded Ludwick to the Giants for Johnathan Sanchez, and whatever else they cud get (maybe even work AK into the deal), and then signed Adam Dunn to take over in LF, mooving Ankiel to RF and Rasmus to CF?  Sign him for, say, 2-3 years @ 15 or 16 mil per year?  That gives us a young starter and a few years of a big bat behind Albert, with the moolah coming off the books after 2011.  I know, its not likely; I know, Dunn strikes out a ton and is the second coming of Pat Burrell in LF.  BUT, you can expect an-udder 40 HR/100 RBI/.900 OPS season from Dunn, and he's young enough to expect that over the course of a short contract.  And Sanchez would add a decent young cost-controlled arm to round out the rotation.  I know Ludwick is a cost-controlled OF, but by getting Sanchez we'd be swapping a high-cost FA starter for a a high-cost FA outfielder.  The terms of the Dunn contract would be critical in this, of course.

I dunno, just trying to think creatively.  Feel free to pile on.

I had a similar idea...

…but instead of Dunn, why not Manny for 2 years?

Manny

I agree. I know he is still costly, and risky in a way, but I don’t know how you don’t at least kick the tires on Manny at his current price. Even though we have a glut of outfielders and Manny would be the worse fielder of all of them except for possibly Duncan (though I thought Dunc did a decent job, he just looked bad doing it), getting Manny at value menu prices is a very rare opportunity.

That being said, I’m a big believer in Ludwick so I’d trade any and all of our other OFs first.

except manny at value prices may not be happy manny.

He’s still a top five hitter in the game, when he’s happy.

right

But I guess there would be a good chance he’d be happy here. Pujols would love him. And the fans would be tons better than Boston’s fans.

He's a great hitter when he's NOT happy...

In July, while he was supposedly killing the Red Sox with his “unhappiness” and “attitude” and whatever, he put up these numbers:

.347/.473/.587 (1.060 OPS)
4 HR
93 PA, 75 AB
22 GP

He’ll land somewhere and he’ll mash just fine. Maybe he’ll be lazy or whatever, but he’ll still hit and help the team in the most tangible way possible…playing baseball well.

What about that tangible thing called,

“defense”?

I agree that his attitude problems are exaggerated, but it’s not sane to pay a player that old and that bad at defense that much money. You’d be better off calling barry bonds.

His defense in left field won't kill us

He was still a top ten player last year considering his atrocious defense, and if we have Rasmus in center than it will probably balance out Manny’s D.

When I Look at the Remaining Free Agents

the only one who seems capable of “protecting” Albert is Manny. You want to talk about terms of a contract being critical! I just don’t think too many managers would lose sleep over the decision, “Do I pitch to Pujols, or (bring in my lefty specialist and strike out) Dunn?”.

I think you'd have to bat Dunn second

He takes, like, 120 walks per year. The guy is a get-on-first-so-they-don’t-walk-Albert machine.

meh.

The benefit of getting sanchez (cheapness) seems to be totally nullfied by having to go out and get Manny or Dunn. If we’re talking $15M over two or more seasons, we might as well go sign Lowe and keep what we’ve got. While Rasmus seems to be a good replacement for Ank, I don’t immediately see a replacement for Lud other than hoping that Dunc or Mather has a breakout year.

And as for getting a bat to “protect” Albert, we should really get the guy with the second best slugging percentage in the NL last year. Oh wait, we’ve already got him . . . .

You could have been like Joey on Friends

and went with moo point
Joey “…otherwise it is a moo point”
Rachel “a moo point?”
Joey “it is like a cow’s opinion, it doesn’t matter. It’s moo”

i think i have new reply for the MooCow from here on out

Interesting theory...

but Manny/Dunn is not the answer, let’s face it, Manny isn’t going to be happy anywhere he goes, simply because he knows he won’t get the contract he wants. If he’s cheap enough(not 25 million…), i might take a bite at it. Then trade Ankiel for Sanchez perhaps.

maybe if he learned how to play OF

he could get the contract he wants…

I have to agree with posters that do not want Manny or Dunn

Manny/Dunn do not play 2nd base and they do not pitch. We need a second baseman and a rotation…
