Rooting for the Yankees

"And the rich get richer..."

is one way you might think of it. On the other hand, the Red Sox are outbid, and with the emergence of Tampa Bay, they could suddenly be the third best team in that division. While it's true that Yankees fans are historically more annoying than any others, it's also true that Red Sox fans have become more than insufferable in the last few years.

From wikipedia:

home run by David Ortiz and a five out win by Keith Foulke helped the Red Sox win game 1. They won game 2 thanks to six innings from starter Curt Schilling. The Red Sox won the first two games despite committing four errors in each of them. Seven innings from Pedro Martínez where he did not allow a run helped the Red Sox win game 3. A home run by Johnny Damon in the first inning won game four for the Red Sox to secure series. The Cardinals never led in any of the four games in the series and trailed at some point of every inning in all four games. Manny Ramírezwas named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the series.

I have hated the Red Sox passionately ever since, and absolutely every single event that goes against them, I cherish. The Teixera signing I cherish too, and I don't much care if the Yankees are evil or whatever. They play in a far away place in another league. In addition, all of the credit the Red Sox have been getting over the years, along with all the jackass fandom they have been sporting since the day after they won has gotten too trite to bear. The only thing the Yankees can usually do that has any effect on me is beating the Red Sox, and I hope that happens far, far more often now.

Have to say...

I couldn’t agree with you more. I realize the Yankees have won (but really bought) way more championships than the Sox, but damn, I HATE the Red Sox. I go to school in Washington state and every time I see someone wearing a stupid (and usually new) Red Sox hat, which happens a lot since the Mariners are worthless, I want to stop and ask, “Oh, cool Red Sox hat. Are you from Boston?” No doubt the hat wearer will inevitably say they aren’t from Boston but Seattle and that they just like the team. I would reply, “Well then, why don’t you root for your own damn team and quit jumping on everyone else’s gravy train?” My roommate freshman year bought a fresh Red Sox hat with the 2004 World Series logo on the side of it right after their “amazing” come from behind series against the Yankees. Then I saw him with another hat after their win in 2007 and he’s from Washington. Some people just don’t understand what it means to be a true fan…

Really?

I live in Seattle, and I find that there’s a pretty large distaste for the Red Sox. M’s fans really hate the Sox and Yankees right up there with the Angels from what I’ve seen. Maybe you’re in a different part of WA?

there is a pretty large distaste for the Red Sox almost everywhere

at least I think that would be a pretty good assumption. It is just that you will always have bandwagon jumpers no matter where you go. I am still amazed 20+ years later at all the “longtime” Mets fans that pooped up during the ’86 season back home, and I grew up within 100 miles of St. Louis. Those kind of people just irritate the hell out of me. They really are not fans.

And yes, I noticed it said pooped when I hit preview. Sometimes a typo is just a better fit if you don’t change it.

by aet15 on Dec 27, 2008 12:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe

It’s a generational thing. People who were rooting for the M’s before their 116 win season are probably still M’s fans, even if they don’t care to admit it. But college kids probably don’t care. I went to a Sox-M’s game this year at Safeco and was truly appauled at how many more Sox fans I saw compared with M’s fans. It just seems like everyone started wearing new Bosox shit the day they were crowned the best.

Well, I doubt it's generational.

Because I’m also that age, but that is interesting. I think that’s also just a result of (like you said) a ton of fairweather Boston fans being all over the country. But I think you will find that a lot of M’s fans hate the Red Sox more than almost any team out there. Who knows . . . maybe it’s just my group of friends.

On with the (good) youth movement!

every non-Yankee fan would smile

if this Yankee team won 110 games, swept their way to the World Series and then were swept by Torre’s Dodgers

by Hinkster on Dec 26, 2008 11:18 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Is it just coincidence...

or did the Yanks not make the postseason every year of Torre’s tenure and then missed it the first year after he left? It’s not like his mid-to-late 90’s teams had tons and tons of free agent talent on them.

I still don’t think that Girardi is the right fit for them as an organization, but I guess we’ll see. If he doesn’t win 95 games next season he’ll be ridden out of town on a rail though I’d imagine.

I spent a little time in Boston earlier this year.

I was wearing a Cards hat and got a lot of shit for the 2004 series. Mind you this was in January, not long after their 07 win, but every one wanted to talk about the damn 04 series of course.
This was also during the Patriots undefeated run. Everywhere I turned it was “best team eva!! brady’s the best quartaback eva!! ra ra ra!!” I left just after they won the AFC championship… wish I could’ve been there for the super bowl…
And now they have the Celtics championship too. C’mon, man, six championships in a little over six years? I don’t want to see another Boston championship for like twenty years.

Cubs fans > Boston fans > Boston bandwagon fans

You guys have to admit

That Boston sports teams have been some of the best in their respective sports.

Baseball: The Sox have won 2 out of the last 5 World Series, and gotten to the ALCS two of the other three years.
Football: Three Super Bowl’s (the most) since the millennium. Not to mention their place in NFL history with a 16-0 season. They also have a QB and WR who set TD records just last year.
Hockey: Team with the most points in their conference after perennially being a fringe-playoff team.
Basketball: Before yesterday were off to the best start in the history of the NBA a year after winning the Championship. Also the most winning sports franchise in any sport in terms of titles won/years league in existence.

Still don't like 'em

I don’t know why but I just do.. Even though I’ll admit that they are a great sports city, and I kind of like the Celtics, I just want them to lose!!

and the fans were mostly nice… except that guy in the Cubs jersey. He smelled like sad and vodka.

I still hate the Yankees more than the Red Sox

Despite what happened in ’04. The Steinbrenner family fails to amaze me, and probably never WILL amaze me.

By the way, I should probably introduce myself. I’m a regular at one of the newest blogs on SBNation, St. Louis Game Time (dedicated to the St. Louis Blues. Yes, I know. They suck.)

I’m a lifelong Cardinals fan – since as long as I can remember, which is why I decided to join this little hangout. I’ll pop by here from time to time to see what you all are up to. And what I’ve read thus far is some good work, so keep it up!

This is

why I like the Yankees more than the Red Sox. The Yankees can spend (and overpay) as much as they want and not win but the Red Sox seem to pay (or overpay, see: Matsuzaka) and win. The Steinbrenners just do all the spending for show because Cashman is just that, a cash man.

Well, who watches TV at 1 AM anyway

It had been a couple years since I had seen Fallon in anything. I thought and hoped he had fallen off the face of the world after TAXI bombed. Still, he’s like a bad canker sore that keeps recurring every so often. I hate Fallon. He thinks he’s gods gift to the USA and he’s a pathetic 37 year old little-boy wannabe.

by Czechguardsman on Dec 31, 2008 4:39 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I hate them both

…but I could never hate the Sox enough to make me root for the Yankees. We’re talking about a team that pays more in penalties for moronic spending than the Cardinals have raised their payroll in the last three years. If you hate them both now, wait until Pujols hits free agency! As Cardinal fans, we should all be screaming for a salary cap at the top of our lungs!

As a sports city though, when you factor in the Patriots and Celtics, I do hate Boston more than NY (though I’m still not real fond of the Mets either). And if you need any more reasons to hate Boston, there’s always Ben Afleck.

The Red Sox are one of my favorite teams

I always want what I consider to be well-run organizations to do well.

by astrostl on Dec 27, 2008 11:20 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

The fans ruin it for me.

If well run organizations like TB or Oakland do well, great. Their SBN sites speak to the coolness of their fans. Boston fans are like the Cubs fans of the east coast. Now imagine how they would multiply and how annoying they would be if the Cubs won two world series.

I'm in accord with Hazel's evolution

and with her ‘reasoning.’ I myself can’t recall any distaste for the Sawx until 2004… maybe partly because they were usually the best hope for “at least it’s not the Yankees.”
I had the bad experience of paying over $800- for two seats in the left field bleachers at game 4 of the ’04 WS… our bad luck being that the section was dominated by Red Sox “fans.” I have long since forgiven the Cardinals for their slump at the wrong time WS of ’04 (the year as a whole was a banner year) and even the listless play the night I was there to see the final nail go in.
BUT…I will never forget the utter obnoxiousness of the pro-Boston people in my bleacher section. We were out-numered in that section and the team did nothing to make them stfu. Dreadful

I find both fanbases incredibly annoying

but the Red Sox more so. I don’t begrudge the Yankees for signing every big dollar FA they can find, at least they want to win. If anything, I could see the logic in someone rooting for the Yankees for that reason.
