This could have been us...
Eight mil, with incentives to push it to 13m.
They pay Renteria almost twice what he's worth, then they get RJ for half his worth. What the hell are they doing being smart?
I can't understand why this wasn't us offering this contract. It's short, below market, has huge upside, is for a starter. This is just extremely disappointing. RJ was stellar last year, and he played in a bandbox with a terrible defense. He moves to a big park with a terrible defense. I can't stop thinking this could have been our big park with our good defense.

And have spring training in AZ
So that’s two strikes right there.

for $9.5-10 M guaranteed
St. Louis would’ve sounded pretty good, too. It’s outrageous that we made no play for him whatsoever. $8 M! Sheesh!

Plus incentives
For what it’s worth. I don’t know the specifics.
RJ has his money. Surely at his age he’s come to value location more. I don’t think we ever had a chance.

I don't think we had a chance either...
but I don’t see any reason not to poke our noses in. Maybe we did…but all signs point to no.

Could not have been us...
under no circumstances. The guy is a prima donna. Not that I blame him. When he was rehabbing here in Tucson he would fly in – from Phoenix – just before the game, then fly back to Phoenix right after the game. Of course he has his own plane…
Still, Tucson is about 110 miles from Phoenix. The speed limit on the 10 is 80. I can cover it an hour and 15 minutes. I must take longer to get to the airport, fire up the jet, land, then drive home.
Anyway, the point: Not a Saint Louis guy.

but neither was Will Clark
a “St Louis guy.” And if not a prima donna, certainly way up there on the ‘hotdog’ list. My point is… it can sometimes happen anyway.
I clearly understand and agree that Johnson did not sign with the Cardinals because of HIS end, not ours; I just wanted it noted that if he had come to St.L he would have been loved and welcomed.

Is anybody else astounded by how good the Giants offseason has been

If by that you mean
Astounded by the size of Renteria’s contract, then yes, yes I am.

Overpaying Renteria was bad
but still, they’ve made great strides in a division where so far every other team has taken a step back. They’ve got the pitching. Their offense isn’t going to be great but if they get an impact bat it will be good enough for them to compete in the west.

overpaying Renteria wasn't that bad
Read this article by Keith Law from ESPN. He explains how signing Renteria makes them better in the short term without sacrificing anything in the long term. 18 mil might be a little too much, but it is only for two years and he has a pretty good upside of returning back to his old form.

Here's the thing about shortstops right now
there are simply not enough high quality shortstops around. I’m thinking about half of the ML teams would like a better one than they have, but they simply aren’t available. I’d rather pay the price and get Renteria than settle for Eckstein, Crosby, Izturis, or wait for the Angels to finally set loose some of their blocked infield prospects, or the Cubs lettting Ronnie Cedeno go. Maybe they could have signed Cabrera, but I’d take Renteria over him, even for more money.
She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

Except that Izturis was better than Renteria last year.
Space.
It's a problem we face.
So we never go anywhere.
We just stay in one place.

With the offense the giants had last year.
They honestly could not afford to sign Izturis IMO. They need someone with offensive potential.

The Dodgers have to be the favorites...
they haven’t lost anything other than Mad Dog. If they miss out on Manny (unlikely IMO) then they take a step back. Still yet as the division winner last year they barely finished above .500. I think now is a wise time for the Giants to try to go for it. Their rotation is outstanding other than Zito.

They lost Lowe
Who was incredibly valuable to them last year.
