Duncan interview from small local daily

Duncan talks about Kinney, Izzy, and Perez in the Branson Daily News.

Star-divide

Duncan talks about Kinney, Izzy, and Perez, and how losing a steady closer hurt the bullpen as a whole, in the Branson Daily News. Just thought people may be interested.

He also talks about how losing a steady closer helped hurt the bullpen's performance:

“After we lose (Isringhausen), we were scrambling trying to fill that role with other guys out of the bullpen,” said Duncan, whose off-season home is in Kimberling City. “What you end up doing then is being weak in more than one spot. The closer is a critical role. Any club that loses its closer is going to suffer from it.”

best quote of the article:

“If there is a dark horse to the Cardinals’ 2009 bullpen, it is Kinney.”

Second best:

"Chris should be all set to go for spring training be ready to compete for a job."

lets get a closer

dunc and tony r unsure of perez thats obvious. i think we need a closer for a year or 2 to let perez or motte develop. some possible trade targets

jj putz 5.5 mil in 09, 8 mil team option for 10.

bj ryan 10 mil in 09, 10 mil in 10. hes also lefthanded.

kevin gregg 2 arb years for 09 and 10.

to some degree or another all these guys r available.

point?

i read other teams press releases about every day. i also watch baseball and play fantasy baseball.

putz plays for the mariners. a team that loses 100 games doesnt need a good closer. thats pretty obvious.

when ryan was hurt accardo came in and did an excelletn job in 07. also brandon league has really good stuff. hes probably the least available of the 3.

gregg is avaialble. the marlins have stated so. when a team says hes avaialble u know he is. matt lindstrom will be their closer. if u havent seen him pitch dont question that. ive seen him in person once and on tv 4 times. he is a closer. he has the stuff and the makeup.

I have read...

that all of these guys are available on other sites, as well. A link would be nice, but I think the majority of readers/posters on this site are already aware that these guys are being shopped.

Trading for an established closer is madness

the other team always wants too much for them

florida doesn't like gregg that much

he was removed from the closer position last year and he might be available for just one prospect, say freese, in a trade

Thanks for the post. Interesting thought fodder. . .

Wonder if Dunc is really in the dark as to the team’s plans for the pen. .. ?

kevin greg

perfect, and i could imagine a huge deal with the marlins that would include uggla and gregg

by vivaelpujols on Nov 8, 2008 2:09 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

how about this

ludwick, anderson, motte, freese, and barton for uggla and gregg

the marlins traded jacobs to the royals so they could use freese or craig.

barton gets put in the deal to even the value out.

maybe we would need to give up a little more but i dont know. whats your proposal.?

I wouldn't give that up

That’s an MLB All-Star, 2 MLB level players, and 2 players who will likely be MLB starters in the future. Not to mention the fact that Motte has the pontential to be a closer himself. All 5 of those players are cost controlled. Gregg made $2.5M last year and Uggla is due for a pay raise. Now, if they wanted Ankiel, Freese, Anderson, and a mid-level pitching prospect, I’d be more willing to consider it. I think that you are undervaluing Ludwick. Last year he would have been the best hitter on most MLB teams.

too much

i would say either take out barton, kennedy and have them add ameziga to the deal. he would be perfect as a utility guy and is much younger and better defensively than lopez who appears is gonna get that job. they would actually like kennedy because he is great defensively and they would be losing a second baseman. with there infeild stacked they wouldn’t mind a defensive player to help ramirez and who evers at first base

I like this quote:

"Chris should be all set to go for spring training be ready to compete for a job."

It makes me happy. I don’t want to get too excited, but imagine if he hits 20+ homers again. He has some defesive “Excellece” as well but I’m not going to think about that.

Perez comments positive too
Likewise, Duncan’s impressions of the 23-year-old Perez (3-3, 3.46 ERA, seven saves) were good.

"He’s a very talented kid," Duncan said. "I like him a lot. He’s willing to work and understands he doesn’t have it all figured out, yet. There are still things he needs to be able to do to move himself up, as far as the significance of the role he will play in the bullpen. I think right now you can say he can pitch in the big leagues. What role he will play will be determined by how he develops."

if that still translates into YP throwing too much junk & throwing his FB low in the zone

then i still hate how YP is being handled.

Young Pitcher

He needs to learn to throw strike one and I don’t care if it’s high or low, he just needs to get a head…..He was really bad at that last year toward the end of the season. Guys don’t pitch high strikes early in the count, they are more apt to take a high pitch moving away in the zone.

K 1 is the most important K in the count

so i agree. what i don’t agree with is the way DD went about trying to change YP’s approach. we went over this over & over again late in the year so i don’t want to rehash old arguments, but it was pretty evident to me DD was trying to change everything about how YP pitched. he threw way more junk & stopped trying to strike guys out & he tried to get more ground balls. which explains to me why he had such a hard time getting outs in september.

and i just don’t understand. why take away the guys strength & the reason why he had been a success up to this point in his career? no one ever asked DD or Tony that question. i really want some reporter to ask that question.

to back this up

after starting out 1-0, batters hit .291/.452/.600 (1.052 OPS, 73 PA’s) against him. After starting out 0-1, batters hit .191/.237/.303 (.540 OPS, 98 PA’s).

6 batters swung and hit the first pitch; 4 made outs, including one GIDP, one reached on an error and one hit a home run.

Does the data show type/location of first pitch

I’d like to look at the information but don’t know the source to find it. Thanks.

no

I got the data from the B-R pitcher splits page. the information you seek might be available elsewhere, but I don’t know where.

he needs to fix his slider

his fastball is great and he was able to have a pretty good with just throwing that pitch. if he developes a sharp biting slider and maybe a change, he could be a top closer for a long time
