Next Season's Trade Deadline Goodies
I have been reading lately that some teams in need of offense if not overall rebuilding, have some interesting players that they can probably not re-sign. They'll either be too expensive or they will be at the height of their trade value. I thought it might be interesting for all to list their favorite targets, just in case the cards are contending and need help. Also, you statheads can go crazy analyzing who would be the best fit. I thought about limiting this to pitching, since that would be the most obvious need. Then I thought about what a boost Felipe Lopez was last year when we needed pitching. So I want to leave it open. Perhaps that proverbial "impact bat" will be available. Here are some candidates:
1. Brandon Webb. I have an idea that the diamondbacks will be willing to trade for offense. I believe he will have multiple years, (two?) and will be way too expensive for a financially troubled team to extend. Not sure what the team will have to trade at that time, but with our glut of outfielders and corner infielders we should be able to make a match. On a personal note, I live at Lake Tahoe and this year we will have the diamondback's AAA team in the Reno Aces. I should have a much better idea of what is in their pipeline after taking in some games. I'm pretty excited that I can see some quality baseball without having to fight traffic in S.F. or L.A. Tickets will be way cheaper also.
2. Roy Oswalt. I know it is within the division, but the Astros are also hurting financially and Roy will carry a huge price tag. As much as I covet this guy, I can't see the Asholes trading him to us.
3. Peavy. Is anyone sick of talking about this guy yet? If he weren't such a fine pitcher on such an affordable contract, we would have burnt out on this subject quite sometime ago. But I can't help drooling when I think about Carp, Waino, Peavy and Lohse. Hello October.
4. Manny being Manny. Does anyone think his new team might tire of him by July? Wouldn't it be great to get a Dodger deal on him?
Well, there's a few ideas. I'm sure you will come up with even better ones if you are interested. Happy New Year!

Peavy, an affordable contract?
Not quite. He’s slated to make more than Albert in the next few years. That’s never affordable. Maybe the Yankees will be dealing CC at the deadline, he’s pretty cheap. Have you ever considered how cheap and easy it would be to lnd Alex Rodriguez?

We're talking about who is going to be available next July
when we don’t even know where some of these players are going to land THIS season yet? Are we that hard up for topics of conversation?

cheap is a relevant term
when you’re talking about cy young award winners. peavy will make around sixteen. how much will cc make per year? you do the math. and it doesn’t make much difference where players will land this year when you are talking in hypotheticals. and yes, we ARE that hard up while waiting on the redbirds to do something…anything. and if you don’t care for the post, don’t comment. otherwise you just cheapen yourself.

I'd like to land Brandon Webb
but of course, who knows who will win the AL West, I think the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, hell maybe even the Giants, will be competitive
this line is dedicated to '09

This is a bit early for such discussions
But, for what it’s worth, Beane might be looking to swing Holliday if the A’s aren’t reasonably close to the top of the AL West.

Webb's...
Probably not available till after 2010, as he is signed for 6.5 mil for 2009 and has an option for less than $10 mil for 2010 (option originally $8.5mil, but increases by .5mil for every top five CY finish from 06-09).
Oswalt is very interesting as he is fairly expensive (as much as $61mil for 09-12) but worth the contract. Should the Astros (finally) figure out that they can’t win with their current roster and decide to rebuild I’d love to have Roy…I doubt the Stros would trade him intradivision, and I’m not sure the Cards can afford his contract.
I want no part of Manny and his antics. Our OF is already one of the best in the league and that doesn’t include Colby, Mather, Barton and others as starters.
I also agree that Peavy is NOT cheap. Affordable or worth his contract, perhaps, but not CHEAP!! In 2009 he’s cheap ($8mil) but for 2010-12 he’s guarunteed $52mil (included $4mil buyout) and will probably require that his 2013 option be picked up adding another $18mil. Do the math and that’s five years at $15.6mil/year. Considering the significant injury risk that is tied to him that’s anything but cheap.

All that being said...
I do like this excercise, but don’t have the time to dig into who might be available mid-season. I think the first thing you do is cross any 1B, OF, 3B or RH relievers off the list, as we are stocked at these positions, and shouldn’t be considering veteran replacements. That leaves Loogies, SP, and MIF’s (the area needing the most help) as trade targets.

Mark Grudzielanek
Depending on how Adam Kennedy plays and what kind of contract Grudzielanek signs and with what team, he may be a decent target. I doubt that he’ll get more than a 2 year deal and if he’s healthy in July and Adam Kennedy still sucks this might be a good guy to go after.

Personally,
I would like to sign him as a FA and replace Miles with him and platoon both he and AK throughout the year. But we’ll probably just stick with Miles…
